Wait a second... Who's buying all that DLC?

I think literally the only DLC for anything I've ever bought was Undead Nightmare for RDR

Usually if it's worth it there's some kind of Ultimate Collection or whatever that I just rebuy later on down the road.

GAF is a tiny bubble. We don't represent anything remotely resembling the mainstream.

That being said, I bet a lot of people who post on GAF and spout hate for all things DLC buy it anyway. In fact, I'd bet a random GAFer buys more DLC than the 'mainstream' gamer does on average.

How many here bought the Witcher 3 season pass? How many here already threw down money on Batman + Season Pass? Probably more than we'd like to tell ourselves.

I buy some DLC, but not much.

Games I've gotten DLC for:

Red Dead Redemption, Dark Souls, Dark Souls 2, Mario Kart 8, Mortal Kombat 9 (not all), Dragon Age (I got the Morrigan one and then later got the Ultimate Edition of the game), Mass Effect trilogy (got these games and some of the "must have" DLC pretty cheap in a sale), Uncharted 2 & 3 (map packs), Metal Gear Online (map packs), Grand Theft Auto 4 (during a sale), and LittleBigPlanet (like 2 costumes).

This is all over a period of 7 years.

Only DLCs I ever bought:
- Mark of the Ninja: I regret buying the DLC even though I absolutely love the game;
- RDR Undead Nightmare: not bad
(does in-game transactions count?)- Team Fortress 2: some keys from the in-game store, but I think the game deserved my munny.

It's not my case, but it's very likely that some people who complain about DLC practices are actually still buying them.

Not all DLC is created equal.

I buy sizeable RPG expansions, I couldn't care less about the day one exclusive character hat, nor do I think it makes me a hypocrit if I don't care for weapon/map packs etc.

I buy some dlc. Red dead redemption, gta iv, fallout 3/NV, Skyrim. Bought some when I played call of duty black ops. Got a couple for star wars the force unleashed. With the exception of call of duty I can't say that I ever bought any dlc that wasn't worth it. I never bought a season pass though. I doubt have a problem with dlc, but you just can't mindlessly buy all of it.

Maybe talk to friends OP?
I have friends who just buy DLC like all the time and, you know what, good on them because they enjoy it.
Also everyone around me buys FIFA and Call of Duty every year.

If the Dlcs are as good as Minerva Den for Bioshock 2 and Left behind for The last of us or as content packed as presumably Witcher 3 DLCs i have no complaints about them, the problem is when they are selling a pack of Mp maps for 10$ for your typical Mp shooter like Cod and armies of dudebros keep buying them year after year, so companies keep selling them because they are profitable i suppose.

Why is that a problem? The "dudebros" enjoy playing those maps and find $10 of value in them. Good for them, I'm glad it's available for them to enjoy and i am glad it further funds one of my favorite hobbies.

Depends on the game. I bought Season Passes for Forza Horizon 2 and Trials: Fusion. I will for Arkham JK=Knight and Rory McIlroy Golf.

I passed on it for Titanfall, Destiny, and other games. If I'm comfortable enough wit the developer and publisher, and I know it is a game I plan on spending a year with, I will grab it. Many online shooters, I just wait to see if it hold my attention long enough to matter.

The difference is, I understand that game proves have gone up, and I don't have a huge problem with it, because I like the games I spend a lot of time with. Prices have been really flat, and gamer rage doesn't let publishers raise prices traditionally. Instead, everyone gets a portion of the game for cheap, and people that are most interested the game get charged more for the rest. It actually seems really, really fair.

The other option is to raise prices, less than DLC, but on every game you buy. I'll take the option to play on the cheap, even if the $60 price tag makes some people feel like it is a full priced game.

I see DLC exactly like expansion packs that existed 25 years ago. Just like I bought and was happy of the Populous or Lemmings expansion packs on my Amiga, I buy DLC when it looks like it's worth the price.

On GAF, I never get into anti-DLC rant threads, and generally avoid talking to people who make broad generalisations and look like they take this stuff way too seriously, because, what would be the point?

I doubt I'm alone in this case, so even on GAF, I'm not sure the consensus is anti-DLC by principle.

I just bought my first Season Pass ever last night, for Driveclub.

It includes an absurd amount of content for the price, and considering I got the game for $20, I was willing to drop the dough.

