Warhammer 40k: Deathwatch |OT| Honor your chapter, crush the Tyranids (iOS)

Woo! Normal difficulty completed. I was expecting a 10th act so it took me second to realize that I beat the game.

I think everyone did the same and stared puzzled at the screen a bit :)
Last act is freaking amazing IMHO.

Do not presume you have seen everything, the best has yet to come!!!

I'm on Act 6 at veteran now and I basically can't stop playing.
It's even much more satyfying because even if I keep getting lame new marines and I died several times wasting countless XPs, you progress much faster and I've almost fully developed all my champions...the combined skills now let me try complex maneuvers/strategies that are really amazing.

One thing I just (very succefully) tried is pumping up my mighty assault Sanguinary guard (with the super tier 4 power fist) APs, activate the +60 crit, activate the 'immortality' thing (can't recall the name) then sending him in the middle of the xenos pack, that I waited amassing in a chocke point.
The show lasted 4 full minutes of xenos dying, he ransacked about 10K alone.

I wish I could shoot a video of that.

LOVED reading this, keep these coming!!!

Ahh thanks. One thing I actually forgot about when I was writing up that min battle description that I should mention (because it is rather embarrassing) is I managed to stun my own marines on two different occasions. My team have two level three stun grenades on them which I used on the Carnifex, both times forgetting that that grenade has an area of effect ability so it stunned my marines in melee range. Basically much of the mid-game part of that fight involved a Carnifex and two Blood Angels just staring each other down, all unable to attack or move.

One thing I just (very succefully) tried is pumping up my mighty assault Sanguinary guard (with the super tier 4 power fist).

The Xeno Crusher fist? I have that exact weapon myself. Although its pitiful accuracy buff really stops me using it effectively. Certainly looking forward to the second difficulty wave to hopefully boost an assault marine to levels to be able to wield it well. Its damage potential is off the wall.

I feel Rodeo should better market this aspect of the game, for their own good, in interviews etc...
I fear people will miss out higher difficulties, when normal is just really 1/3 of the game.

It's not an RPG that you play just once....you know the story and it's done.

It's a game you play mostly for the tactical challenge, grow, etc...
Playing through veteran now and feeling it is the real game (as the real WHQ was hard difficulty, but here the difference is even more evident) I feel they should state more clearly that normal is almost just an appetizer.
A long tutorial where you familiarize with the different possibilities, formations, marines types, weapons etc.
The real meat comes later.

(IMHO of course).

Speaking of veteran and skilled high tier marines, I recently discovered the skills that modify your stats checking for adjacent marines.
This changed completely my approach to the game wanting to explore these possibilities.
While before I scattered my marines now I move through maps in tight formation, to grant key marines extra AP, accuracy, etc....

Pure awesomeness.

I don't think marketing like that would be very fruitful given that most people are not attracted to the idea of having to complete the game once to supposedly get to the real thing.

Saying things like that can be very discouraging to some people.

I get what you are saying and you are probably right.
It's obviously not true the 'real' game is veteran...that's just for me but I wanted to point it out here expecially here that there are many hard core gamers.
But I feel many will miss out a lot Rodeo put in the game playing just normal...the game offers much more.
Ie...I wasn't aware myself (and I was pretty informed about the game having played the beta) that veteran is not just harder, Xenos get skills that change fundamentally the tactical approach.
Actually I can't find that info anywhere, and imho it's important for people looking for more, deeper tactical challenges, etc...
I generally never replay games but I'm replaying DW and really enjoying it more than my first play through, feeling it very fresh.
Unfirtunately I perfectly know I'm in the minority.....the vast majority of people will play just normal and complain they didn't fully got all skills, items etc...

How does it play on an iPhone 5S? Seems like it'd be cramped as hell :(

Totally fine, I'm a 5s. During my entire time playing I've missclicked once during the tutorial prologue campaign. Each object you have to tap is fairly generously sized and you have to double tap to confirm any action so once I got into the swing of the game I've never felt the UI was against me. The one thing that is a bit tough is the 'sell space marine' button is a little small and annoying to tap, I presume to make it so you don't tap it by mistake but the game has a second step confirmation so it seems a little overprotective.

Bought :)

I just impulse bought this game based on your guys' impressions. I really loved Hunters so I'm hoping this scratches the same itch.

