Vita "hacked," (PSP) homebrew on the way (not piracy)

Are you going to be playing the game on a Vita with custom firmware? If you are, just download the tools to extract an ISO from the Eboot and put it on your Vita.

I tried this but it didn't work. It extracted all the game files to a folder, which I made into an ISO and converted to a UMD, but it still showed up as a black box that wouldn't run when I transferred it to Vita.

I think it means that this is something that could be patched in the emulator itself, meaning that Sony dont have to fix it in every game like they have to do with VHBL (this is tied to a specific game). The article mentions this:

"Second, it is really essential to understand here that firmware 1.82 (or whatever comes next) will most likely patch Total_Noob’s Kernel exploit. If we had waited for firmware 1.82 to reveal the MBA exploit, it would have been “less” useful, as people wouldn’t have been able to use Total_Noob’s CEF, but rather something like VHBL, which provides less features. In other words, usermode exploits are less valuable than a Kernel exploit, so it made sense to “waste” a second usermode exploit on 1.81 rather than wait, especially since there are lots of other game exploits lying around."

I understand this as if they waited with revealing Mad Alpha Blocker to firmware 1.82, most likely only VHBL would work on it.

So I've managed to follow all the steps and it's working, I installed the FTP and got that connected. when I open my FTP via Filezilla it allowed me to create an ISO folder within the psp folder
So I have
GAME
ISO
LICENSE
SAVEDATA
SYSTEM

I've ftp'd my iso files that are all in caps and under 8 characters to my ISO folder but they do not show up in the CFE menu.. I've tried both FF7CC and MGSPW. If you add the .iso at the end of those files it becomes 9 characters which gets added after I transfer them to the iso folder, could that be the problem? maybe shorten the name to just MGS?

Is the .iso also in caps?

yeah I just renamed them to .ISO and they still are not showing up? may I be missing something? I transferred the save file for Mad blocker and the FTP, got the flash and into the CFE and installed the FTP. Which seems like I should be missing something.. maybe like installing some kind of homebrew on there or was the save file itself the homebrew that allows me to run the iso's without anything further?

The MadBlocker save is everything you need.

Ok, so I have Mega Man Powered Up on a Japanese PSN account, will this help me get that to work on the Vita without the tedious switching accounts and memory cards process?

No need to wait for that, you can play downloaded Vita games right now. Just go to the PS Store, every Vita game is available for purchase and download there.

It's different for people outside the US. In Australia we don't have a release date for Persona 4 Golden, or Ragnarok Odyssey, so the only way to get those is by importing a physical copy.

Or if you play a lot of imports, no way to easy buy a J-only game digitally on a US vita, right?

As a big Miku fan I feel like I looked into this XP

That's why the Vita is region free at retail. DD or DLC is something else but you can play that Miku game on your US Vita if you buy a hard copy.

Wait couple of months and we will get to play Vita games as well.

honestly I do not care about that, I have already bought every game I want to play, including PSN games. I just want to play stuff I can't already play! Ranging from PSP and PS1 games not on the PSN, to (hopefully) emulators for nes/snes/gb/gbc/gba/genesis... dreamcast? who knows what is possible! Although most of the good dreamcast games are ported to PC, so that's not a biggie.

I hope they don't release too many of their exploit finds so fast... wait until the next major firmware that offers more than just an exploit patch.

Maybe the ISOs aren't transferring properly?

Try transferring one via opencma.

They were placed in the wrong spot, if using an iso/cso you create the ISO folder in the first folder possible. Your FTP address/ISO folder. I thought the ISO folder was to be created inside the PSP folder, I was wrong. Works great now though, thanks!

Sad to see this de javu happening to a decent hardware like this.

To be fair, as it stands right now this hack is nothing more than what already exists for the PSP - and only affects the "PSP" mode of the Vita. The Vita-specific games and functionality are still very much secure.

and how long do you think it's going to stay that way?

Considering the Vita's security architecture is likely (hopefully?) vastly different and more complex than that of the PSP, I'd hope a long time. Only time will tell for sure, though - just one breakthrough and its all over. Then again, the PS3 held fast even in spite of its initial hacking for many years, and I have to imagine the Vita is even more secure than that. So.

It's fair game as long as there remain dumb restrictions and glaring mistakes like BBS.

No it's not fair game. BBS and CC is SE fault not Sonys. You knew before you bought the Vita it wouldn't play UMD's and you also knew neither of those games were up on PSN.

And I guarantee that the there's a high percentage of people using pirated ISO's to play with this hack.

Does anyone actually give a shit if someone rips their own UMDs? I can't imagine there is any legitimate logic that makes pirating an ISO any different than ripping your own. If you've paid for the game, you've paid for it. I can't imagine how many times I've pirated SMB over the years. I've bought it multiple times too, but the idea of having to rip the cart to play it every time there some new device that plays it is pretty inconveniencing.

I'm pretty sure Xseed, Atlus, NIS, Sega, Namco and others who have PSP titles on sale for PSN and who still continue to release new content for PSP (FF 3 just released) give a shit.

The guy you quote specifically only referenced games not on PSN, so I don't see your point.

So, I got the TN 0.2 to load no problem with MBA, however, I can't install the .zip at all with the FTP thing on it. Exactly how do i do this?

I made a .zip that is called FTP.zip all caps. Put it in the saved folder for US. Copied that saved folder over and turned it on. Nothing shows up but MBA and the official PSP games I already had loaded up from the PSN store...what gives?

The .ZIP extension is in caps too right?

Perhaps I missed it but how do I go about accessing new content from PSN without updating from 1.8? I tried transferring from ps3 but its still asking me to update before I can even transfer.

I have a question about the PSP, I just got into CFW and I'm on a 3000 with 6.60. Do I have to run recovery every single time I turn off and turn on the PSP? Seems like I do, kind of a pain in the neck.

Also whats a good SNES emulator? I have the SNES Euphoria R5, and it's kind of garbage. 3 of the 5 games I tried don't play, and the ones that do, the sound is terrible and tinny. Is there a higher version?

I think you're looking for this thread.

And yes, you have to run the fast recovery every time you turn off the PSP. Unless you just don't use it often it shouldn't be an issue though, you don't have to do it after waking it up from sleep mode.

So,

I have SNES9XTYL and GPSP, what are some other good emulators?

I am not interested in emulating any hardware that predates the Super Nintendo/Sega Genesis generation. I got started gaming during the SNES/Genesis period and have no interest in playing games that predate the 90s.

Thank you in advance.

Feels good, man.

Where did you download a Vita compatible version of DGEN from?

I've been dying to play some genesis on the Vita but every version of DGen I've tried downloaded failed to run on the Vita.

Thank you in advance.
