This makes more sense now IMO. Playing on handheld mode you will put the cord in the port will give you mic/chat/game audio and all - however the phone will be used to invite friends to parties and games because the OS is rushed and half-baked and these interfaces aren't in it yet.


However, it still sucks for console players. Because if you have the switch in the dock - how will you get audio? Can you use the headphone jack while its docked and will it give you audio? If so, you're gonna need a long ass cord.

I have a feeling that the switch will wirelessly output the game's audio to the phone. That's the only way this would work.

Kind of like The Wii U Tablet's streaming but with a third party's (phone manufacturer) device.

I was positive the phone app would be an alternative but reading that Reggie quote, what in the world. I guess they couldn't get a headphone jack in the joycon for docked play.

They literally took Sakurai's sardonic "solution" to no Brawl voice chat from 9 years ago and ran with it for their flagship system.

What the hell is going on with this thing?

Alright, so work w/ me here and see if this sounds reasonable, because now I sort of get the situation overall now cause I was confused about everything.

Nintendo has this horrible way of not doing the right job when it comes to translating which is beyond annoying. So, if this is some sort of theory/assumption, let's think the Switch was originally supposed to be out in Fall 2017 w/ all the current march titles as launch titles. Then comes Microsoft announcing Scorpio, so they were like oh shit let's move it earlier to not lose sales and such (which would make some sort of sense). This would then be a good reasoning as to why the launch is meh and why we haven't seen the UI.

If this was to be true, then that's why we've barely seen the UI, which is why they're not seeing many screenshots/preview of it or why they didn't show it off last night. The intention could of potentially been to have party chat but with the move from Fall back to March, they decided to find some temporary solution which is the app.
Because it seems like the intention was to have a party chat hense why it's coming the Fall? Maybe I'm over thinking it?

You can have an audio jack for headphone use, but it's not going to do the microphone any good if it doesn't support voice chat through the console. They really need to clear this up.

Putting the headphone jack in one of the Joy Cons instead of the tablet would more or less fix that conundrum. Might make some motion controlled games awkward though.

Everything is confusing man, I agree. They really need to give us this information up front it makes no sense like why does everything have to be so complicated?
 
Wish people would stop banging on about discord etc. Its completely unacceptable that a games system does not have party chat option in 2017.

I don't think those people are also saying that it is acceptable to not have a party chat option in 2017. They are pointing out the free app that is easy to use.
 
So am I correct in assuming that Nintendo went this phone route because they don't have a viable Bluetooth solution for docked/undocked play?

I was paraphrasing, but basically yes. Here's his exact quote: "Instead of having some sort of bulky gamer headset, you’ll be able to do it right off your smartphone, put in your earbuds that you use for your standard mobile device. We think that’s a pretty sweet solution."
 
They're doing this to protect kids. They're crazy paranoid about that. Remember them killing Swap Note (my favorite thing on 3DS)?

I might not have explained it clearly. I'm more thinking of something like if you and I were playing Splatoon split screen, but we were online voice chatting, then the person on the left side of the screen would only hear the part of the audio feed that would make sense for what is happening to the left side of the screen and right would only hear the right side appropriate stuff. I.e. The left player wouldn't hear shots being fired at the right side player.

Wait. That interview makes it sound like you can somehow actually play using your phone's internet connectivity while on the go. I mean, it's Nintendo and they didn't specifically say it, so no of course not (also that would be a lag fest).

But tbh his comments don't make any sense at all. How does having to use a phone to enable all online features make things EASIER? Nintendo's got me really worried.
 
Seems like nintendo just doesn't want to become modern. If I were in charge I would throw out all the japanese influence and bring in western engineers.

Yeah it's pretty baffling that your platform can't even do voice chat natively in 2017 let alone party chat. People shouldn't have to use things like Discord or Skype.

It's not the engineers who are a problem, it's the businesspeople telling the engineers what to do. The sane choices are all possible, Nintendo just isn't making them.

That is something that having voice chat integrated into the hardware and OS achieves and without the need for a separate device that just makes the process more cumbersome and almost surely has drawbacks not found in the former solution.

And again, let's not forget Nintendo's solution is an app that is behind a paywall.

This seems too crazy even for Nintendo. I have to believe there is something we all are missing. I'm unfortunately pretty cynical when it concerns Nintendo, but this is some next level messy design.

They need to address this. There are plenty of people that don't even have cell phones as wild as it might seem. Or if they do they don't have data since it might be a pay as you go phone. They might not even have wifi but just a wired setup in their homes. There are going to be people that simply won't have access to this app setup. So what's the alternative?

They need to explain this as well. Will this app be only iOS based locking out Android users? What about Windows Phone users? Will it work on tablets (iPads/Android/Kindle Fires)? iPods?

"Plug in your headset to your system"

Wording implies it connects to the the actual Switch. Even if it's just a 3.5mm, there'd be no reason to plug it into the Switch if you can't use the mic on the Switch.

The fuck is going on.
