Will you buy the next Xbox hardware?

What you are saying applies only to BC. There will likely be no Xbox console game SKUs next gen for play anywhere to even be relevant as a program anymore. Everything new would automatically play anywhere by default as they are all PC SKUs anyway across console, handheld and PC. So all they need is PC mode and BC mode. If you slap a tag on BC titles and get rid of PC gamepass as a separate thing, then all the user will see is one mode, one gamepass and free MP

Just guessing based on rumors, but seems like the best way forward imo.
Exactly. After this thing launches, Play Anywhere will just be a BC program basically. They could still keep updating it by having it be a condition for old GP games that get added. The more they shore it up, the less their PC ecosystem will be trapped on the Magnus chip. A lot of games that were not PA get added to GP and suddenly I have a PC version. They could pick off old games in a few years as cheap GP fodder and get them updated to PA for cheap, assuming they are even interested in that in a few years.

As soon as Hi-Fi Rush went to PS5 I started taking out $100 a check. Got to $2k without even really noticing it a long time ago. I'm willing to entertain a premium device if it seems somewhat fair. Would be something new, and that sounds exciting. PC with training wheels is literally exactly what I want. They even used the word "curated." We should just wait and see what this even is.
I'm sure the word "curated" has a significant honest meaning, because MS has never used empty buzzwords before!

So have an old console AND build a PC when you can sell one and get the new Xbox that does the job of both?

It's not that hard to see that there is a market for this new thing. How big a market... remains to be seen.
It's a market that isn't directly compatible with the pricing and game access sensibilities of traditional console users, which is why I'm kind of shocked to see a notable amount of people willing to go over this route.
I guess it's not harming to see how it ends up, but just saying that you can already have a system that will do everything this device will do (bar BC, but then again, these are Xbox users that already own Series consoles) without the need to wait 2 years for whatever ultra expensive machine Microsoft will begin to sell that in absolutely no way will resemble the traditional Xbox experience of their old consoles.

I don't have a Xbox library so to me it's just a prebuild PC. I much rather build my own computer within my budget and the a upgrade path. As for the Xbox players that have a big library no to mention the gamertag the only hassle is to convince them to pay up for the premium and curated experience. Any console that have steam on it is a instant no for me. Not because steam is bad, is just that they are the better service and I'm not paying extra for Xbox branding.

RetroGamingUK RetroGamingUK bro can you add a pool option "Not decided yet" ?

At this point, being able to decide is difficult. Even though I don't like the direction taken by Microsoft at all, I still have a shit-ton of games on Xbox. So I need to see exactly where we are headed in terms of hardware, features and price to decide.

Basically, this is too soon for me.

This is exactly where I'm at. Current events make me not want to buy anything but I have so much legacy content that I might consider it for a spare room or something.

The dream would be they make CPUs with this in like 3 to 5 years.

Sony is literally making all the stuff you actually want (PS6 and PS6 Portable), and yet you still refuse to make the jump to PlayStation. Why are you guys like this?

What stupid name will they give it?
Xbox Series PC Console or XBOX Series Console PC?

So people will know straight away what it is and what it isn't by the name!

Just release a PC and stop with the xbox brand bullshit at this point...

Is the free multiplayer paywall included in the highest tier of gamepass?

What a joke and a travesty of a company... mismanaging all the IPs they currently own...

This thing will be north of 2000. It is an APU, with some zen cores attached to some rdna5 cores. Based on the leaks, there is nothing custom in the design, the only thing that would separate this from the components bought individually will be the keys pre installed in the tpm to make the security check for Xbox series games boot.

Microsoft will get a small audience of single digit million rubes to buy this based on the promises of it being the most powerful console. But I will eat my hat if the entire Xbox game library will just work without resorting to cloud streaming for a significant chunk of games.

If you want a PC cosplaying as a console then go ahead but don't fool yourself that this is a console in the traditional sense and don't be disappointed when the back compat promises fall in a heap.

I'm also doubtful about the free online play.

So pretty much what we expected, then -- a PC modified to play Xbox BC. That's cool. It's not for me, but it's a nice, albeit expensive option for hardcore Xbox fans who want next-gen hardware to call their own.

im sure there will need to be a "xbox" setting for games not he windows store. like we are starting see "Steam Deck" settings in pc games.

