oh and speaking on the subject of controls, how does one shoot a charged lightning shot?
I've tried holding down L1 both in normal and hovering, and a number of variations, but all I get is the little lightning shock; incredible, 70 hours in and I still don't know...

Hold L1 and you should hear a revving sound, also the the circle around your reticle will begin to fill up. When it's completely filled then the lightning shot is completely charged. Shoot it at areas with lots of metal.

Hmmm...guess I wasn't holding L1 long enough; I heard the revving sound once in a while, but never saw the reticule meter....

Good seeing you last night for a couple of games, JFK, but I was a bit surprised since it was pretty late (though you could say the same about me) ;)

Oh, and CSSer. your profile said you were in one of those rank spamming servers; I hope you were giving them a hard time and have not fallen to their level.....

Well, see y'all during the weekend

anyone noticed the extremely fast rifle firing sometimes?

the fire rate is the same, lag might cause what you see differently. It seems faster when you start hitting the head because they die instantaneously. Just try getting on top of a ledge and fire at the enemy below, 2-3 second kills with assault rifle :)

What happened was I was in a tank and a guy jumped in, he was in the turret and his rifle was blazing. He wasn't hitting anyone or anything. Just unloading.

Well, I don't see how they could do anything... Since people can make their own ranked serv, I think there's no solution to this.

That's because you didn't reserve!

They could put a limit cap on a per game basis and not let people customize that part of the game OR they could check out the fools that go a billion pts on like 1 day and ban their candy ass.

This afternoon all SCE servers were down, so maybe they fixed some stuff.

That said, you always seem to see improved stuff where people don't :p

Can't check now, I'll try tomorrow and post my thoughts

Dear Warhawk players,

Recently we have observed a bump in the number of "stats padding" games (games where players artificially pad their stats).

Please be forewarned that this practice will not be tolerated and players engaging in such actions will be subject to the Sony EULA banning rules.

We will wipe the offending player's stats and institute a 1 day ban. If the same behavior is again observed these players will be banned for much longer periods.

Thank you for your continued cooperation and support.

What do you mean point cheating? You mean base-campers? Or the organized servers where people group together to gain points quickly?

Nothing they can do about the former since it's been around since Quake CTF. For the latter, a simple scan of cummulative points totals of games should be a dead giveaway. There should be a bell-curve for points distros, so totals shouldn't be as high as they would be in "cheater" games.

But IMO, I don't see a problem with it. I am now a Commander with just over 2000 points. I do have like 100 ribbons (mostly for warhawk merits), but the rank system is totally broken. I figure the people who are point-whoring can get what they want, a high rank once the system is fixed. People like me, who just want to see what they can do to help their team, will be satisfied with whatever rank they get. It's not like high rank gives super powers or anything. Beyond Wing Commander or so, it seems to be just a bunch of ugly paint schemes and uniform colors. PEACE.

That might not be a bad thing. Wiping stats is what some people want. I never understood why online stats reset wasn't a standard thing. Wiping stats just gives cheaters a chance to start off with padded stats instead of augmenting already established real stats. PEACE.

EDIT: Anyone else notice that most pilots don't know a simple Immelman Turn?
immelmannturnjq4.png

Maybe not the best way to avoid a missle, but if you boost, chaff, and then pull this move with BOTH sticks, you will have a lock on them before they realize you're heading back their way. My teammates must wonder how my k:d is always so high when I'm such a retard on the ground. I am such a one-trick pony. :D

Never said it was a bad thing.

And they will wipe the cheating players' stats, not everyone's.

And ban 'em

Another quick question... Is there any way to play Warhawk without the disc in the drive? I notice the install option doesn't use as much data as the download version....

I call it the Battlefield Effect. Total warfare games like this are addictive as hell, and this one is just so well-balanced for everything except maybe CTF. TOW spamming has drawn some of those maps to a turtle's pace. But I can't complain, I never flag cap anyway. PEACE.

CTF is great... quick spawn back owns, not much you can do if good defense is up.

-------------------------

Word for everyone, please dont run off with tanks from our base in CTF. Very hard to defend without an tank if they try really hard.

