Watch Dogs biggest non-GTA/BF/CoD/FIFA UK launch, 17th biggest all-time, 76% PS4/XB1

I'm not arguing game copies, I'm arguing console sales. It won't move as many machines as WD did for PS4 or Titanfall for X1.

Speaking of hype, Titanfall was hyped to hell and back in gaming news, WD was hyped pretty much everywhere, people who aren't core gamers knew what it was as far back as last year. Destiny? not so much, it's 3 months away and the chatter outside core gaming communities is virtually non existent.

Fair enough. :)

Great news for everyone. I hope Ubisoft is smart enough and will put Assassin's Creed and Watch Dogs on longer alternate development cycles. They need to advance their open world technology, it's miles behind Rockstar's in terms of definition.

It's so ridiculous to think about how much they spent on Destiny vs how many people even know it exists/give a damn

76% shows cross gen needs to die now.

I think it's more that early console adopters are more likely to be early game adopters. The lifetime current gen:last gen sales ratio for WD will probably be lower than that.

As far as why it sold so quickly overall, I think the answer is pretty obvious: there's nothing else even close to WD's "size" coming out this time of year. Assassin's Creed has to compete against CoD and the other annual/semi-annual releases that always hit in the fall, so while plenty of people buy it I'm sure a lot of them wait a few weeks/months due to the other releases that season taking up their time/paychecks. Meanwhile, WD released over two months away from any other AAA release (in either direction) and thus had our undivided attention.

Even if this game is pretty crap, I love seeing last gen sales dry up like this. Hopefully an even bigger spread for the NPD.

The mass market hype for this was real. It was always going to move next gen consoles because it was pushed as a next game game.

Really dumb move on MS's part announcing the price drop before Watch Dogs dropped. Basically telling anyone looking to upgrade in time for watch dogs that you should go with PS4.

Not a dumb move. MS needed to announce it ASAP, especially so that they could point at the announcment as a reason for low sales and on top of that to start building up hype. They didn't have any other choice, in my opinion.

So with WD doing so well, I can't imagine how well Destiny will do.

TF was hyped to high heaven and by MS, that didn't translate to the mainstream. Destiny and WD are both games being treated by the core as kind of meh, but they will translate very well to the mainstream. That's the main difference between them

Hehehehe. HAHAHAHA!

Activision has been repeatedly saying that Destiny is going to be the biggest new IP launch ever, and apparently their pre-orders are backing that up. And this is all before they begin what will be the biggest marketing campaign of the year for any game.

Of retail releases in the UK tracked by the source?

I wouldn't be surprised.

1. UK is big on consoles.
2. Most sources of retail PC games are NOT tracked by the likes of the NPD (amazon).
3. Most PC sales are digital.

Compare that to say, Germany and toss in digital sales, and I wouldn't be surprised to see it sell as well as the PS4 version.

Well, actually I don't know, PC gamers don't uusally tend to flock to AAA releases as much as console gamers, so who knows.

It's probably not representative but everyone playing games I know, knows about Watch_Dogs but only few know about Destiny.

uhh yeah that is not representative, but for my own "evidence", every xbox360 owner I knew bought a ps4 for destiny, period.

(while obviously factoring in the other details such as price, specs)

I got this game day 1 because I had nothing else to play on my PS4. I'm enjoying it a lot but the lack of other AAA games at the moment (I'm renting Wolfenstein) was a big push for me.

Only 31% for last gen consoles, I hope this is getting across to developers that cross-gen is dying quick.
Sadly they'll actually read it as 31% increase in sale's due to cross gen development which is hard to ignore.

I bought it for PS4. Wasn't in love with it at first, but I'm starting to dig it. It can be really quite fun to play as a stealthy action game.

This game is MUCH more fleshed out than Assassin's Creed was when it debuted.

I'm honestly really surprised. The game doesn't appeal to me at all.

I understand that you don't like it, but is impossible to look at the videos/images and don't see that we have a huge (in sales) game and franchise here

Borderlands The Pre Bomba is gonna tank so hard without PS4/XB1 versions.

I'm surprised at the Watch Dogs week one sell through overall.

Really enjoying it so far, especially the online.Deserves to do well just needs some polish and added features in the sequel.