I think that most people who buy DLC simply avoid the "DLC is horrible and anti-consumer" threads, videos, etc which leads to a bit of an echo chamber effect.

I'd be curious to know how much additional revenue DLC has created. It has to be something substantial because everyone does it

I have nothing against season passes and DLC, at least in theory. I think Oblivion kind of represented the good and bad in the potential of DLC with Horse Armor and Shivering Isles. We hope we get more Shivering Isles quality DLC for our games, but more often than not, its just Horse Armor.

Sure I buy DLC every now and then. Almost exclusively single player story content, and I've been lucky enough that the games I've wanted to buy DLC for (such as Dishonored and Bioshock Infinite) have had what I consider the good kind of DLC, i.e. content that was actually developed after the game was finished.

I havet bought a few bits Of DLC. RAGE because I really loved the gunplay and such. BioShock 2 because I loved the world and wanted more. That's it in the last several years. Renegade, Fear 2, and Borderlands also but on sale.

EDIT: always amazes me how GAF jumps so conclusions; Bold text incoming.

I am aware that GAF does not equal the entire gaming community of the world.
That's why I mentioned that even outside of GAF people have this sentiment.
Also, if most of GAF has this feeling its safe to assume that a majority on other gaming boards have the same feeling, and therefor a lot of people have the same feeling about DLC

It's sad you even had to post this since your question was plainly obvious. The gaf trend of forcing thread backfires is such an ongoing shitstain that consistently ruins discussions.

Anyway as much as people say they hate the dlc/passes/etc a surprising amount of people still buy them. There was a thread a month ago about good & bad season passes and it was shocking how many people just on gaf buy not just one or two, but regularly or near every game. What was more shocking was when the same people said only one game's dlc was actually worth it, but they'll continue buying them. As someone who has only purchased tlou, telltale, borderlands, skyrim & fallout dlc/passes I just couldn't fathom it.

For me it just depends on the game. For instance I'll probably buy all the DLC for fallout 4 when that comes out. But when it comes to nongafers I know that tons of your typical call of duty fanboys will buy the season pass without a second thought.

Even on GAF I think the vast majority of hardline anti-DLC complaining comes from a vocal minority. Most people are fine with DLC assuming its done properly.

I buy DLC. People that write it off and ignore it completely strike me as very misguided or ignorant. Nearly every argument I hear against DLC in general is formed from poor reasoning and incorrect assumptions about game development.

Why is that a problem? The "dudebros" enjoy playing those maps and find $10 of value in them. Good for them, I'm glad it's available for them to enjoy and i am glad it further funds one of my favorite hobbies.

Exactly. Some bitter people on here complaining about things they created in the first place, and just spout nonsense because they don't agree with it.

Don't confuse someone who is complaining about things with someone who isn't buying them. It's often the loudest complaints come from people who feel compelled to buy everything for some reason.

GAF is a self masturbatory hug box. The normals are out there buying what looks good while we cry into our Amiboos.

While GAF has a very vocal anti-DLC contingent, it also has a ton of people who buy DLC on a regular basis. If it didn't, we'd never have threads about DLC, which we do. The OPs initial premise -- that GAF doesn't buy DLC -- is just wrong, so the answer as to who is buying DLC is: lots of people, both here and elsewhere, depending on whether they find value in it.

On a personal level, I've bought considerable DLC for games like Oblivion or Fallout, where I liked the games and wanted more and thought the DLC was worth the value. I've bought car packs for racing games, although that's more rare, since there are usually plenty of cars for me. I bought Premium for Battlefield 4, because new maps represent good value for an online game I played that much. For me, the deciding factor is usually if it contains more gameplay or story. I don't buy unlocks for stuff already in the game, although I don't have a problem with those who do, and I don't generally buy cosmetic DLC, like new outfits.

I buy plenty of dlc. It's not some blanket awful thing, there's good stuff worth the price in games I really enjoy.

I'm not opposed to the practice either, it's a business reality of current game development.

I've bought loads of DLC, especially for games like Rock Band and Rocksmith,
and the greatest thing about it is that it's completely fucking optional.

Ehh I buy DLC but case by case. Although I usually throw down for Premium for Battlefield I skipped it for Hardline. Bought the season pass for Sunset Overdrive but haven't even downloaded any of the DLC yet for it, that I am okay with ill get to it and I was happy to support that game as much as I could.

