While it personally isn't an issue for me swapping games I don't want to redownload to my 6tb hard drive, you're a fanboy if you can't accept the fact that MS made a bad bet. They thought this format would remain competitive with the NVME drives popular now, and that the price wouldn't fall out of the NVME market.

Also note that I don't know jack shit about the technical difference between the two formats. I've heard the type MS went with is superior for things like high end digital cameras, but I don't know how.

2tbs are like 100ish now, and 1tb are 50-70, we're entering 2012 HDD prices now and it's only a matter of time before it goes into free fall price wise.

Really does. WD Xbox 1TB is only $60-ish off their standard PS5 price. Can only imagine what prices would be if Seagate had competition out of the gate, but I think pricing wouldn’t be nearly as controversial right now had that been the case.

Microsoft should just make Xbox compatible with a minimum speed PCIe spec and just let people pop NVME drives into an enclosure. Locking compatibility to a single model has made the current aftermarket expansion approach just as expensive as the Seagate option.

Not having the software support for SSD expansion at launch is separate from their choice of standard storage medium.

At launch there weren't many PCIe 4 SSD available, if any. Sony obviously didn't feel confident releasing the product without proper testing. They basically come out at the same time. That was the choice though. Proprietary device now or PC standard in the long run?

You know I've had both consoles since near launch, never expanded either storage and I've not ran into any issues yet.

I’ve got 11 terabytes of games installed on my XSX. Internal, expansion card, and a regular external drive. I basically download everything,

Vita comparison only because both have proprietary storage options, certainly not directly comparable. Later Vita systems did come with 1GB of on board storage but I’m pretty sure you couldn’t access both it and a memory card once you added one lol. You could connect Vita to a PC and use it as external storage but clearly doesn’t work like a connected drive an XSX or PS5.

I don't think MS wants end-users opening the box at all. You could do it, but it wasn't officially supported.

MS never released an official shell for off the shelf drives in the 360 days, they might never do it here either. They obviously prefer the proprietary method of expansion storage.

At any rate, $40 is $40, it is nice to see a price cut.

The replacement NVMe has to be a very specific model of Western Digital 2230 that is not sold to the public. It is an OEM part that is also used in some Surface tablets as well. You can find refurbs and used ones on ebay. Here is a link one:

Pleae note the SN560 is the updated version of the SN530; both are originally removed from Xbox machines. Write Speed - 2000 MB/s (~2300 MB/s for SN560). It is your responsibility to ensure this works with your system.

I wasn't a big fan of the ps5 solution but ms stayed with overpriced storage for way too long, they suck here and hopefully this is a step in the right direction.

Right, I completely forgot about it. You could use the chunky 3.5" ones as well. But arguably, it's different since you needed extra hardware, and it wasn't built into the system.

PSP as well had their proprietary card; the only difference is that Memory Sticks were not created only for that device and for that reason they could be had for cheaper. Digital games were also way less important.

I’ve been eyeing one of those for my Steam Deck. Sucks those won't work in Xbox. I'm guessing there is something in the controller for the WD drives that XSX is looking for.

Greedy MS! Thanks to those of us who have used GP conversion loophole, the £500 a year I've saved that I normally spent on games has paid for my SX, SS and PS5. Yes I also got a free Elite 2 controller and free games thanks to Rewards. More than enough to offset the price of the expansion cards.

Btw anyone in the UK can get a 1TB expansion card from CEX with a 2 year warranty for £150.
