Wallace & Gromit to hit XBLA

Seems that Telltale's upcoming Wallace & Gromit series will be their first XBLA release. Kind of interesting that it's going there instead of WiiWare (like Strong Bad).

Port of Sam & Max? Something new?

Here is the full press release:

Telltale announces Xbox Live(R) Arcade debut with episodic Wallace & Gromit series
Wallace & Gromit's Grand Adventures brings all-new stories, characters, and contraptions to Xbox LIVE(R) Arcade and PC this spring

SAN RAFAEL, CA, February 4, 2009 - Interactive entertainment pioneer Telltale, Inc. today announced that their highly-anticipated episodic series, Wallace & Gromit's Grand Adventures, will lead the company's expansion to Xbox LIVE Arcade this spring. Wallace & Gromit's Grand Adventures will also be available for PC.

Wallace & Gromit's Grand Adventures will deliver all of the humor and charm of the duo's popular animated films, with a monthly series of brand new interactive stories in Telltale's unique episodic format. Alternating between the roles of quirky inventor Wallace and his faithful canine companion Gromit, players embark on their own style of entrepreneurial business ventures, tinker with creative contraptions, and interact with an ever-expanding cast of fun and endearing characters in each episode.

"Our episodic series focus on story, character, humor, and cinematic presentation -- very much like a television or film production. This all makes for a great living room experience through the gaming console," says Telltale CEO Dan Connors. "We're looking forward to expanding our catalog onto Xbox LIVE Arcade."

The series' launch follows the record-setting Christmas Day premiere of Aardman's new Wallace & Gromit short film, "A Matter of Loaf and Death," the most watched TV program in the United Kingdom on Christmas Day with 14.3 million viewers. The film also recently won an Annie Award for Best Animated Short and secured a BAFTA Award nomination in the same category.

Showcasing visuals modeled closely after franchise originator Aardman Animations' clay creations, Wallace & Gromit's Grand Adventures is Telltale's most cinematic series to date, immersing fans in the stories and interactions with the colorful personalities of West Wallaby Street. The game also features a new direct control scheme for gamepads, designed specifically for Xbox.

Telltale has become the industry leader in regularly delivered episodic games, with the release of two award-winning Sam & Max series and most recently, Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People. The Strong Bad series became the first monthly episodic set for a connected console, with the finale episode releasing in December on WiiWare and PC. Telltale plans to announce additional titles for Xbox Live Arcade in the coming months. I couldn't get any of my Wii owning friends interested in any of Telltale's games. Hopefully Telltale finds a better audience on the 360.

I'm really looking forward to the Wallace & Grommit game. And when is S&M2 coming to retail?

According to Telltale, Strong Bad sold pretty good on WiiWare. I guess they just can't get Wallace & Gromit down to 40MB per episode.

Awesome news. I'm a big fan of theirs since I picked up Sam & Max for wii. I think it's a good idea to port their games to as many consoles and places as possible because it's a very niche genre these days so you never know where you can find fans.

Yeah, it's probably a file size issue. More likely than not, the eventual disc compilation will get ported to Wii.

Really? I work at a Gamestop in my small hometown when I return from college, and the DS and Wii have made adventure game fans of so many young girls and middle-aged women there.

I'd rather it just come on a disk for the 360. Let's face it this is the sheer number of episodes in this package is just gonna rob the 360 of some potentially more exciting games.

That's pretty cool - I hope that they are working on getting it to look clay-like like it should...

Clay enough for you?

I just hope the controls will be decent, Strong Bad worked really great with the Wiimote. Hopefully they have found a way to make the controls good with the 360 controller.

That doesn't make any sense.

If anything, it'll help in the fight against those garbage release weeks where would have just gotten Crosswords or Mahjong or whatever (or nothing).

If a game needed co-op, this is it. Dibs on Gromit!

Co-op adventure game? Well it's unique to the genre I'll give you that;) I love that both W&G and adventure games are making a comeback. Well deserved.

While it's a little upsetting that it won't be coming to Wii (yet), apparently Sam & Max Season 2 has been informally confirmed for Wii retail release later this year and one of the mods (?) at the Telltale forums is hinting at an eventual retail release of a Wallace & Gromit "Season".

Fingers crossed.

Are you Flyhawk on Kotaku? For what its worth, Telltale's games have been released monthly, not weekly, and our seasons have been consisting of 5 or 6 episodes, not 12.

I don't know how the XBLA release schedule works, but I imagine Microsoft could just put out two titles? Many months during Strong Bad's run on WiiWare, Nintendo would release a second title out onto the service along with the latest Strong Bad episode.

While it's still a traditional adventure game in the way the puzzles and story unfold, the game is direct control with the analog stick, like most 3rd person console games. It's refreshingly nice to be able to actually walk a character around the world in a Telltale game. I love point and click adventure games, but the change is welcome. In adventure games your exact precise movement from second to second isn't as important as it is in an action game -- your character in any adventure game is basically a nice looking slow motion cipher for the game cursor -- but letting the player steer the character around without always having to show their feet and all the places they can walk allows for some nice cinematic environments and situations that we couldn't get in a purely P&C game.

Does it come with a mouse?

This is great though. I love Telltales games, and the more of an audience they find the better.
