Yes, I probably could have fished around and found out how to do this myself, but since this place is a repository of useless (and sometimes useful :p) knowledge, I figured it'd be quicker if I asked. :)

How would I go about creating short video clips (wmv, avi, or mpg format) from DVD's? Not particular "scenes" as they are digitally defined on the DVD's themselves, but just, say, some random part of a film. What software is generally used for this purpose; more importantly, is there any freeware that would do the job? :D

Thanks in advance. :)

Well, if it helps. I edit film - it will be my major in college. I use Adobe Premiere Pro to do all of my editing, which is an amazing program..but um..kinda expensive. I do know though that..cough it is easy to find on Limewire and whatnot..cough.

As for taking scenes from different movies and mixing them, that would be kind of complicated in that ripping from DVD's usually produces weird formats. Again, and this is WRONG (lol), you can download pirated versions of these movies and import the entire movie into the Adobe editor in order to cut out the scenes you want.

Yeah..

Well, I'm not looking to do anything illegal, nor do I want to create my own mixes. :) I'd just like to take certain DVDs that I legally own and create small clips (< 30 seconds) of certain scenes. I figured there'd be freeware for that sort of thing-- perhaps the MS Movie Maker that geogaddi mentioned would do the trick? It doesn't have to be professional-grade stuff... :)

I guess I'll do a search on MS Movie Maker, then, unless anyone has any other info. Thanks, guys. :)

MS Movie Maker is free, though, at times the program is a bit slow when handling several clips and then having transition effects and things of that sort.

Yes, it can get the job done but its a bit slow and can get frustrating. Also, the final encoding takes a long while to render fully.

Get Premiere, it's awesome.

I use it, too.

Is that the full name of the program-- "Premier"? I'm not familiar with it. EDIT: whoops, seems you're talking about the same "premiere pro" that MasterAJ22 was talking about. :)

Also, it seems that my system fails to meet the minimum ram requirements for MS Movie Maker. I have one of those tiny processor/mobo boxes, and it only fits 128 meg of ram, 32 of which is used for video since the box lacks a dedicated video card. So it seems I'm s.o.l. until I get a new PC this summer. :p This box was just to get me by until I got a proper PC again, since I went through 2 PC's in under two years (the others fried somehow) and was fed up with wasting all my money on them, so I decided to get one on the cheap. :D

Loki you can't edit Space Jam into a good movie no matter how hard you try.

Loki is editing in Magic Johnson to replace one of the Monster ballers.

George Lucas aint got shit on Loki!

For editing clips you can use VirtualDub. TMPGEnc is another choice if you don't mind transcoding to MPEG. Both are free, though the latter has some features that VD doesn't, like WMV editing. There is a pay version of TMPGEnc. You will need to make sure you've converted the VOBs on your DVDs to AVI at least, however.

I don't have any clips to edit (which is why I created this topic :p), but thanks anyway. :)
