Warhammer 40k: Deathwatch |OT| Honor your chapter, crush the Tyranids (iOS)

Has there been any mention of a PC port? My iPad is too old to play it (iPad3) and most of the mobile 40K games have been ported.
No, but I wouldn't be surprised if it ended up on Steam eventually. In the interview above they mention that one of the reasons that they chose Unreal Engine 4 was because they wanted to launch it on other platforms. Of course they'll prioritize getting an Android version out, but once that is done I don't see a reason why they wouldn't make a PC version too. Unless they are restricted by the license.

Having a lot of fun with this game, my marines have reached the first level of chapter 7 (I believe). Enjoyable map, the massive amount of open space in the middle just lets my devastator marine lay waste to everything coming at him, very enjoyable.

I like a lot about this game, but if I had to pick a favourite thing I do love the level of detail put in individual power armours. It would have been very easy to just make all the character recolours of each other but instead most of the marines have unique helmets and shoulders and are adorned with various trinkets of their chapters. Very nice touch.

@Clunker: I've had the opposite experience with my iPad Air. The game is well optimized and requires way less power than I expected. Especially when I compare it to Magic Duels: Origins, that I'm also playing now.

Same experience on my Air too.
It IS power hungry but not that much (Magic Duels eats the battery as it there was no tomorrow)...and it's pretty incredible to look at so I'm ok.
On iPhone 6 the game is even much nicer too, but it's not that gentle on the battery.
It's a real beauty tough.
On Air you have to wait till tier 3 or 4 gears and marines to see all the fancy effects....on iPhone 6 they are really cool even on tier 1 (more metal effects).

I'm pretty sure it will be ported to PC (and Android) sooner or later.
I guess early next year.

They went with Unreal 4 for that reason too.

Talking about visual effects, does anyone have any flamers on their armies? I'm on an iPhone 5s and about one in five times whenever my flamer marine shoots it I get this odd flickering pixelated look in the fire effect, like it is a glitch in the Matrix or something. No other fire effects in the game seems to do this. In an odd way I kinda like it, it is a mad looking effect but I can't imagine that it is intentional.

Yeah...on anything but iPhone 6, 6+ and I guess Air 2 it's a pixellated yellow mess.
Not sure why...everything else screams polish and crispness.
On iPhone 6 it is better...actually it's cool because you do not notice (that much) the pixels.

I think it's because of the engine use...they scale the res somehow to save ram and you just see the huge pixels on anything but smaller screen or full res capable devices.

Explosions are cool on the other hand, with volumetric smoke and everything.

It's really weird compared to the general crispness of textures and the awesome looking marine models, expecially higher tier with all those blinking lights and animations...

For the ones interested, I did it!!!!
I finally was able to transfer the save between devices.

Just backup you game on Mac/PC with iTunes for device A and B.
Extract the save from desired device with iExplorer or iBackupBot.
Inject the save to desired device with iBackupBot (iExplorer doesn't work for some reason).
Restore backup on desired device....voilà!!!!!

If only I knew this before!!!!!

Now I can play the game on iPhone 6 too, where graphic is a bit more vibrant (I may decide to continue on Air, I'll see).

iCloud would be very welcome anyway.

Just finished chapter 8, pretty apocalyptic series of battles in there. Honestly not entirely sure where they can go next seeing as I've taken down a
Hive Tyrant.

Just had my whole team literally teared apart in Act 4-2 Veteran.

They came from everywhere all of a sudden, will all sort of skills.
Two nasty Tyrant Guards that gave +20 crit to an horde of those nasty pyro xenos, and they continued to hide preventing me to kill them.
My Sanguinary Vanguard (tier 4 Blood Angel) was the last man standing.
He honorably died 1 square from reaching the extraction point, but after having killed several xenos with his mighty reaction power fist.

Over 20K exp point lost.

You died, but you honored your chapter.

Amazing game.

Really wishing I had an iPad right now :)

I left more details on TA about the mission if you are interested (copy&paste).

I'm pretty sure it will come to PC too, don't worry.

Had another ultra awesome moment in the game yesterday (one of the many).
I was playing on Veteran Act 4-2 if I recall well, the one where you have to activate the bridge.
I used to breeze through the mission.

I was happily going to activate the bridge with a new tier 4 I just unlocked when hell broke.
They came from EVERYWHERE....all of a sudden I was surrounded by this nasty pyro xenos while TWO Tyrannid guards with the nasty +20 crit skill continue to shoot at me then hide from my LOS (awesome AI).

So I was trapped in the bridge and they come, and come, and come....
Tried to break through their line of defense on the upper bank...but I was soon overwhelmed.
Hicks and Ash, left to cover, died soon.
Bishop was next, ambushed by some pyros.
Last turn was movie epic....with Vasquez (devastator) surrounded by xenos giving up his life trying to protect Ripley (he killed 3 aliens with his 8 APs on overwatch).
Ripley died 1 square from the extraction points, but before giving up she killed another 4 xenos in a row with the reaction power fist skill.

Over 20K XP lost.

All this watched on TV via Airplay.

