Watch_Dogs downgradeaton confirmed

- Twitch Stream was promised so Ubi could answer questions
- When they discussed the graphics complaint they didn't answer the question, just side stepped it saying "trust the previews" and "ps4 graphics look good". Never answered whether they were downgraded
- All questions seemed to have been pre screened/fake, and were fairly boring questions so they could talk for 20 minutes over absolutely nothing.
- Moondizzle was a user who kept insulting NeoGAF. He called us NintendoGAF, MicrosoftGAF, and said we were all just jealous it looked good on ps4 or some shit. Point is he later suggested he was a member who was banned. We were all laughing at the stuff he posted since it basically revolved around him insulting GAF and him pleading Ubi to show gameplay so GAF could be proven wrong
-He called Nirolak looser idiot who was bought by MS. So then mods started posting money gifs and money related comments.

Thanks for the summary!

Moondizzle is quiet butthurt.

Man Ubisoft is letting this Watch Dogs thing spiraling out of control! At this point, I don't even think I'll even get Watch Dogs at all.

their messaging on this has been terrible. they hoped no one would notice. we did. now they hope no one will care and they continue ignoring it.

developers need to realize (and some have) that we are paying attention to this stuff, and that we don't like being shown one thing, and then being given another WITHOUT being warned. I mean, if they'd come out and said 'Unfortunately we had to make some cuts to the graphics in order to realize the complex open world and gameplay systems we wanted and hope to improve them in future games closer to the level of the early footage. We felt staying true to the openness and scale of the game was more important.' before showing us the footage, we might have been disappointed. we might have laughed... but we'd have moved on.

some might have disputed the answer, but the game could have been judged on its final merits. imagine if Bungie had refused to acknowledge dropping real time shadows from Halo 2's first footage to the final game?

you don't control your PR message by refusing to talk about the aspect of your product EVERYONE IS TALKING ABOUT.

doesn't change the fact that Ubisoft's first video of the game didn't represent the final product.

downgrade doesn't mean 'is bad graffix now'. it means, the graphics are not as good as we were originally let to believe. they could still be great.

Yes, but I think what he means is it would be a bit sad to whinge about Far Cry 3 visuals not being exactly like bullshots when they're pretty damn fantastic by all accounts.

I find it comical that Kotaku of all gaming sites hasn't posted an article talking about this. You would think the site with the founded principle of "if it's click-bait we post it" would have posted something about it by now.

Which leads me to believe Ubisoft has been asking sites to not post it. My evidence? Nirolak being paid.

It all makes sense now...

Relaxed Muscle cited Far Cry 3 as another example of when Ubisoft had done this. Which it is. Relaxed Muscle didn't say anything negative about Far Cry 3's graphics. I don't see anything in his post that you could mistake for 'whinging'. It seems to me like you've inferred a tone that wasn't there.

Did Raymond do the promo for Blacklist? Jokes aside, she is a pretty woman who's confident on camera, she seems like the obvious choice for promotion stuff, but I don't remember her being interviewed for it.

Now the game has emerged, I take it we'll see the guy with intense feeling towards his phone again. As stupid as it is, there is something about associating a game with the face of the project, for example, with how irritating Randy Pitchford is, I'd find it hard buying a Gearbox game at this point I think.

This x100. I do a lot of public communication to large groups of people for my a living. I am stunned that these large companies don't hire someone more competent at speaking in front of a camera. You don't have to be a model, but it helps to be put together and capable of connecting with an audience.

they showed nothing new. because... well, depends on what you want to believe. they didn't address the specific complaints either, because... well...

it certainly is looking more and more and more illogical to presume there haven't been downgrades. it would have been very simple for them to address them head on, if indeed the only reason people got the impression there were downgrades was because they cut together a trailer that somehow missed all the WOW that was actually still in the game.

if that was true, you'd say it, even if you didn't have footage to prove it (which, naturally you would have). they didn't. they just hid behind 'people that have played the game think it looks good!'.

because it's been downgraded. that's the logical conclusion.
Downgraded from the first reveal, yes. But not since the actual gameplay demos the year later.

Ubi should really start showing reveals that are within reasonable expectation.

I still think the game will look very good for a crossgen open world game on PS4

So in all seriousness, the game is slated to come out in May, meaning it's going gold in the next 30 days or so. So, that means it HAS to be in the last stages of polish. There is no way that they are going to rework all the lighting, textures or rain/wind physics between now and April.

So, how could there NOT be a clip of the finished game play that they could have had to stream? All it would have taken is a 2 minute actual game play clip, shown running on a PS4 or XboxOne that was a montage of some walking around, driving, explosions, day/night etc.

Of course the intelligent ones know that the E3 reveal was not the final product. We all know that companies make their products look better on TV. Fast food places do it, car makes do it even medical companies do it. Even if it was just pure bad luck that the clip released was the only 2 seconds of the game where every asset failed to load properly, then just move forward and give us some video of the other portions of the game. Or, if the game is really that bad then DON'T do a Twitch Q&A the next day because EVERYONE is going to be there looking for some footage.

Holding the session with canned answers and zero new game play makes the end users feel that you think we are a bunch of dummies. That we will just plop down our hard earned, dollars, euros, marks or quids on your game because it has a flashy piece of cover art. It's irritating to feel that corporate Ubisoft is just sitting in a board room laughing and telling marketing, "Oh Hell, Just send the intern out and plant some watchers in the stream and have them ask generic questions. These are gamers we are dealing with. Nerds in a basement. Fuck them."

