[Wccftech] PlayStation Handheld to Feature AI Upscaling, 16 GB LPDDR5X RAM, and 16 MB MALL to Offset Lower Memory Bandwidth Compared to Base PS5

Kepler isn't saying it's 1/3rd of the GPU. He says it has 1/3 of the memory bandwidth (which would be about 150 MB/sec)
Well If that machine has to be released in the short term, has to accommodate silicon space for AI cores and has to have a mass market appeal price I don't see it being more that twice the SW2 in portable mode. 2 SW2 duck taped together is already a very generous assumption for a 2026-27 device. If it ever has a docked mode is irrelevant to the power conversation because the point would be to be able to run PS5 games on the go.

It's not going to be cheap. I'd say it's going to be at least $599.

Keep in mind in comparison to the Switch 2, I would not expect it to include a dock or detachable controllers. And be Adorably All Digital. Cost comparison would be more like the Deck.

So essentially ps6 era will also be ps5. Hopefully development cost won't go up limiting AAA games being made.

Most important factor will be cost vs ps6 as it will determine target market.

How do we know it is a PC handheld based on the hardware described?
I was asking myself this same question. Maybe he saw something else in your post that we didn't see 🤷🏿‍♂️ but I wouldn't bank on his logic as it holds no past proof of Sony ever thinking about making a PC only handheld lol.

I know better? I don't know a thing. If Sony has reversed course on this live service mess then I'll be overjoyed, but I don't know that they have. How do you know? Again, what has changed? I'm asking questions, not making statements.

You can tell by the cancelations. Plus why they are and (more importantly) aren't promoting on their State of Plays lately.

Of course we don't literally "know", but a good educated assumptions can be made here.

I don't know a thing.

If this ps portable plays all ps4 and ps5 and ps6 psn digital games (or most of it) 1080p 60fps (ps4 and ps5) and 30fps ps6 OFFLINE, I will buy it immediately!!! Heck I'm down with new cartridge for physical as well.

It's a handheld that runs PS5 games, not PS6 games.
If it runs PS6 games, it will be the same way Portal does.
You'll probably be right, but it's important to note that it doesn't have to be this way. Technically, it's absolutely possible to design a hardware-software-ecosystem where such two platforms do share the same software catalogue. All it takes for it is software to be highly scalable and designed around the limitations. Unfortunately, no platform holder wants to enforce strict quality standards on publishers these days, which would be needed for that to become realistic.

About 4 million.

The Portal has sold just over 2 million.

A dedicated PS handheld that has access to the PS library from day one would probably sell a lot more.

Sony would be extremely lucky to sell more than 15-20 millions of a 600 bucks, or more, console which main appeal in 2027 would be playing the games of their 2020 home console.

The alternative, as I said, would be playing PS6 games natively; but I don't believe that's possible unless the PS6 is a total gimp of a machine.

Yes, because that's the mess Jim created. It takes YEARS to put a brand like Playstation in the wrong direction.
Exactly this. This year we are witnessing the results of Jim Ryan decisions he took in 2019. GAAS failures, PC flops, no diverse AA games. But really Hulst is just doing the same, even worse. And Ryan wasn't fired, he was just too old.

This is probably mainly for japan but should also succeed WW if handled correctly.

Let's see how it goes abd what this costs. £599 to £699 would be my guess.

If this rumour is true and its utilising the same chipset as ps6, I would find it highly unlikely that you wouldn't be able to play PS6 games natively albeit lower spec'ed

Are you talking about cancelation of those GAAS games before we even got to see what they looked like? That's not Jim's fault.

If he was still around we would have gotten them. Jim's idea was smart, those GAAS games were meant to fill the gap between those single player games we all love that takes so long to develop and also to add a constant stream of revenue.

What puzzles me is the hate towards GAAS games but still hop on and play them behind closed doors.

Fair, but 3~3.5 TF at 599 eurodólares is still a bargain.

Dammit! I knew this nonsense was coming the moment I saw the technology being used for half baked PC ports.
This just might kill my desire for the device if I can't turn it off because I don't do fake frames on PC and I'm not about to start on a Sony Handheld.

We won't know the full thrust of Jim's powers until the year 2027 to be honest. The main thing he has done though is destroy Jim's GAAS mega push.

But that's why Jim's idea was HORRIBLE lol. Most of those GAAS games would have flopped super hard. I still think TLOU Online game would have been good, but that's it. Most of his push into GAAS was a place to set money on fire. Their profit margin dropped to 6% or so. Jim was bad man.

There is one major reason this is not a good move. There is no winning solution to the docking of the device. There is no need for a hybrid console when there is a base console.

Making it possible to dock the device would negate the need to own a PS6, creating a XSS situation where some users never buy a PS6 and the handheld collects dust.

Removing docking all together makes this a sub-par device compared to market leaders.

This can never have the mass market appeal of a Switch or Steam deck if it cannot be docked to a TV screen. If it can it will be XSS all over again where early adopters buy the cheaper model and then get bored with it after a few years because their hearts have no pride in ownership as they didn't buy the flagship, and then they slowly start to drop out of the hobby. It will also split development just like XSS and create pipeline problems for Sony. 3rd party problems if they enforce parity. There is a reason MS is in this state and the XSS is a big part of that reason. Don't wave this off. You will be judged by your worst product not your best one.

Portal 2 is a better move. It has almost all the benefits with no drawbacks. In the above scenario the PS6 goes down Xbox route next gen. Sony the time to think better of this error is right now. A house divided.... Don't let Nintendo do this to you Sony. Your trendchasing has hurt you bad with Concord but this is worse. You are falling for a trap.

This is the most made-up problem I have ever seen.

If it runs PS6 games, it will be the same way Portal does.

This is the simplest and most expected explanation.

The Xbox S was not a success and Sony already said at the time that a stripped-down version of the console was not a good idea and the developers complained publicly.

For the PS5 generation, perhaps a portable device that runs PS5 games natively will have the same effect that Kinect had for the X360.
This would make the PS6 essentially irrelevant because devs will code their game to PS5, not PS6. We'd get the 2020-2022 cross-gen that slowed PS5 adoption... except the entire generation.
