Viewtiful Joe: Double Trouble

Mejilan

Running off of Custom Firmware
is another fucking awesome recent release. Damn, this one was totally overshadowed by Mario Kart and Tony Hawk (in my eyes), but I finally put it in today. Truly, 1st gen DS software was an unfair benchmark for considering this system's graphical capabilities, IMHO.

This is gonna be a great weekend. :D

Who else is playing this sick game?

I am completely overwhelmed with amazing portable software right now!

Trying to finish Castlevania DS, right near the end (just collecting some final souls).
I've got Gunstar Super Heroes GBA but have barely touched it.
Playing the phenominal MK DS, both the single player and certainly WIFI make this game very hard to put down.

Then there's VJ Double Trouble. I am blown away by this game. Just blown away. It is so much fun! I'm probably having more fun with Double Trouble then I ever have with any previous VJ title!

I just shudder thinking about the fact that I'll likely be picking up both Animal Crossing DS AND Mario & Luigi DS. I am fucked. TOO MANY AAA GAMES!!

I was iffy about Animal Crossing DS, but after having played MK DS WIFI, I'm convinced that my previous love affair with the GC version of Animal Crossing is nothing when compared to the possibilities of a WIFI Animal Crossing. I got rid of my GC copy a long time ago, so I figure it's time to add Animal Crossing back to my collection, only this time - for the DS!!!

I picked Sonic Rush instead of VJDT... can't say I regret it but I want to try VJ too.

I'm going to have to pass on ths game in the short term. It was well at the top of my list but I seriously cannot keep up with the amount of quality DS titles coming out.

This is insane.

For my tastes, DS is the system of the year.

Yoshi Touch and Go
Meteos
Kirby Canvas Curse
Advance Wars Dual Strike
Jump Super Stars
Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow
Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney
Trauma Center Under the Knife
Viewtiful Joe Double Trouble
Metroid Prime Pinball
Sonic Rush
Mario Kart
Mario and Luigi 2
Animal Crossing
King Kong
Snowboard Kids

I picked it up last night and played for a bit, and it's awesome. I don't like the touch screen additions (they shoulda just ditched that shit and kept in speed), and I dont' care much for the zoom on the top screen, though I just put a few minutes into it. It does look really good, though, even in the cutscenes (the character models look surprisingly great).

You lose

*angry*

Yoshi Touch and Go was one of the few DS games I felt I could actually sell. I have a stack of 15 other excellent games though, and wouldn't part with any of them.

I'll never get rid of Yoshi Touch & Go. I consider it a true classic and I'll always want to come back to it from time to time. I have a record I have to beat and I need my Yoshi music fix every now and then.

VJ:DS is coming to the mail this week along with Mario Kart and Tony Hawk. Should be fun times. People have said the game is more or less like the console versions; and that Viewtiful Joe fans will like it. I'm a fan, so I should be in for a treat.

I haven't played Viewtiful Joe before... would you guys suggest it, or should I play the GC version first?

I hate to be the voice of dissent, but you must play a console version first. This isn't in the same league, though I admit the visual fidelity and some of the level design is very impressive for a handheld. Personally, I found it no where near the fun of the original. There are a crapload of good DS games out right now, but this is second tier for the price. Plus, the console version is super cheap.

Apologies C-Warrior, I did a search for "Viewtiful Joe" and found no official thread.

I think VJ and VJ2 on the GCN (or PS2, I guess), are certainly better games. But I didn't expect the DS game to be as close an approximation to the console experience as it would be, visually or from a gameplay standpoint, nor did I expect it to be as fun as it wound up being.

I love VJ, but sometimes it's nice to be able to play it during my daily commutes as well! I USUALLY dedicate my limited console time to RPGs, and tend to marginalize arcadey games on consoles.

But regardless of all that, VJDS is an amazing game. MKDS, THAS, and VJDS are all reinventing what I thought was possible on the DS. G-d damn the models and animations (cutscenes and gameplay) in VJDS are freakin' fantastic. It's missing lots of the extra splooge effects from the console games, but most of the visual flair and all its unique style is perfectly intact.

I just want the devs to either make kick ass touch applications, or just drop the fucking touch screen.

Castlevania, Touch screen was nonsense.
VJ, AWESOME game, touch screen was a waste. split... whatever. SLOWS the game down!
Hawk... stupid to use it for the freakout... and I hear it gets worse uses later.

Not a complete waste, Touch and go was good, AW was OK, Warioware was good...

Nintendo was smart enough to not f up Mario Kart!!! Maybe we will start to see more great games not heald back by shitty additions based on the touch screen. USE it when needed. (as in Mario Kart should have had post race chat... DUH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just release a new Game Boy with the abilities to play DS games using "the useful screen" and drop the 'sometimes useful, mostly gimmicky' Dual Screen shit. Yeh, I better put on my flame suit now, but IMO it's a pretty good idea.