It was FREAKING EPIC.

God damn, I can't imagine losing 20k, that would end me. I lost 4k on a death once and that was a real bummer.

I gotta say, I wish the card shop machine would stop giving me high level Blood Angels. As much as I love their chapter, their appetite for self-destruction makes them real tough to use before you get enough exp to get their health regeneration perks. On easier maps half the damage done to my Space Marines is done by other Space Marines.

Can anyone that has played this and Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars tell me how they compare?

GR:SW is the only turn-based.strategy game that I've ever fallen in love with, and I'd love to find another game that scratches the same itch. I think the key with GR was that everything was streamlined and the game played out fairly quickly. I like the look of Deathwatch, but I don't want to pull the trigger and find out it's bloated and complicated when I'm just looking for a quick action fix.

In Veteran you proceed much faster and get much better loot.
20K are a lot yes, I was saving to unlock the second and third gear inventory slot, but to be honest it must hurt or the game would be a mindless walk in the park.

I took too much time in the 'safe' part of the river and crossed the bridge too slowly...it was my fault actually, I let the Xenos ammass on the other bank and I left alive those nasty Guards with the +20 crit to everyone skill (it stacks even).

They choose NOT to have permadeath, thanks the gods for that...it would have been MUCH worse.
When I lost my level 8 Barbarian in Warhammer Quest at hard I almost cried.
I really like this banked XP loss....keep you on your toes but it's not devasting enough to be frustrating.
Of course going full frontal without a squad of Assault Space Wolves with everything on tier 4 is not an option :)

Also, I think Rodeo games are always fun, but they are really at their best at higher difficulties.
Actually in that field, for small squad level gameplay, I think they are the best or among the best (on every platform).
The added xenos skills on Veteran are really a game changer.

Rodeo games aren't complicated and are pretty streamlined at the lower difficulty, but I wouldn't absolutely call them 'fast' or apt for a quick action fix.
It's a really cinematic experience thanks to the engine but it's a slow meditative affair gameplay wise and half the turn you just watch the enemy moving (thinking about your next moves or cursing the Xenos).

So I dunno (I didn't play GR:SW, sorry).

Well, my memories of Shadow Wars is about 3 years old by this point so they are a little hazy, but from what I recall it is actually a more complex game then Deathwatch in terms of raw mechanics (not by much though, both are fairly streamlined). That said Shadow Wars is probably a faster game in terms of you are always generally making forward progress while Deathwatch is more about careful and methodical movement while making sure you are never exposed. It's like chess except the pawns are aliens with blades for arms.

Deathwatch is actually more streamlined in it's mechanics. It's very straightforward, putting more focus on the design of maps and encounters for it's tactical depth. It's also more methodical and slower while SW is faster paced.

Played the first few missions last night. Starts off *super* simplistic. I'm definitely still in tutorial mode, haven't gotten enough EXP to level anyone up yet even. Hope it picks up steam quickly, I didn't need an entire mission to learn about Overwatch.

I just pulled my first tier IV character. That's a lot of abilities! Too bad he isn't a Blood Angel.

Any tips for the 2nd mission of the 9th chapter? I've taken a fair few attempts on it
and the combination of never ending Genestealers and the Hive Tyrant is just too overwhelming for my squad. I could potential deal with one threat but the combo never seems to leave enough Marines free to effectively damage the Tyrant without getting killed by him or keep the tide of Genestealers at bay.

I would trade my Blood Angel Sternguard with you if I could. The ability load out on the Lone Wolf is terrifying impressive.

I'm looking for that Lone Wolf since ages.
I would happily trade all my SEVERAL DIFFERENT tier 4 Blood Angels for him.
I have plenty of ultra cool tier 4 Space Wolf only weapons for him ready already.

Envious.

Which difficulty?
I remember (vividly) the Act 9 3 and 4 missions (you will understand :P) but not that one...but I'm about to hit that on Veteran soon so maybe I can help.

Just on normal :(.

Basically you are at the south end of a map and are told to proceed north to a cliff face, taking down a few minor Nid Warriors along the way. When you get to that cliff the Hive Tyrant enters and you get this steady endless stream of Genestealers. The level is quite long and thin and the range on the Tyrants gun (I presume it is a Venom Cannon) is massive, much greater then anything other then my Heavy Bolter so I am having trouble getting close to him.

Wow any tips for 9-3? Thought 9-2 was hard but not compared to this. I have 1 melee character but he dies
before the carnifax turns up
which leaves me horribly exposed.

I am thinking of basically playing through the game again just to level up my characters a bit more...

Try to keep everyone alive before the Carnifex shows up and hammer him with plasma charges.
I know...easier to say...

Wait for 9-4 :P

The thing about plasma is if it fails you are screwed...

What sort of set up did you approach this battle with? As for 9-4 can't we just blow the planet up with us on it? A glorious suicide sounds good at this point lol. I think I may have to level up my team.

Before using the charged plasma be sure to have your accuracy over 80% , maybe even using lower tier weapons.
Grenades and Grav Guns to keep big ones away always help!!!

