VICE: This Wind Chime Is Tearing a Brooklyn Neighborhood Apart

I love how quickly that tree basically became NeoGaf.

Brooklyn just shot themselves in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about New York culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in Los Angeles where you can become successful by being an asshole. If you screw someone over in Brooklyn, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is that New Yorkers, after hearing about this, are not going to want to purchase windchimes for their trees, nor will they purchase any windchimes at all. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Brooklyn has alienated an entire market with this move.

Brooklyn, publicly apologize and take down this wind chime or you can kiss your business goodbye.

]Not sure why you think NYC has noise blaring outside Manhattan and even then in the major areas at any given second. More to the point, just because there is noise doesn't mean people are cool to deal with more of it.
...because I live here. I literally hear sirens every 15 minutes.
Things like this get annoying. It is always there, you start focusing on it and anticipating the sounds leading to trouble getting to sleep, leading to more frustration and even more stress about it. I can totally understand the neighbor about this.
I understand why it CAN be frustrating. However, living here my entire life has conditioned me to be ignore random noises.

That said, this all could have been avoided if the person actually knocked on the door instead of posting a passive aggressive note.
Because of the increased likelihood of occasional random noise, I should be allowed to install a device which promulgates frequent, repeated noise? You live next to the freeway, so surely you'll have no problem with me installing a foghorn that sounds every 30 minutes. Noise is noise!

I mean, maybe the solution to living in a noisy place is not to intentionally add more of it, especially if you know that it is making your neighbors uncomfortable. If part of living in a society is compromising on some things, I would think the person making the noise should be more responsible for compromise than the person who doesn't want to hear it in the middle of the night. That's just good manners.
Are you seriously comparing the volume of a wind chime to a foghorn? My point was that a wind chime is absolutely nothing compared to the other sounds of the city.
And again, good manners is talking it out with someone instead of posting passive aggressive notes.

If you can't fall alseep because of windchimes in your neighborhood you probably have some kind of sleeping disorder or physical problem. There is no way that's the loudest thing happening in a city neighborhood overnight.

Living in a city, you need to compromise. Please don't be the douche that moves in and tries to tell other people how to change.

It reminds me of the gentrifiers that move into a dominican apartment building and then asks them turn the music down. The same music that's been blasting all day for the last 30 years. It's rude, ignorant, and many other words.

I do agree that possibly dampening the wind chime though would be a good middle ground.

That no one has asked my downstairs neighbor before me to turn down his music that vibrates my entire floor (partially because he retaliated in the past to people he didn't like by urinating over their stuff) doesn't make him any less of an asshole, he just never got called on it before. Tough luck. It's kind of hilarious that stuff like common courtesy is now considered verboten gentrification.

If I'm a terrible person by expecting people not to blast tunes 4am on weekdays when some people actually have to get up and work, I'm a terrible person.

The person should probably have made an attempt to talk to the person before the passive-aggressive note, but the person coming right back with it just makes everyone look like a bunch of dumbass juveniles.

I dont get how 20-somethings can afford brooklyn.

That's honestly the weird part of the story to me.

You have roommates. I know people who are basically poverty-level and live in Greenpoint and Williamsburg. It's a terrible idea, but if you want to spend all your money on rent and brunch you can do it.

Did a person really write a hashtag "same" on there?

Anyway, I personally would have taken it down. The note was reasonable and out of courtesy, I would take it down. On the other side, I also wouldn't have complained if someone put up a windchime. I just adjust for small things like that. Also, don't hang things on public trees.

Fuck wind chimes fuck those assholes for putting on the side walk. You dont own that space. I would rip that shit down and throwbit in the garbage

Well, the neighbors made a reasonable but terrible mistake in that they thought it was a wind chime, when it's clear to the person who hung it it's basically her mom, and they're asking her to silence her dead mother. There's no reasonable response they could have made to get the woman to take it down even if they had played their cards better.

The wind chimes are her dead mom and she flat-out refuses to remove them. Talking to her in person likely wouldn't have made a difference, any more than me talking to my neighbors made any difference.

What a self centered entitled person. Its not private property and they received a complaint about the noise. Unless her mom was known to piss off the neighbors its not a great tribute.

My neighbor has multiple wind chimes. I like them. If they kept me awake at night I would just use earplugs though, much like I did for almost half a year when there was major construction on my street. Some people should just live on a farm in the middle nowhere. They aren't cut out for life around other people.

Wind chime person made it bigger than it had to be. Also, why can't she hang it inside her place. She would still be honoring her mom, and reducing the noise for everyone else. Seems like the kind of neighbor that wants to cause trouble.

