Warhammer 40k: Deathwatch |OT| Honor your chapter, crush the Tyranids (iOS)

Really want to play this. The Deathwatch are so goddamn badass. If you consider that Space Marines are already genetically enhanced superhumans neurologically linked to their armor and using weapons that fire .75 calibre explosive rounds (basically assault rifles that fire rockets), undeniably the most awesome fighting force in the galaxy... and then the Ordo Xenos drafts the very best of them from every different chapter to serve as their Chamber Militant, paint their armor black and give them even more specialized training and equipment, after which they go out and wipe out entire enemy fleets with small Kill Teams of fully kitted-out badasses... and when they go back to their chapter they get to keep the Deathwatch shoulder pad to show the rest of their chapter just hod goddamn awesome they are. yeah.

It's live on steam now for about ~€24 (don't have exact price as steam treats my office as though it's in the UK, £19 discounted down to £17.

Sorry if the price has changed over time, but this leaves the PC version at ten times more expensive than the current price of the iOS version. This seems a little extreme for a graphics overhaul.

Question is, does the PC version still have MTX, or was the design changed to only get stuff via gameplay? If the latter I can understand the price hike.

My Review for the game. Rated it a Buy Link

No store all content their for playable unlocks and its a great primer for new gamers and has enough for someone like me to play it as well.
As someone who almost didn't touch it due to these guys last title and its issues I am so damn happy I picked it up

Saw this is out on Steam, but even after reading some impressions in this thread, I'm unsure whether it's legitimately good or just good in the context of an ios game and the lower standards/requirements that come along with that.

The designs look suitably badass.

I only played a small amount on the tablet but to me its legitimately good as a strategy light title. You get to do a good deal of outfitting, you have SOME of the Warhammer atmosphere, the combat engine is fairly solid, and its got good length. I also love the mission length its just perfect to get in and out and maybe work a strategy before your on to the next.

sounds good to me

It's legit good. There are a lot of great IOS games, but there are fewer that are great regardless of platform. 80 Days and Sorcery, Downwell, The Room, Monument Valley, etc. Warhammer Deathwatch is definitely one of those.

Having fun so far. My Ultras are doing their thing.

I adore the little switchups when you get the legendary weapons. Its so nice to have a Warhammer game that still gives the atmosphere but doesn't dump you into it. Its depthy enough to be interesting but not super dense.

How are the new Chapters (Dark Angels, Imperial Fists and Black Templars) shaping up? One of the steam reviews mentioned that they were a little under cooked and lacked the level of content of the OG Chapters. It especially mentioned that they lacked any tier 3 or 4 marines which would be a shame due to them being fairly unusable beyond the first play through of the game. That would be a real pity if so.

They are very undercooked, which is sad. They only have tier 1 and 2 units, so they're only good for a while before being outclassed. It's a pity, as I would have loved to run Dark Angels.

I've played the first six missions of this, and mostly agree!

You can still see some of the mobile stylings, both in the clunky UI clearly made for touch and the progression system, but the core gameplay here is quite solid. XCOM lite in the 40k universe seems like an apt description. I'll definitely play more of it.

Game is taking a hammering on the steam reviews.

Personal gripe is the lack of any option to adjust speed of unit movement/other stuff. Speed toggle for aliens is fine, but would be great if it could be set to be on all the time.
Additional stuff goes really, really slowly. There's a mission where explosions happen around the map at the start of your turn, and camera moves between them slowly and they happen slowly - can't be sped up and gets extremely annoying after a few turns on that map.

Well, I like the game but I am desperate for anything WH40k so my opinion is perhaps not as objective as it should be. I would argue that the game could do with the following:

Gameplay Changes:
- Full fleshed out chapters (the 3 PC ones only have up to tier 2 units, while the original chapters go up to T4).
- More booster options (normal booster, marine booster, gear booster...all at variable costs)
- Spend xp to up character's max AP (at an absolutely obscene cost though, in order for it to be a very long term goal without breaking the game wide open. I'm talking hundreds of thousands of XP)

UI Changes:
- Sound options (turn off the music, voice confirmations, etc)
- Speed options (allow me to put the speed up option on permanently)
- Tooltips (everywhere for everything, including chance to hit in stages)
- Confirmations options (disable confirmations for specific actions)
- Ability to mass sell gear or marines

Yeah, if I weren't such a big 40k fan I probably would have dropped this already. A bit more work and consideration for the PC port and some interface/balancing improvements (they got rid of the F2P stuff, but not rid of its grindy progression) would've made this an even better experience.

Speaking of production values, it's also the same exact explosion animation every time, regardless whether it's supposed to be a melta bomb, a krak grenade, a rocket launcher, a Tyranid warp blast or a collapsing vortex of warp energies. >_>

90% of the asset production budget seems to have gone to the space marines in the selection screen (and it shows).

I'm still enjoying the game, don't get me wrong, but I'm considering putting it on my top 10 goty list for the year and a more critical eye and thorough analysis is required for that to happen, I can't just waive these obvious shortcomings by pointing to its mobile roots.
