[Wccftech] PlayStation Handheld to Feature AI Upscaling, 16 GB LPDDR5X RAM, and 16 MB MALL to Offset Lower Memory Bandwidth Compared to Base PS5

I'd argue that hardware does not determine if it is a PC/Console, it is the software.

PC=Windows.

Macs/Linux devices aren't considered as PC's either.

A PC is just short for Personal Computer.

The OS can be Windows, Linux etc. You can even run Windows on a Mac PC.

The above picture was just smart marketing from Apple. Regardless of what they say, a Mac is still by definition a PC.

Random question, where did the green rat name come from. Why rats? I mean I get "Sony Pony"... but why rat?

They should forget about handheld and actually support their system they made that's already out. VR.

PSVR is dead.

is this supposed to be a dedicated handheld? even nintendo was smart enough to combine their handheld and home console into one

Dedicated. Presumably there'll be a PS6 home console too. Also presumably the handheld will be Adorably All Digital.

Nah, it will probably play PS4, PS5, cross-gen games (with PS6, ie PS5) and stream full on PS6 titles.

We can expect 3-4 years of cross-gen at a minimum so a 2028 launch for PS6 means game support till at least 2031-2032.

They have shit first party output this gen. I don't care about their profits/bank. They can barely support one platform, now imagine 2.
If you're worried about games being spliced between console and handheld you don't have to worry.

Since Sony released vita, psvr1 and psvr2 they release hardly any dedicated first party games. A Sony handheld will just play console ports and any exclusive games will come 99% from third parties.

They even shut down their new neon koi mobile studio.

Waiting for X chuds to say this doesn't play steam or 360 games. L for Sony.
Haha but really, if you wanted a handheld... Why would you get the Sony one if it only plays PS games (unconfirmed). When the ROG Ally Xbox thingy-majiggy would play Xbox, Steam and all other PC libraries including PS games on Steam?

That's a question Sony's going to have to answer, yes. Especially if they continue to put their first party games on PC.

PC means personal computer, and existed before Windows.

Obviously PCs with Unix/Linux (including MacOs) are PCs too.

If they'd require Windows to be a PC, then most PC handhelds wouldn't be PC handhelds.

portal proves there is huge demand for a handheld, but I think they are better off just improving the portal with a oled screen, making it smaller and lighter, vastly improving latency and image quality. If they can do it on pc with Remote Desktop on vr, I'm sure Sony can figure it out.

Curious if this is under Cerny, or a different internal team while Cerny preps for the PS6. Dude knows his stuff, no question, and squeezing a proper next-gen experience into a handheld is a tall order is a problem I'd love to see his take on.

In that case the definition becomes so broad it's redundant. Even a calculator could be called a PC. As it is a computer that you use.

TV's and Hi-Tech fridges could be another example of a PC if we were to call anything with computer parts a PC.

I'm going say Sony will make a handheld but it will be a PC handheld and not a PlayStation.
There is like a 0% chance that the PlayStation handheld is a PC handheld. It wouldn't make any sense at all for their strategy.

The hardware mentioned in the OP is a PC handheld.

A different question is if Sony will allow users to optionally install there other OS as could be SteamOS or Windows. Or if they'll use the open source Proton to run Windows games on their own OS, as could be the ones they'll sell in their upcoming PC PSN store.
It's no more or less of a PC than the PS5 is and the PS6 will be.

I'd assume to access the other half of PlayStation games. They got like what, less than 20 games on pc?

That said, I like my Portal and Steam Deck combo. I think the windows handhelds will continue to suck.

If only we didn't hit the bottleneck of not being able to shrink transistors anymore.

The market decided they prefer to play games in front of a TV than to play in an arcade. And given the choice to be able to not tethered to a TV is also an improvement. But what we want is right now mashing against the reality that processing power isn't getting cheaper anymore. Do you think Nintendo WANTED to sell an expensive portable? They had no choice, it is what is available today.

Just like there was zero percent chance playstation games would go to PC? 😵‍💫

What else is there if not consoles, Mac and Linux?

PC is not tied to any single operating system or company. My main PC that I'm using right now is Linux. Consoles are obviously tied to the company that made them. I built this PC myself and installed Arch Linux. Installing Windows doesn't make it any more of a PC.

The Portal turned out to be a nice surprise so naturally it'll be interesting to see what they can put together with this if it ever sees the light of day. At the risk of triggering a million "it'll never happen" replies I wish there'd be a way to put Steam on it.

Does ROG Ally play your entire PS library? (Assuming the PS Portable plays PS5/PS4 games....which would probably mean it plays games from even older consoles) There's your answer......

Why assume a person has built up Xbox, Steam, etc libraries?

tbh dropping a ps6 which is basically a better ps5 pro and a handheld ps6 which is equivalent to a regular ps5 or slghtly under in 1-2 years for $499/$549 is feasible, especially in 2027.

tbh they could also release a new version of the portal, called the PORTALble, for like $399 and have it basically run ps1-ps4 games they have already released/re released and update the portal and portable to stream ps5 games in 1080p from an owned library. So technically ps5 version of gta vi on the go, while being able to download most ps4 versions of ps5 games. That can also work, their straight streaming from the cloud on portal is better than the remote play sometimes.

I appreciate it because it is coming from the heart, no A.I. generated shit

Psp had a very good launch game and early games like GTA liberty city and FF Crisis core and later MH and killzone psp. I hope the new PSP will have very good games. But I'm very interested. i hope it still works like Portal which can integrate with Ps6.

Mark Cerny is 100% working on this. He worked on both the PS Vita and PS4 at the same time.
Yes, PS Vita was the first console out of the Sony and Cerny collaborations.
