Sounds like another fundamentalist that won't budge on contraception and is actually against female rights. Oh boy.

You were expecting a pope that goes: "Here are some condoms, go nuts."

Actually, we're fine. As an American, I feel it is our duty to the world to nuke God if Ratzinger pulls any funny business. I'm sure the Russians will GLADLY jump on board with this plan, too.

Just watched some TV here.

Ratzinger is known as "the panzer cardinal". He is anti-gay, he won't allow women to church etc.

For 24 years he was "the Guardian of Faith" (there is an official title but I can't find it) always fighting for its purity.

There's an anecdote that whenever John Paul II had to make some decision (sign some important document) he said "I wonder what Joseph [Ratzinger] thinks about it".

I'm from central Poland - Lodz, 100km from Warsaw.
Slaskie sounds perfectly good BTW :)

We'll see a black pope in the year 5400.

It would have been nice to see the Nigerian Cardinal.....but I think that Ratzinger will do a fine job...plus as he is 78, I am sure we will watching this all unfold again in 5 years.

Are you serious?!

Sorry guys, I should have RTFT first.

I heard them say on TV that he was asked to join the Nazi youth party...

it didnt say he actually did

:lol at pics so far btw. If I'd of been on at the time, I'd of had Palpatine on the mind thanks to the new SW pics too. Palpatine pic overload and new Pope in the same day? Too much of a coincidence. I sense something.... elsewhere, elusive.

Number of threads about Rwanda started by Dan = 0.
For the record, I was referring to the mainstream media attention on just this waiting process, since it was television coverage being discussed in the thread at that point. I couldn't care less what GAF discusses.

Not sure what my thread creation history regarding Rwanda has to do with that. My interest in the atrocities in Africa isn't centered around GAF, that's for sure.

Thanks a lot for posting a pic of what I assume is a scene from the next Star Wars flick which I have made a point to avoid the trailers for. Way to kill the surprise of what looks like a key "unveiling" scene. : /

The unveiling scene doesn't happen with him taking off his hood. It's cooler than that :D

So don't worry that ain't it.

I think the Nazi thing is overblown, but as a non-Catholic who lives in this world and understands the pope's potential influence, I think this blows.

1) The conservatism -- it's not my church, never will be, but I see some of the church's policies as damaging (i.e: condemning birth control in AIDS-stricken countries -- one of the cardinals considered a contender had talked about how if illicit sex is going to happen, withouth a condom -- if one of the partners has AIDS -- is a violation of the sixth commandment. (Thou shalt not kill)

2) The Euro-ness. I was hoping for a Pope from Africa or South America. I figure some of these folks are more intimately familiar with poverty and may have been stronger forces in the fight against third-world poverty. It's not something the pope can fix on his own, but it's something he can influence.

Of course, that's just my non-Catholic perspective. Who knows, maybe God spoke to the cardinals and told them that this was the way...

EDIT: OMG! Palpatine's in Ep. 3!! :p

I take it you've seen the trailers? So you're positive that that pic isn't from the film? I guess it's a photoshop, then, though that's an awful lot of trouble to go through. I'm hoping you're right and that it's not from the flick. Thanks. :)

I know who the pope will be after this one buys the farm.

These Cardinals so shamelessly lifted the storyline from an unexpected source...

Longtime fan favorite pope cashes out, and a new pope comes in, from a country that was formerly an evil world power. However, this new pope is already aged and not prepared to go the distance. So when he goes out, the next pope will be the largest icon ever.

Where did they steal this from? It's real simple...

So when this new pope goes down, WHATCHA GONNA DO, BROTHER

It is from the film. But I'm absolutely positive that it doesn't represent any revelation/transition or spoiler in any way. In fact, I'm pretty sure I know what other area of the movie its from. I won't say anything more about it, but don't worry.

There are other scans which came from the same magazine as that picture which are far far worse in terms of spoilers.

Retard. You had to go to the Hitler youth if you were born in germany. Later he deserted from the nazi army (he was meant to be death-punished for that, but the Allies saved him). So he's pretty anti-nazi.

Yeah, but what I'm seeing is that I've never seen a pic of Sidious/Palpatine where he looked like that, so for me that's a spoiler. I've always assumed that Sidious was Palpatine, but not that he was deformed in any way as he is in that pic.

Bookerman, if I didn't know (and couldn't have known) that Sidious' face would look the way it does in that pic, then I'd consider that a spoiler. There was no way I would have guessed that he'd have a mangled visage.

Wow, we went from a Polish pope to someone who was a former Hitler Youth... talk about a 180...

The young were automatically enlisted in Hitler's youth. Ratzinger avoided the organization's meetings, and continued to oppose the direction Hitler was taking the country when he fled the military. His relationship with the allies, after the war, was good, and he was a fairly progressive individual early on.

EDIT: I've been beaten many times to this point. My apologies; In the future, I will read threads in their entirety to avoid this.

Naw, it's okay, some people need it beaten over their heads ten times before it sinks in.

Don't you worry a bit. Usually youngsters are stupid and don't know shit about history.

I never liked the old Pope...I considered him too old-fashioned for the current times...But this one makes him seem like an angel.
At least when looking at Wojtyla's face, you didn't see the face of the evil.

Agree, that's really cool. Imagine that the next time something like this happens (pope dies) we will be well over 40, close to 50 even :O

Gives you some thinking material...

this new guy is already 78 years old. Don't worry, we'll be doing this all over again in about 5 years, 10 tops.

Yeah, I overlooked this :/

Wojtyla was like 58 (?) when they've chosen him. 20 years younger than the new one.

Ratzinger is really old, he won't make it through 2010.

Heh, next-next-gen Pope in 6 years? :lol

Come on, I didn't like him first either, but give a guy who deserted from the Wehrmacht which would normally have cost him his live some respect.

Yeah. But it's so damn incredible to imagine living people be dead - maybe tomorrow (don't think so though).

Don't think about it now. Try to spend some quality time with your grandpa, show him that he is still needed. Old people often feel as being totally useless and not necessary.