I just checked and saw that it's a full price game ($60). I don't know why but I thought it was a $40 game. But i'm not sure that it'd really stand a chance even if it had a current gen release. All the attention seems to be on Destiny. And the sales of Watch_Dogs must've made Activision and Bungie even more confident in how well it's going to do.

no, it's not. anecdotal and whatnot but every single one of my friends are excited for it, and they're not the "core" (ie. don't visit forums and such). Every streamer I follow is exited for it too. You can also bet your butt that the beta will be huge and will spread word more than anything. That will be the game's testing grounds, and I have the feeling the majority will enjoy it.

press relase:

ALL EYES ON WATCH DOGS™:
NEW INDUSTRY SALES RECORD
FOR LAUNCH OF A NEW IP

Most successful launch title ever for Ubisoft® following phenomenal first week sales

COPENHAGEN - June 3, 2014 – Today, Ubisoft® announced ongoing record sales for Watch Dogs, which has sold-through more than 4 million copies in its first week, positioning it as the best-selling new IP at launch across the video game industry*. Having already broken sales records in the first 24 hours following its release, Watch Dogs is now the company’s best-selling game ever in week one**.

“With such strong sales momentum and positive feedback from gamers, Watch Dogs has positioned itself as the must-have game of the moment” said Geoffroy Sardin, senior vice president of sales and marketing, Ubisoft. “We’re really proud of this achievement, and are confident that the Watch Dogs brand has a promising future.”

The launch of Watch Dogs on consoles and PC was accompanied by the release of a free companion app, ctOS Mobile. The app allows gamers to connect with the Watch Dogs universe from anywhere, at any time, and is designed to enable revolutionary Duel-screen gameplay, or even to be enjoyed as a standalone experience without the main game. ctOS Mobile has already been downloaded and played by more than one million people**. Watch Dogs will also be released on the Wii U™ system from Nintendo in Fall 2014.

Watch Dogs is set in Chicago and lets players become Aiden Pearce, a brilliant hacker seeking justice following a violent family tragedy. Pearce hacks into Chicago’s Central Operating System (ctOS), which controls the city’s infrastructure (security cameras, traffic lights, public transportation and more) as well as key data on the city’s residents. The game uses the all-new Disrupt game engine to deliver stunning visuals and an incredibly immersive world.

I agree. I'd say by early next year if you're planning on making a PS4/Xb1 game don't even THINK of making it cross gen unless you're an indie developer. It seems people are moving on the the current systems. Now it's time to push that userbase from the PS3/360 into the current gen.

By this time next year I don't expect to see any Cross Gen titles.

Destiny will do the same. The partnership paid off big time.

Exactly. Destiny will be HUGE for the Playstation brand. Sony made a very smart investment continuing it's relationship with Ubisoft and then partnering with Activision for Destiny.

No doubt AC Unity will have a huge marketing push on PS4 after this.

I think now Sony would be wise to get a partnership with WB for MKX and Batman Arkham Knight. So should also buddy up with EA and try to get a deal with their new Star Wars game as well.

Sorry for the double post lol

Except Watch_Dogs isn't a re-skinned AC.

From my experience It really feels like AC. The missions and progression of the game are exactly or almost the same. Story and timeline differ not much else. Nonetheless good for Ubi they have a money making formula now like EA and Activision.

I'm surprised there isn't a new thread about this from the press release ^

This also implies that Titanfall sold less than 4 million in its first week if that's surprising to anyone

I'm honestly really surprised. The game doesn't appeal to me at all.

Yea I don't get it myself, I don't see what the insane appeal for this that would make everyone go out and buy it day1. Gameplay, graphics not feeling it. My mind is a blank. . .

Titanfall sold 925,000 in 3 weeks in the US. So assuming other territories account for at least half that, you're probably looking at roughly 1.4m or more world wide in 3 weeks.

Unless TF sold 450k in the UK in the first three weeks, I doubt that. The US and UK is pretty much the only places it solde well.

I think Sony does have Batman. MS got MK (I think, at least that's the box they showed)

As for Destiny, it's going to be huge. I'm excited but my more casual friends are iver the moon. The whole Halo + COD thing is getting around (creators of Halo, publishers of CoD).

I feel Destiny is in the same situation as WD, the core is confused thinking their lack of enthusiam extends to the mainstream

Deserved I think, really enjoying the game, and have no major issues with anything I've come across at all. Only 'slight' issues are really picky things like not being able to jump or melee unless a prompt exists. That I found silly in an open world game.