Oh, and you know how this is going to end. Someone's going to take the wind chime and hurl into the trash.

They should really put a sign up warning about signs warning about signs.

Also, fuck wind chimes.

Something doesn't need to be loud to keep you awake, just consistent. A leaky tap isn't awake but I bet hearing the constant, regular drip of a tap down the hall would keep most people awake, or at least bother them enough to get up and stop it.

This guy gets it.

The ever-growing note on that tree is like my own personal kryptonite. Shit like that just makes me want to burn the whole world down.

Talk to each other like damn adults, you fucking idiots.

What I don't understand is why the windchime owner wanted to speak to the complainer in person as it seems like she wasn't planning on taking it down anyways. She just wanted the complainer to feel bad in person. "Oh, this windchime? The one dedicated to my dead mother that's dead? You want this tribute taken down? Fuhgedaboutit."

Everybody needs good neighbours. With a little understanding you can find the perfect blend. Neighbours should be there for one another, that's when good neighbours become good friends.

Calling the cops for mother fucking wind chimes seems immensely petty.

I don't give a fuck if it's wind chimes, a car, a boat, a shoe, a horse...etc. If it's making enough noise to keep you awake let the cops come and decide if it's a pain.

I can't think of a wind chime loud enough to keep me awake. But if it is call the cops and file a noise complaint. They will then decide how to proceed.

Also it could be argued keeping the chime up when it's obviously bother folks is petty. Just take the shit down.

My uncle put one of those up, almost the same model, on my Grandmother's porch and it was a legitimate source of simmering tension in our family. It doesn't sound like a nice tinkly sound, it's like someone banging pipes together. It made it difficult to sit on the porch in peace. No one would directly come out and say anything about it because it put my Grandma in a tight spot, it being a gift from my uncle that other family members didn't like. So we put up with it, but I was glad when it eventually blew down and broke one day.

Man just throw that shit in the trash if it bothers you, unless she owns that tree or the block then it's just some garbage she left out on the street. And who lives in NYC and is kept awake by a wind chime? Grow up.

Brooklyn becoming gentrified has its irritating as hell moments. I moved back to my hood Kensington last year, and it's now ONE OF THE HOODS to move to in Brooklyn...you guys should see the Facebook page for the hood. We lived in harmony for 20 years before social media, but now...every damn thing is an issue!

My neighbor has a wind chime on their porch. It is really annoying. Luckily my apartment is on the inside part of a courtyard of the building, so we rarely get much wind here. I only hear it if it is storming out and there is a lot of wind. Not often enough to complain.

If I saw that somebody had screwed something into a public tree, I would take that shit down and call the city.

Urban trees have enormous benefits and are expensive to initially plant (and getting one hardy enough to take root may take a few attempts).

Also, wind chimes fucking suck. I can deal with a an ambulance, the roar of an air conditioner, traffic, and even voices next door. But the dinging and ringing of bells and chimes are at a superobnoxious frequency. Plus it is loaded with the thought of a neighbour thinking "this sounds nice to me and everyone else must hear it."

Wind chimes are awesome.

They were something that I missed hearing once I left the city.

You honestly you think the response would have been different?

Hey are those your wind chimes?

Yes they are.

Sorry to bother you but they have been keeping me up at night, could you take them down?

Oh no they are in memory of my mother who recently passed.

I'm sorry to hear that but they have been keeping me awake at night and I have to work in the morning.

Well this is NYC you should expect some noise.

Music loud enough to create a constructive eviction is, indeed, rude, ignorant, and many other words.

Isn't the one who put up the wind chime the one who's forcing people to change?

Wait...it's rude, ignorant AND many other words to ask someone to turn down blasting music and then you agree to dampening the chimes?

That's the equivalent of asking that neighbor to turn down the radio. Gaf be on one..I swear.

That no one has asked my downstairs neighbor before me to turn down his music that vibrates my entire floor (partially because he retaliated in the past to people he didn't like by urinating over their stuff) doesn't make him any less of an asshole, he just never got called on it before. Why would you move in somewhere without knowing what kind of neighborhood it is? There are places where it's loud and everyone is okay with it. I've heard a million stories about gentrifiers that move in and overnight try to change the culture of a neighborhood.

I'm not saying the wind chimes is an example, but that's what my original point was. That's why I also said that finding a middle ground could be a solution. The woman wasn't wrong to put it up, but there's no reason why both parties couldn't have come to a compromise.