I hope it does too. It is still, unfortunately, missing the elements that wowed me in the first place. Fortunately other games are doing similar environmental / atmospheric effects, but speaking purely personally, it's very disappointing to see the thing which made you go 'WOW' over a games visuals, not make it to the final product.

I'll probably still buy the game, and I'll probably still enjoy it... but it doesn't have the same atmosphere that original footage has, and that will hurt my enjoyment of the game. atmosphere is a huge part of what I look for in a game, and Watch_dogs used to have it in spades.

We can only hope that Ubi realises that this shit doesn't work anymore.

Oddly enough, there's no Kotaku preview on the game either.
And the sites that have previews (GS, GI, IGN, Joystiq, T3) don't mention the graphics at all. Something's up, folks.

thanks for the summary too

For me the stream was very underwhelming. The fact that the dodged most of the hard hitting questions and answer stuff like "what type of guns are there" only makes me suspect that they are trying really hard to change the subject.

I've already said it once and i'll say it again. I'll hold off on judging the game till it comes out. Nothing is final yet. Until Ubi says its gold then nothing can be definitive.

But from the video i've seen and that stream today from Ubi have me very worried about this new IP, also i'll give them props for pushing the game back to make sure everything works.

but...but we can trust them, the Q&A said so, plus the game has wind, wind!

Not sure I quite agree with that. The gameplay revealed at E3 seemed more impressive than what was shown here, but I suppose we will find out when more footage is released of this game...

Oh gosh lol, yes I can see how hard hitting some of the questions were

When I went to a QA for Saints Row 4, you wouldn't believe the weak questions thrown around from some press attending. I was shocked how little people wanted to dig into the game, presumably because the developers were in the room.

Far Cry 3 had super gorgeous graphics.

One of the best looking games ever made.

Don't make me post the screenshots.

I said FC3 because the E3 demo had a graphical quality that dissapeared once the game released (even on PC max settings).

Not because FC3 had bad graphics at all.

You can't really give them "props" for the delay, even if it was necessary. It killed lots of people's hype for the game. It was barely talked about aside from the controversy that popped up as a result of the latest trailer.

The downgrade might exist for Far Cry 3 PC, but it's not really anything to write home about, is my point. The video that always gets posted to illustrate it doesn't really show up the PC build at all. Basically a small number of assets are missing and others are re-arranged. I've played the PC build to death on a very high spec machine. The game is a looker and extremely close to what was shown.

Maybe they can't talk because embargo ?( or something similar ? )

Well the last time someone from a big site said something nasty about a big Ubi game was 1up before AC1 and they got cut off completely from future Ubisoft games because of it.

Its not hard to see why other sites might think twice. Especially now when most sites are surviving jumping between big AAA marketing budgets to marketing budget.

well yes it did kill the game hype wise. But would you rather it ship and be a broken mess like Battlefield 4?

Or for it to actually work and not crash and loss save files?

Yep. Gaming media is not going to bite certain hands that feed. Of that you can be sure.

I'd rather the game had the atmosphere of the one I was hyped for 2 years ago but that's basically a pipe dream at this point.

Really?

The E3 demo is much more detailed and rich in details and enviroments...

Well... ask the journalists then.

Don't know if it's worth the effort. Each journalist who attended the press event was seen driving away with a Ferrari, for whatever reason.

Seriously though, I'd think they've been told by Ubisoft, "guys, guys, the game's not done yet, all will be well come launch day!" Plus, all dem journalists read GAF, they read the damning comments on their sites, they read Twitter, hell, if they watched the trailer and didn't think it was a visual downgrade, then they need to get their eyes checked. I don't see the need to ask them to report on something that's going on in the "gaming scene", that's their job.

+1
it's best not to talk shit about FC3 when those screenshots a click away.

however; it is painful to look at gifs like below, having seen the recent footage.

So it's a minefield ?

Ok then .

i've learned in "that" game that you can still pass if you're crouched

I dunno about that. If they wrote a preview, you should be able to ask them, and they should be able to talk about, whatever they saw in that preview. That includes visuals, atmosphere, sound, VA quality, etc.

So the answer will be "it's still look good for a PS4 game" ?

PR footage for games very regularly cuts blood effects. that's one thing I would advise against thinking represents the final product. numerous games showed no blood in trailers and b rolls and what have you that had plenty. recently Tomb Raider DE was thought by some to have been censored for blood, based on press shots. naturally it hadn't been.

I get annoyed constantly by the blood spatter, body damage and bodily reactions to projectiles entering and exiting people not being anywhere near realistic in video games, films and telly programmes.

Every now and then you see researchers and directors doing things right but those times are very few and far between. Nowhere near enough limbs being blown off, nowhere near the right size of exit wounds and you don't get enough people thrown back with enough force after the projectile has hit.

Can somebody tell me happend in the last few hours? Why is everybody posting money gifs? Who is moondizzle?

Guy who accused Nirolak and gaf mods of selling out, he was sure that Ubisoft was gonna stream "amazing" gameplay to prove GAF wrong about the downgrade comments, then started actively begging Ubisoft to stream gameplay after awhile, became increasingly frustrated when it never happened, and had a mini-meltdown.

I'd rather the game had the atmosphere of the one I was hyped for 2 years ago but that's basically a pipe dream at this point.

I remember watching that in 2012 and thinking that graphics quality would be the baseline for next-gen console games. Oh how wrong I was...