Might b cool. Probably not worth the price for me though. We'll see how the price vs performance comparison goes with the PS6.
Access to PlayStation, Xbox, and Steam is kind of sweet.

Interesting. Does it come with disc drive and remind me again how powerful is the Magnus GPU? Like 5080Rtx?

AMD making a GPU as powerful as a top-tier nVidia card is unheard of. I would temper that expectation and fully expect AI driven tech to make this thing reach 4K.

Are devs still dropping games on the Xbox PC store and abandoning them?

Abandoning is a harsh word.

They aren't so much as "abandoning" them, it's more that for play anywhere versions they need to keep the version control in lock-step with the xbox console version so that things like saves, co-op/multiplayer etc stay compatible across the two versions.

For obvious reasons, that absolutely sucks if you play on PC only.

But that is AMD's codename, right? Personally I think it should be simplye "Xbox PC"

I mean it is a Magnus and it is AMD. Most people know nothing about the codenames for these chipsets. How many people would you say know that the Switch 1 is an Nvidia Tegra? I'd say less than 5% of the ownership.

Honestly I don't get it either. If this same thing was happening to PS your out of your mind if you think I'm buying some $1500+ device and being invested in that ecosystem any longer than I have to. Especially when it's clearly on shaky ground as it is. I'd happily move over to Xbox and slowly purchase any game I'm missing back and I guarantee I end up not even coming close to spending $1500.

Yeah, I get that. I'm just making sure I understand the origin of the name. I'd definitely prefer it over some of their naming schemes of the past.

So it's just a matter of delaying updates until the console version gets updated?

I may have misunderstood the original complaints. I thought they were being neglected after release.

Yeah great 4d chess moves by MS.. all according to plan.

This is sarcasm right ? Right ? Padame.gif

Why would it? I mean, obviously, if MS did not fuck up Xbone generation, they would happily keep Xbox closed. But they DID fuck it up, Spencer said long time ago that this was the gen to win and they didn't, and so they figured that to compete, they should embrace openness of a PC. And so they eventually did.

Yes, but the complaints and the perception of abandonment that it gives off are completely correct/valid.

In many cases you'll see the same games getting patched on other storefronts such as steam/gog/epic/etc (sometimes to correct critical PC specific issues) and then it taking months for the windows store version to get updated.

It's something they needed to address years ago but they've failed to do so because of the fact that it would mean abandoning play anywhere for many of the games that have been impacted by it.

There probably won't be any Next Gen console games... but given dev lifecycles there might be Non PC Console (Series S/X) games released after this thing launches.
True. And those will fall under BC and treated as such. If it's not on play anywhere and you already own it, it's BC mode. GTA 6 will be the Series X version if no PC version is available by then. Though I fully expect the series X/S version to not be available for purchase on Magnus if a PC version is available as well. That would fit right into their Smart Delivery strategy.

I don't think so. It sounds like you would need to switch between Xbox mode and Windows mode, which means that the game would still be available on the storefront of the Xbox mode.
Look up how the Wii U handled Wii backwards compatibility, because this thing sounds exactly like it.

If I understand Microsoft's naming conventions correctly, they'll call it "Xbox Windows And Native Kernel", which will be shortened to XWANK. They will use this nomenclature unironically.

Reading the details, seems either their legal Eagles have solved their licensing issues around a PC running console titles, or Jezebel is blowing an insane amount of smoke out of his ass.
  • Full fat Windows
  • No paid multiplayer
  • Full Series X-style BC
  • RTX 5080 performance
  • Discrete NPU
  • $1000
That would eat most per-built gaming PCs for breakfast and cost less than half while offering the full fat experience. Discord and RV There Yet with your buddies? No problem. Run full fat Cyberpunk with path tracing? Easy. Play my OG Xbox Jade Empire for the 211th time? No sweat. Play Halo MCC multiplayer on my Xbox with no paid online? Absolutely.

They bring that experience to market for $1000 and I'm in day one no questions asked.

If that's the route they go, then I agree. Wii U and Wii had a clean line drawn for BC. But I think the whole goal here is to erase all these lines.

I think there will be just be one mode/app for anything Xbox. The mode switching is to get to other stores outside of the Xbox ecosystem.

BC being as grey as it is, I expect some devs will exercise their right to opt-out.