And chapter 9 is done. What a hell of a mad endurance of a final level that was. By the end I had pulled out ever trick my marines had just to increase their damage and finally I luckily prevailed with 2 crossing the finishing line. Although the real medal of honour has to go to my assault marine who faced down a Hive Tyrant and laid and unholy level of damage into it before the beast took his life. His valor honours his chapter.

Now on to the harder difficulty mode. I had a quick go through the first level and the increased heath and more numerous numbers of enemies was noticeable. Although they didn't do much more damage to me but I predict the tougher Tyranids will do.

Congrats!!!
I just hit Act 8 on Veteran.
Some parts are manageable, but some parts are insane...had to really try everything to made to the end of some missions....usually rarely with the full team, often with just 2 marines alive.
I lost count of how many XP I lost...probably more than 100K combined.

I actually like difficulty is not constantly rising but there are spikes instead...I never know what to expect in the levels.
Some are really tense and heart pumping, and the game throw surprises and death at my face.

As I was really unlucky with cards, I had the opportunity to keep my team for the whole campaign so far...so despite the various deaths I was able to to develop them and I really really grew attached to them as in a RPG. 4 champions and 1 tier 4.

I dunno if Rodeo has any plans to expand this, but I hope they find a place for the Salamanders. I've got a tactical Ultramarine with a flamer and he is devastating the early game on veteran. His proudest moment was on the 2nd level with the flesh walls you have to cut through. He was burning through one of these walls and 'accidentally' killed the 3 Termagants hiding just beyond it all in 1 shot. Silly xenos need to learn to stop standing in lines.

I'm SO IN LOVE with this game.
Actually on Act 8-4 veteran....all tier 3 and one tier 4 Sanguinary guard.
Half the skills for everyone, some a bit more, 1 slot per marine.
As I was REALLY unlucky with packs during all veteran, they are still the group I started the vet campaig with....I found in the cards just basic marines and the occasional tier 2 or 3 item.

Died countless times, many missions were succefully by a hair.
So tense, so awesome.
I'm now pretty stuck...already changed strategies but so far no luck...the big guys overwhelm me and tear me apart (I refuse to grind)...land I do not even know when it's over.

Incredible game, really.

I REALLY need a Lone Wolf tough.

I REALLY need a Lone Wolf tough.
My Lone Wolf finally got enough abilities to be useful. I only have tier II equipment for the assault class and without the +40 critical he wouldn't have done much damage.

I'm up to Act IV on Veteran and the game is more fun when the Tyranids have more abilities.

Yeah definitevely....alien skills are a game changer.
I'm on Act 8-4 on veteran and for all campaign I was really unlucky...nothing over tier 2 BUT one item (see below), especially just basic marines :(
Using now 2 assault, 1 devastator and 2 tactical.
I'm pretty full of tier 3 and 4 weapons for Space Wolves..... :(

Speaking of luck tough...I found an incredible item that grant 5% damage at every turn, BUT you gain 20% HP for each kill...
Gave it to my Sanguinary Guard and he was able to survive impossibile situations.
He didn't survive the attack of 2 of those damn crab like huge aliens plus around 5-6 normal ones tough.
But I'm getting there.

Sometimes you just pick up a new item or skill, and everything changes again.
Love it.

Have you tried using rocket launchers or lascannons yet? 3 AP for a single shot is risky especially when you might miss your target.

Have you tried using rocket launchers or lascannons yet? 3 AP for a single shot is risky especially when you might miss your target.

I did for some previous missions (I have TWO Lament of Heroes) but not this time.
My problem with those weapons is the 3AP cost that leave you exposed, which is critical when there are Tyrant Guards with those plasmas around...even if the Lament of Heroes grants you extra APs for first 2 turns.

I use them only if I know there are just big guys, I need a huge firepower and I can shield them with others somehow.
Those weapons combined with the items that grants you critical and double damage to big guys were a life saver on some occasions.

While less successful, I'm having a TON OF FUN rolling an assault based team now.
I like close and personal...

Boys...I LOVE when I crit damage to death a big one with m reaction skill using power fist.