It's way more than you think. Just look at DoTA 2's tournament being "crowd funded". So far the prize pool is TEN MILLION and that's only 25% of the total sales of a $10 item.

Then there's the ridiculous amount of money people buy on gun skins/knife skins that literally NOBODY except you sees with the small exception of those that stream or the split second that the other players see you.

Or you can look at skins/hats for Dota and TF2. Seriously, those kids on Steam throw money at Valve like there's no tomorrow.

What people say they will do and what they actually do are rarely the same thing.

One of the best pieces of advice I heard while working on MMOs was "Do not listen to your forums."

People lie. People exaggerate. People bitch about anything and everything. They tell you one thing and do another. They demand one thing but want another.

All that listening to feedback generally accomplishes is potentially and only partially satisfying a vocal minority while simultaneously obfuscating and ignoring actual problems of the majority users.

There is no such thing as a consensus. Ever. Not even close. And less than 10% of your users will ever post to a forum (generally for troubleshooting, not feedback), let alone be the loudest voices in your forum community.

Instead, live on metrics. Data does not lie. The counter argument to this has always been that data can be misinterpreted or misconstrued to say whatever you want. And that's a danger, yes. But that's also a danger with forum feedback, on top of the fact that the forum feedback is 99% bullshit that no one really gives a crap about. So you are misinterpreting false data. There is never a time when metrics isn't the better option.

And metrics say that the overwhelming majority users love to buy DLC or at least don't care that it exists. And it makes significantly more revenue than not having it. There is no logical reason for any game company to not have some form of DLC nowadays.
Great post. Almost all of the developers from larger studios I've visited/have friends at have said pretty much the same.

I bought the Elite Soldier Pack for XCOM: Enemy Unknown. Totally worth it to get the Guile haircut from the original UFO: Enemy Unknown.

Otherwise I have not bought any standalone DLC or season pass.

I am quite comfortable with buying DLC, and have frequently done so. I make my own judgement call as to whether it merits the asking price.

Quite a lot I'll only pick up when it's on sale; that has an asking price more in tune with what I feel is fair. I've bought some without that requirement, though; MK8, Hyrule Warriors

The only time I ever purchased DLC was when there was that Killzone Shadow Fall glitch on the PS Store whereby if you bought an 84p piece of costume DLC you got the whole game.

Otherwise I have never purchased it and once I complete a game I either sell it or never play it again. I don't agree with the DLC culture that proliferated throughout the 7th-gen console market and refuse to buy it to this day––not to mention there's barely anything compelling offered anyway.

I don't think the perception that casual players are the ones buying DLC is correct. I think people like GAFers, who are serious fans, are purchasing the lion's share of DLC.

I happened to buy GOTY editions or other Game+DLC bundles on sales.

Other than that, I just don't. Stuff like day1 DLCs and Season pass are scams.

GAF is a tiny bubble. We don't represent anything remotely resembling the mainstream.

There are so many conversations on GAF where the frame of reference is implicitly specific and particular to our presumed interests. Games on mobile or casual portals are basically ignored and/or are invisible; conversations about VR focus entirely around its application to "immersive" games unless expressly stated otherwise; when people say "PC gaming is smaller than console gaming," they're really talking about a particular, relatively narrow slice of gaming where that's true, even if they don't realize it.

I'm surprised nobody posted the CoD boycott Steam group that was all playing CoD on release day.

For all the complaining about DLC here, a lot of people still buy it...even people here :p

While some people - very vocal people who insist on posting in every damn thread no matter how tangentially related to the DLC it is - might not see value in various forms of DLC, many others do. They just do so more quietly on the whole.

Other than buying DLC super cheap on a Steam Sale, I think the last real DLC I bought was the Season Pass for Modern Warfare 3.

I don't know if you count this, but I buy a lot of cosmetic items in Dota.

I buy and support good DLC. I'm all for having more of my favorite games without waiting years for a sequel. I won't buy nickel or dime stuff, day one DLC (with rare exceptions) etc. But I'm all for expansions months down the road, more characters, stages, maps etc. down the road in games I love.

I buy DLC that looks like I'll enjoy it. If it doesn't look like I'll enjoy it (or if the price seems offputting) I won't buy it.

Basically I tend to range from interest to apathy.
