Watch_Dogs downgradeaton confirmed

I think you nailed it. What happened to the stormy, fall time (low light on the horizon), gungy Dystopian Chicago of the future?

Half expecting him to run a GTA triathlon and go surfing...

Yep. Art direction must have changed hands or went blind during the course of development. They could still fix it and they should, it's bad.

How is such a downgrade possible? What did they show? The PC version? If that is the PC version, why couldn't the PS4 handle it?

So many questions....

the lightning looks ok upclose.

That FoV in the first gif, that's disgusting.

Haven't really been following Watchdogs. Did they ever fix the animation for breaking into vehicles? They originally had the elbowing of the window then pulling the handle to get in.

If you intend to come back with anything I would edit that post and be as vague as possible in regards to your relation to your source. Purely for their job safety.

I am sorry if that could endanger their job. I didn't think that console parity had anything to with their NDA.

NeoGAF. Still surprised that current gen games look like current gen games.

Especially so early in the cycle, I am still surprise by some people' reactions.

Guys, stop acting like drama queens! That is clearly the 3DS version.

Even in a hyperbolic post, 3DS is not even capable of getting the lowest of Watch_Dogs capacity. This is clearly PS Vita footage. It is its first "Killer App".

I don't get why GAF is so hung up on visuals... -.-'

Gameplay and art direction are what's essential, folks.

NDA covers more than you think. The main concern is bad press. Let's say you come back with a quote from a team member saying "Yeah, we had to delay and completely scale back the IQ across the board to bridge the gap for legacy gen systems." it contradicts what the current company statement is. If they find out who it is that said it, they'll get a talking to at the least. This is GAF, there's always someone on the team or in the company for the game you're currently discussing watching.

Nah son couldn't let you get away with that. Consider yourself wrong. One is running on full next gen assets. Food for thought.

Well I said comparable, not the same or better. Second Son has fantastic lightning and particle effects and an impressive draw distance but the animation, environment detail etc. all seem on a similar level to me from the footage I've seen. Infamous 3s graphics impress more overall but I certainly wouldn't agree there is anything like a generational gap between the two as some people are suggesting in this thread.

A 1500 post thread because of single terrible OP with a misleading gif that looked bad because of weird blown-out lighting. The other gifs posted in this thread are worlds apart.

Wow.

GAF makes me sad sometimes.

Edit: Make that an exactly 1500 post thread. Shot in the dark, lolz.

Edit 2: Forgot the difference between pages and posts, arg...
This guy. I agree with this guy.

Because the direction of the game doesn't allow for much artistic freedom and gameplay is directly affected by graphics. The two are intrinsically tied in today's games.

Edit: specifically when we moved from sprites to polygons graphics started to matter for gameplay.

Because people were pretty badly misled on what the game would offer. It's true that this is still an unfinished game, and that game play is important, but the entire reveal was one long bullshot at E3 if this turns out to be the case. If the graphics aren't as good as they were at E3, then what else has had a downgrade? Questing? World size? When something was worth $60 to me before, is it worth that now that it has had a significant downgrade?

EDIT: Also, game play and art direction are not the most important things to some people. If visuals are most important to someone, they are not incorrect, as it is their opinion on what makes the game good for them.

The Gamersyde trailer looks good to me, guys. Not as good as before, but certainly nothing alarming.

The footage we saw from E3 last year was running on a pretty high-spec PC, as I recall. Are you guys really surprised that the console versions would look a little less impressive? Really?

I can't believe the magnitude of this downgrade. The game looks much much worse than the reveal. At first I was excited because I saw the release date and thought I'd get this for my birthday but there's no way in hell I'm paying $60 for this.

And so my PS4 software drought continues, Destiny can't come out soon enough...

The reveal trailers ridiculous visual's got me extremely hype. Was my favorite thing during E3 2012. Some people care about and appreciate excellent visuals.

Things GTA V, a open world game on Xbox 360 and PS3, does better visually than Watch Dogs on PS4:

Lighting
Shadows
Water and water physics
Car model damage threshold
Attention to detail for (bullet wounds, clothing being wet, sweating+clothing, character model damage)

Arguably better:
Animations
Car models

Things GTA V is worse at:
Character models
Textures
Framerate
Pop in
Draw Distance

The game looks fairly run-of-the-mill sandbox title. With the pretty graphics and physics it would have at least been visual eye candy. Now it just looks like the former.

To be fair though only recent sandbox that I genuinely liked was Sleeping Dogs, and that one was pretty and fun to play.

Except both of those actually hinge on the technical proficiency of the graphics/IQ. Especially for this game.

I agree tho a lot of the reactions are overblown; I'm not a graphics whore tho so there's that.

Debatable. You can't take the sprites from Space Invaders and put them in Metal Slug and still expect it to play like Metal Slug. Visual fidelity has always mattered to a degree, it's just increased by magnitudes since games are now aiming for such believable photo-realism.

Whether that photo-realism is boring or not is an entirely different matter, but to each their own.

Same thing that happened to lots of games. Trade show reveal that was never going to be possible on retail console hardware.

What they showed was up and running JUST fine on PC.

One look at the PS4 UE4 Elemental Demo was enough to see that PS4 wouldn't be able to handle stuff like that . And as things were at last E3 the game was even downgraded from 2012. (Just look at Eurogamer's article from last year)
once again, the PC gets the short end of the stick. The one platform truly capable of delivering is held back by the LCD and instead gets a few other effects on top of the LCD to as a "Sorry brah"

I mean as significant of a difference as there is, you'd think they'd at least get some kind of visual benefit as a trade off (Like Better AA. Which judging by the PS4 footage isn't the case. Still the usual temporal aliasing problems)

And yet you see infamous second son at E3 looking great, fastforward to today and it looks even better graphically and arguably one of the best looking games...

Sure, lets blame the hardware...

The daytime lighting/shadows + colors are clearly a downgrade. Everything looks low contrast and more blown out giving the game a stylized look whereas before it was going for a mix of more realistic lighting with a dramatic flair. The nighttime footage is also a downgrade in lighting + particles, but not as severe as the daytime footage. ALL of the footage looks lacking in the atmospheric wind + DOF that made the initial reveal so dynamic looking.

I'm still hoping it turns out well because I'm a fan of the concept and crime-action titles, but it's definitely not as visually intriguing anymore, and I'd argue that GTAV does more with its style than this footage did in terms of visual appeal.

You sure can blame the hardware. If they had originally designed effects which it couldn't handle on the scale they were aiming for. Then it's not possible.

SS is different because it's an exclusive(Plus, first party too and doesn't even have dynamic shadows, poor AA quality), it doesn't have to aim for 5-6 different platforms at once, with starting on PC as a base and then parring down as it goes and then ending up with a final base version designed around stuff like the PS4.

SS had the benefit of being developed for nothing but the PS4 straight from the get go once they stopped making it for the PS3

I thought the only confirmation we have is that the trailer that was released is next-gen not the gif from where this video is taken from, unless something changed.

Its the same b-roll footage that all the sites got. They played the game for an hour on PS4 so there's no reason to believe Ubi sent them back with PS3 footage.

Has it been confirmed if this new trailer is running on a next gen console? If so...wow. I mean it most likely has to be. Why would they release a last gen trailer for it? You
d think they'd want the best looking version in the trailer, and if this is it, then lol.

This always looked like AC with a futuristic paint job to me. I'm not surprised this happened given UBI and the recent AC games.