Also I can take amazing screenshots :P

So I'm stuck asking why they can't produce something like this for PC (or major consoles). Make it F2P. Let people buy big names from their favorite chapters or extra campaigns or whatever. It'll fund itself.

Three of my guys have the Charge ability (gain 2 AP for movement) and that should be useful together with 3 AP weapons so that you can back to cover after firing. I'll give it a try the next time I reach an open map.

As a matter of fact I used Lament of Heroes a lot on a BA champion with charge.
I then changed it for a UM devastator, because of the synergies with others UM in the squad.

Maybe not my best idea.

But if you can manage to use 3 APs weapons 1 every 2 turns (because of charge) it's great.

It will come to PC eventually, I'm pretty sure....they used Unreal Engine 4 probably for that among other reasons.

Rodeo is known for premium stuff even if they do have consumable iAPs in their games.
Honestly I really like it staying this way.

Extra chapters and campaigns will be sure paid iAPs (but this isn't a F2P game).

Anyway, keep hoping!!!
I guess when things are settled down on iOS, multiplayer is out and maybe first expansion, they will announce something on PC end eventually Android too!

I guess that's more of what I'm used to so that's what kind of throws me off. But I understand this isn't a typical RPG. I wasn't expecting to unlock everything. Just even some of the first abilities and traits are on the high side for using XP and with risk in saving XP, I now tend to shy away from them all together so it makes it so that the classes don't always feel as different as they should.

For the medic, for instance, maybe there could have been different tiers of its ability like the first one costs 1,000 XP for healing 25% of someone's health. Then 2,500 for 50%...5,000 for 75%.

That may not be the best example, but illustrates the idea. Kind of like a skill tree.

I am used to separate skill / stat points but it's probably too late to even think of implementing that now. And I'm sure you had reasons for why you chose the current system.

The game is still a blast so this isn't a deal breaker for me. Just a little annoying as far as really differentiating the classes at first.

Striking a balanced against what's easily understandable for new users yet complex enough for the more hardcore is always a challenge. Hopefully this is something we can deeper into in future titles.

If your having trouble telling the classes apart, I wrote a guide over on touch arcade; here's a link directly to the post

I don't mind complexity at all. In fact, it's easy to understand the upgrades. But the expense of them is what is an issue. There are games with very complex skill trees that I've enjoyed. It's more about the fact that a trait or ability has such high costs vs. stat upgrades that it is quite difficult to save for some of them without the high costs of possibly losing all of your XP on a mission. It's painful to lose a few thousand XP but when you are talking up to 20,000, that's a massive risk. And I'm not saying the risk reward system is bad. In fact, I like it.

I just think the ability, trait and wargear slots are sometimes way too high IMO (and I consider myself somewhat of a hardcore gamer, definately not a casual gamer). 12,000 for a second wargear slot? And many of the abilities don't seem significant enough of a benefit to save for. The ones that are significant are very expensive.

That's just IMO.

And I do understand the difference between the classes. It's just to have any major benefit from it is costly.

Still stuck on Act 8-4 on Veteran (it's INSANE)...but I made some progresses.
I swapped a glorious melta gun for a 20 damage Grav Gun....which add the plus to stun the big enemies that cannot anymore one shot my guys due to the super plasma charge.
Together with flamers and crit enhancing I was able to kill all the Hive Guardians...meanwhile two assault marines with the passive skill that gives 20% health back on every kill took care of the AVALANCHE of xenos coming from the stairs.
Too bad I forgot about the Pyros that annihilated my squad (well packed to get the extra APs) in one turn....my bad.

I feel this is the right path to go with what I have.
I wish I unlocked previously the second warmer slots tough.

If possibile, I'm loving the game even more now that I'm stuck and trying everything.

These bad boys finally DID IT.
An incredible tense game....Hicks brought down TWO crab like aliens (those HUGE things with 90% damage dumping in the front) with cleave at last turn.
I wouldn't have survived a next turn.

oMojzTc.png

AWESOME.

Huh, that is an odd coincidence. We are sharing 3 of the same space marines in our team line ups. The 2 Ultramarines and Hicks, my other 2 are the Blood Angel champion tactical and the Blood Angel Sternguard. I'm rolling deep with the BA!

Anyway, congratulations on your victory. I'm currently on 4-2 on vet (that is the bridge lowering mission) and it is kicking my ass currently, but every attempt is taking me closer and closer to the finish.