Also, leave all 4x4's next to the base, in flame condition... please dont use it as it might spawn back exactly when they pick our flag :D

Still need to work on dodging missiles. I got the hang of using my Chaff type weapon to escape, but I still really suck at actually being able to dodge them. Sometimes I will lock-on a foe and fire two or three times and they will dodge every single one without even using a Chaff! I need to get that good. >_<

Dude, most "pilots" don't use pro controls, they don't know how to boost, they don't know to head for the GROUND when locked on by a missile instead of freaking out and heading straight up all the time, and they don't even know what direction they want to go when they take off.

I think the idea of an Immelmann will have to wait, just flying upside down would be a huge feat for these guys. :p

The worst is when you accidentally get in a plane with one of them, and you're the passenger. >_<

Usually the TOW spammer is just one really annoying person who doesn't help his team, doesn't leave his warhawk, but has the white and red warhawk from all the points he accumulated in CTF. What my team did was just keep 2 warhawks on him at all times while the rest of the team capped the flag (or maybe I was just pissed and would always gun for his warhawk as soon as I saw him takeoff :p), and the convoy would always keep a decent distance so if one gets towed, next one picks it up pretty fast. And it feels so good to TOW a TOW spammer :D

Yeah, frequently when I see an enemy plane going over the TOW point, I'll stop escorting and hunt him down before he can fire. I don't think they're that big a problem in CTF, since they don't respawn all that quickly. If your carrier gets hit, it's not hard to get someone else down there to get the flag and keep it moving.

I think the real problem in CTF is that you'll have some enemies sitting on their flag trying to return it, and guys on your team will be at a slight distance shooting away. Fuck that, fly/run/drive right the hell in and grab the flag to reset their timer. If you die, so what, someone else will be right behind you to carry it further. And if you have all the spawn points on the map, everyone can converge on it easily at any time while the enemy has more trouble.

Saw something weird in a CTF match on Archipelago earlier tonight. With about 5 minutes left, the other team got our flag through a very thorough network of controlled zones. We were relatively organized, with a couple camp-happy mofos watching the flag. We had no idea how they did it. Somehow, they got the flag out of the base in the melee surrounding a lighting attack, and avoided all our nodes. Before anyone notices, the flag is in their base and capped, and in between the 'Oh fuck's was a funny discussion about how to get a flag carrier back to a base, past all sorts of defense, without falling into the water. We could only conclude that it was the work of a very good pilot, a very trusting carrier, and some rather crafty escorts creating an organized diversion. Seriously, the wierdest thing I've seen in the game. The mad scramble for planes, and ensuing kamikaze assault was a treat. We lost though. :( PEACE.

EDIT: If it's not clear, we thought the flag carrier hopped on top of a warhawk and got flown over to base. We've tried as much to to get four people over to a zone before, but unless you creep there, they always seem to fall off. It would be cool if there was a way to do it if the pilot and carrier could synch their movements.

Hey, I don't use pro controls either and I don't think I'm bad with hawks :p

You can do pretty neat stuff with basic controls actually. Powerslide is very useful for that.

hey, dont diss us... I was happy to go with sea monkey and get the flag, but for god sakes, there is either 15 campers at the base or none... it seems as there is no middle ground...

So if there are less than 3 of them, I am happy to stay, with my little tank and get some points :).

Which is why I create a defensive perimeter and when I'm satisfied the flag is safe I go out to get the flag, best of both worlds.

I got recommended for a medal yay me.

What you can't do is dodge missiles most effectively or efficiently, do tight vertical loops, aforementioned Immelmanns, and other more complex aerobatics that get the guys who powerslide square in your sights. :p Those canned evasion moves are useless. Learn pro controls! BUY DROPSHIP AND HEROES OF THE PACIFIC!

And good flag defense gets little respect because it's rarely seen. When you've got 10 people lurking at the base and they don't come out or start shooting until after the flag has been grabbed, and end up letting the guy slip away half the time anyway because he planned his escape well, you start to get a little contemptuous of the typical flag defender. But if you're not that guy, and are really trying your best to stop people from taking the flag, you're an important asset to the team, so don't worry about what people say. Defense IS important.