Hmm ok I will try again tomorrow, if I have no success I am going to do some leveling up :P

Still on 9-2. Although with my latest pull I managed to get the IV plasma gun so perhaps I will give that a go although its accuracy bonus is super low, even with my top marine it is only in the mid 60%

9-3 wiped my entire team although I did get close to beating it. Half of the team are recent recruits and I probably need to level up them a bit first before I attempt it again.

Do you guys have a favorite mission for grinding experience points? 1-4 (Watch) is alright. It's incredibly easy on Normal and it gives each marine about 1500 xp.

This game looks great. Mobile platform exclusivity is always quiet depressing.

Consider me jelly guys. Superjelly.

During the beta Act 2-2 (The bridge) was my fav spot.
Activate the bombs fast then go back to extraction point.
You can sit there forever and gather 10-20K exp while watching TV.
Disclaimer: don't ruin yourself the game farming 100K exp.

I'm pretty sure it will come to PC in the future. (Just my guess but they hinted this in various interviews and WHQ IA ON steam already).

Welcome RodeoMatthew!

First of all, Deathwatch is incredible. The graphics, atmosphere and sense of tension outshines all of your past efforts (and I loved those too!).

But I did have one issue, which I am crossposting from a conversation we had in the iOS thread.

Why are abilities / traits so high in XP cost in Deathwatch? I'd like to unlock more - after all, that's a big part of each class - but I just can't see saving for them instead of upgrading your stats. This leads me to play the game as if every marine is the same regardless of class.

I just had my whole team wiped out and all saved XP gone, which thought me a valuable lesson to spend when you can. Sure you can grind earlier missions, but still seems silly to have such high XP values for abilities. For instance, the medic's ability to heal costs 8,000 XP. That's not only a lot of XP but an amount that you could easily save up for and lose before attaining since you lose all unspent XP if you die. So this encourages upgrading stats over class abilities.

I kind of wish there were separate skill points when leveling up to use for abilities/traits/war gear and allow XP to be used just for regular attributes.

I like the penalty losing unspent XP over your actual character. But the ability / trait costs make it even harder to use your class the way it should be used.

Well 'Normal' is one third of the game, we wouldn't expect you to have everything after completing so little of the game. Once Normal is completed you earn far more experience making it much easier to reach the higher tier abilities.

Would you have preferred say a style where you gain XP, level up and then recieve 1 ability point and 1 stat increase. Like a standard RPG / MMO?

I guess that's more of what I'm used to so that's what kind of throws me off. But I understand this isn't a typical RPG. I wasn't expecting to unlock everything. Just even some of the first abilities and traits are on the high side for using XP and with risk in saving XP, I now tend to shy away from them all together so it makes it so that the classes don't always feel as different as they should.

For the medic, for instance, maybe there could have been different tiers of its ability like the first one costs 1,000 XP for healing 25% of someone's health. Then 2,500 for 50%...5,000 for 75%.

That may not be the best example, but illustrates the idea. Kind of like a skill tree.

I am used to separate skill / stat points but it's probably too late to even think of implementing that now. And I'm sure you had reasons for why you chose the current system.

The game is still a blast so this isn't a deal breaker for me. Just a little annoying as far as really differentiating the classes at first.

I feel Rodeo should better market this aspect of the game, for their own good, in interviews etc...
I fear people will miss out higher difficulties, when normal is just really 1/3 of the game.

It's not an RPG that you play just once....you know the story and it's done.

It's a game you play mostly for the tactical challenge, grow, etc...
Playing through veteran now and feeling it is the real game (as the real WHQ was hard difficulty, but here the difference is even more evident) I feel they should state more clearly that normal is almost just an appetizer.
A long tutorial where you familiarize with the different possibilities, formations, marines types, weapons etc.
The real meat comes later.

(IMHO of course).

Speaking of veteran and skilled high tier marines, I recently discovered the skills that modify your stats checking for adjacent marines.
This changed completely my approach to the game wanting to explore these possibilities.
While before I scattered my marines now I move through maps in tight formation, to grant key marines extra AP, accuracy, etc....

Pure awesomeness.

Man, just finished 9-3 and that was a hell of a fight. Despite me getting quite a lucky early boost where I managed to full plasma charge + crit the Broodlord (took him from full health to about 10%) I still only crawled across the finish line with one marine left with 11 health on him. I can't imagine how nightmare-ish that fight can be if that Broodlord isn't finished in 1 turn. Very thankful that my final tactical was a Blood Angel so he could go full Black Rage on the remaining Nids and scored 4 kills in that 1 ability alone, although it almost gave me a heart attack when he targeted the bomb as one of his targets, luckily not doing enough damage to destroy it.

LOVED reading this, keep these coming!!!
I can tell you that not (almost) killing the Broodlord early is really nightmarish.
Do know that these kind of emergent 'movie like' situations are much more frequent in Veteran, where things get ugly really fast.

You backtrack, you regroup, you flee, you give everything just to reach extratpctions points with 2 HP, you curse the Emperor at next swarm watching the enemy turn in motionless despair...

HONOUR YOUR CHAPTER.