My team is almost family to me now...so much I do not know if I would swap anyone even if I unlock some tier 4 badass marine.
The thing is that this magnificent game has so many layers....and I just found out a new one.

Normal you will unlock the first gear and some spare skills, and play brute forcing the game but the occasional map.
Veteran is where you unlock almost all skills and find many gears...the sheer variability of combinations is a game on its own.
By the end of veteran, if you didn't swap your marines (I have the same since last act on normal) it feels almost like an RPG and you combine skills and gears always in new ways, getting tactically deeper and deeper.
As a matter of fact just changing gears let me complete the Act where I was stuck for days...I even one shotted those aliens that before always shredded me.
I can't wait for Heroic already.

DeathWatch update is up.

It's a delta one, kudos to Rodeo.

Any tips for grinding? I feel ashamed for doing it but... must... get... card packs.

The last mission of the first act,
Wound
is kinda OK, as you
can just stand still and kill the enemies as they come for you. There's a lot of them and they're all weak, so there's not any real risk involved for a well-equipped team. You can rack up about 7-8k XP to divide for the team, you get 6 Requisition points each time and some crappy gear you can sell for an additional 4 Requisition.

About to start last mission on Veteran.
Most amazing, tense, nerve wrecking and generally awesome game I played in recent memory.

My last encounter with a Carnifex (surrounded by other absurdly skilled aliens) left my squad exhausted.

Act 2 'Regroup' mission on heroic.

I regrouped in the middle of the bridge (big mistake) neglecting over watch (big mistakes never come alone).

I was pinned down there for half an hour (real time).
They were EVERYWHERE, and the swarm never ceased.
I think I had like 20 constant enemies in my line of sight (much more judging by the constant alien disturbing noises).
When I finally broke through towards the extraction points I activated EVERYTHING I had....grenades, crit/damage/AP modifiers.
I had to walk over cadavers and cadavers. Blood everywhere.
And everyone made it.

It was GLORIOUS.

Had a total disaster with this today. Was frustrated I'm clearly missing a class (have multiple Devastators which I don't like, a single Assault which I love, and a couple of the grunt guys) so I bought two packs. Didn't get anything too interesting.

Started the first mission with the Guards(?). Big guys, 2 X 2 size. Was excited to finally have some variety. A couple turns in the game froze up during enemy turn. I restarted and it wiped the 4K+ experience off all my guys as if they died... Fucking weak.

So then I restart the mission and it hangs in the same spot. Well shit. Keeps hanging in the same spot after force-closing the app and after restarting the phone.

So that's that I guess. I figure I might could exit mission again (since I paid penalty already), replay a previous mission, and try again. But fuck that I'm super frustrated right now. RIP this game.

I can't imagine that any assaults can go toe to toe with a Carnifex and leave that missions alive.

Actually, everyone survived :P

HINT: notice the green glowing thing behind my assault Space Wolf?
It's a triplex plasma cannon, overcharged plus various crit and damage modifiers.

Smooth as silk :)

I went to buy this game the other day and saw a ton of one-star reviews with basically the same story. Didn't end up getting it. Hopefully they'll fix whatever the problem is.

Huh. One says it hung in exactly the same spot it hung for me. That's troubling. It wouldn't be so bad but the Quit Mission penalty is super harsh given the EXP curve. You can't possibly get enough experience in a single mission to buy a useful upgrade, so all your dudes will always have at least a couple missions' worth of experience on them. So pretty much any time you hit this bug you're going to be seriously set back.

Beyond EXP problems, the whole progression system is kind of dumb. Like I mentioned I only have one guy that can use melee weapons but I get melee weapon drops at the end of missions all the time. I have 3 duplicates of this axe that I can't equip on anyone. You can sell gear but the exchange rate is peanuts.

There's clearly a good and interesting core to this game but gotta say I'm real disappointed in it.

So I've finished a few of the beginning missions. Does the enemy variety ever change (or the maps for that matter)? I've seen the exact same guys for like 6 missions. Also, does the pace improve? The game seems extremely slow at this point.

The same size dudes get guns eventually. Later on you see big dudes with armor up front you're probably supposed to flank them but as I've been saying in my last couple posts the game crapped out on me in that mission so I don't know if it's a one-off or if those dudes start showing up consistently.