I've almost got the Master Defense badge, all I have to do is kill 7 flag carriers in one round. But I'm not going to camp without defending properly to get it. I'm going to play normally until I'm in a CTF game where we end up in one of those exchanged flag positions, and just go apeshit trying to get our flag back. :p

immelman can be done, its one of the preset loops in basic controls (but I prefer pro controls since you lock on better when doing all your loops to chase the bad guy).

I know what you guys mean, people don't understand the whole timer concept. One game I had a GREAT escort, but the funny thing is I was the only one to pick up the flag after it dropped... 5 times!!! Escort was just fighting away, wtf o_O

Oh god earlier I was playing a CTF match on Archipolio wha'ever and EVERYONE was in the base defending the flag I had no chance getting the spawn points.

I swear one TOW or Cluster bomb would have killed the whole team I've never been so claustraphobic.

It's just ridiculous when you're on a team like that. I'm sick of having to recap zones, go for the flag AND kill the enemy flag carriers that get away.

I really hope we'll see a big turnout of gaffers playing this weekend. I feel kinda woozy today, so I'm gonna stay home and play some tonight.

Also, WasabiKing: PLEASE move this thread back to Gaming Discussion. I know you're reading. :p

I'm not moving it back, another mod moved it here cause it's an online only game, and I agree.

I Immelmann all day, but I'm fine with flying upside down for a kill. Style points FTW

in situations like that you just have to go cap a lot of points yourselves. It seems like a lot of people just dont like flying warhawks, so after I capped about 2-3 points, you just saw different respawns of the team everywhere.

Most can't even pull off a spin. And whats with the guys that think standing still in a dog fight match is good strategy? I almost feel guilty shooting them! I wonder is this a newbie or some idiot thinking hes gonna lock on easier if he stays still!

PS: Theres a bunch of guys out there that use machine guns only, and then they bitch because they can't get kills, like WTF! You have missiles & mines use em!

this game rocks, a perfect 9!

just got the game from gamefly

wow if this game had a single player campaign, it would easily get a 10

hope the developers get rewarded with great sales.

it's amazing how much 4-5 people can make a difference, Manky and Freethough's team had 4 ppl always knowing what to do, while my team I was always #1 because the rest of the team would clump together in one zone or respawn point >_< ohhh how this game frustrates me sometimes

*what's up with the rankings? I just got promoted to Commander, and technically I only have enough points for Wing Leader (have required medals except Team Cross)

Zones is the only one I refuse to play willingly until either I know a Gaffer is playing or they put in a party system.

Trust me, when I see someone do the canned maneuvers, I know I'll be able to nail them easily with missiles. With pro controls, I can dodge an entire string of swarm missiles while still obtaining missile locks on the guy I'm chasing. There's just no substitute for full control.

Yeah, great games today , I got stuck on that red team too Icechai, they were terrible.

Hey Sea Manky, that medal I was talking about was Warhawk Exemplary, I think the requirement might have been 25 kills. Doesn't matter either way, I just got it along with my Master Homing Missile badge in a dogfight on the Threespeech server. :D

edit: I think Raist was talking about the set evasions, a quick tap up produces a perfect Immelman turn, just like the diagram. I do agree though, I see someone do a tight barrel-roll and their 'hawk just turns into a giant bull's-eye.

Yeah, I don't remember when I got that one. What I got in that match was the Warhawk Machineguns badge. Strangely, the requirements for that badge are the same as those for the Aerial Achievement medal (1000 Warhawk machinegun kills globally, 10 in a round), but I didn't get it. :/ Maybe I need to do the IAR requirement again?

I've also got the global requirements for Legion of Merit and Team Deathmatch, but the IAR requirements are hard as hell for those. :X

There's another medal, I forget the global requirements but I know I've done it, the IAR requirement is 50 combat points and I'm fairly sure I've done it a couple of times without getting the medal. Was that your first Warhawk badge? I'm certain it's going to be mine.

I'm missing three ribbons though; special ops, outstanding volunteer and the one where you have to make 1 kill with each troop weapon. I did get special ops once, after the stats were fixed but I never actually received it.