Yeah the pace is super slow, upgrades take a long time.

If you still have the 'never ending enemy turn' bug after the first patch (they are working on 1.2 patch for the remaining causes) you can try this, works for many and worked for me first time I encountered the bug (60 hours in).

The hang occurs generally when the camera pans towards one of your marines (because you have been hit etc...but you were far from the screen) and something else happens.
If you manage to to move the camera so it frames the said marine, the game will proceed.
Do this....kick the game out of memory....then reload.
When you see the splash screens while the game loads the turn pitch the screen and tilt the camera...try to zoom out as far as you can.
You have a small time window before enemy turn starts.
Sometimes you have to try several times...but besides waiting for the new patch it's worth trying.

As for the XP and loot...it starts slow but at veteran and heroic you get them quite a lot.

To specify better: you can easily complete the game with tier 1-2 marines, very few skills and just first slot.
You are not supposed to fully skill everyone, 3 slot them and get everything at normal.
By the time you will hit heroic (it's worthy, it's not just more difficult, gameplay changes) you will have them fully skilled and 3 slotted...and you will acquire a ton of tier 4 items plus you will start to get the tier 4 marines).

Try pinching your fingers in and out on the loading screen (level loading screen) next time the freeze happens. The fix has worked with me and a lot of other people.

If the problem does persist contact support. The turn around for solving my issues has been superb (less than a day!)

It took me over 70 hours to notice something really damn cool.

The (very cool) moving backgrounds of the Acts are actually part of the same picture (in 3D)....if you move fast from Act 1 to Act 9 you can notice it (especially from 4 to 5 and 8 to 9).
Seems almost one of those cool NASA animations.

It shows once again the incredible attention to detail by Rodeo Games.

Meanwhile, in the Astolat sector....

I'm literally sweating....just completed 8-4 heroic....after like 10 tries and a final epic struggle with those damn crab like things....
There are TWO at the end of the mission....plus tens and tens of genestealers....I had everyone still alive when they appeared....BOTH WITH SKILLS....
One had the missile thing, the other one CRIT IMMUNITY and 30 REGEN....PANIC (plus, of course, the mega shield in the front).
Long story short....half an hour later I have only Vasquez and his plasma tier 4 cannon and Ash...a tier 3 assault Space Wolf (also known as the poor man's Lone Wolf) with the tier 4 power fist and charge.
Nothing else.
After half an hour of chasing and fleeing...I noticed in the lower part of the level there is narrow path where the damn crab can't enter....but I couldn't damage it enough to kill it...and he regen always.
ANOTHER half an hour later...I tried a new thing....risking getting hit once...
Basically I attracted it to my devastator with hunker down...hit him with the assault from the back...and finally he turned around...so I could hit him with a charged plasma...he turned again, and I finished it with the last power fist (charge).
That was the only way I could kill him...because of regen...only 2 fists and a plasma charge with 100% accuracy could work.

It was frigging epic.

Vasquez and Ash are now eating lobster rolls.

So, for someone who just started out on normal (next level is 2-1), what would you recommend I spend the xp on in what order, specifically when to spend on levelling up or not?

So, for someone who just started out on normal (next level is 2-1), what would you recommend I spend the xp on in what order, specifically when to spend on levelling up or not?

I would first level up accuracy till you have over 70% combined with your preferred weapon (notice higher level weapons require higher level accuracy, so you may want stick with normal ones for a bit even if you are lucky and find a tier 4 early).
Then a skill or first slot if you found some useful gear (like grenades).
Don't worry about crit and never touch HP on normal (or heroic even).

That is valid for normal only.
Veteran is more skills and crit.

Heroic is almost all crit, skills, HP...everything :)

WDIT: missed a part.....on normal level up as soon as you can, accuracy if you need it as a priority.
No point in having wonderful skills or critical damage, if you do not hit anything.

Thanks, but what do you mean by combined, stats accuracy + weapon accuracy?

So, for this space wolf, is his accuracy 73% for the pistol?

And I've been buffing the health because my heroes tended to die a lot in the previous rodeo games, but I guess this game is a tad easier as I haven't had anyone die yet. *knocks on wood*
