So when a Pope picks his new name, is it similar to rappers or internet forum members choosing new monikers? Because Benedict XVI sounds fairly bad-ass.

Yeah, I overlooked this :/

Wojtyla was like 58 (?) when they've chosen him. 20 years younger than the new one.

Ratzinger is really old, he won't make it through 2010.

Heh, next-next-gen Pope in 6 years? :lol

The generations just get shorter and shorter ;_;
Hopefully the Church supports this current pope well into the new pope's reign.

Kinda like weekend at bernies.

It's a tradition dating back to Saint Peter:
Peter first declares that Jesus is the promised Messiah and son of God. Jesus replied that "flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. And I also say to you that you are Peter [meaning "pebble; piece of rock"] and on this rock I will build My church."

List of Popes (excluding Anti-Popes):

1. St. Peter 32-67
2. St. Linus 67-76
3. St. Anacletus (Cletus) 76-88
4. St. Clement I 88-97
5. St. Evaristus 97-105
6. St. Alexander I 105-115
7. St. Sixtus I -- also called Xystus I 115-125
8. St. Telesphorus 125-136
9. St. Hyginus 136-140
10. St. Pius I 140-155

...

255. Gregory XVI 1831-1846
256. Ven. Pius IX 1846-1878
257. Leo XIII 1878-1903
258. St. Pius X 1903-1914
259. Benedict XV 1914-1922
260. Pius XI 1922-1939
261. Pius XII 1939-1958
262. John XXIII 1958-1963
263. Paul VI 1963-1978
264. John Paul I 1978-1978
265. John Paul II 1978-2005
264. Benedict XVI 2005- (May he reign 100 years)

Please explain the concept of "Anti-Popes" to me. It sounds quite exciting.

My english is too damn weak for such a task.
Follow this wiki link to learn everything about anti-popes:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antipope

An antipope is one whose claim to being Pope is the result of a disputed or contested election. These antipopes were usually in opposition to a specific person chosen by the papal electors (since the Middle Ages, the college of cardinals). Some self-appointed leaders of smaller churches are also called "antipopes."

Damn boring, nothing mystical/ satanic about them.

Lucian Pulvermacher aka Pius XIII, the latest anti-pope from Montana (!), USA.

during the great schism, there were three popes (one in Rome, one in southern France - essentially a puppet for the French king, and another one in Pisa). The Roman Catholics probably use the term "antipope" to reference this particularly intriguing period of history.

Edit: There were apparently a lot more Anti-Popes than this, but it is still a very interesting example of how screwed up the Catholic Church power structure was under French influence in the middle ages.

The new evil NAZI pope / anti-pope: RATzinger, once part of the hitler
youth, has been appointed POPE BENEDICT XVI - and he *may* well (might)
be THE LAST POPE, who is known as the False Prophet in Revelations -
and he (the false prophet) will be the evil little satanic bastard that
leads the world into worshiping the satanic ANTICHRIST.

YEAH!

Ya, the bells are ringing here as well. Ratziger or the Italian guy?

Agree, that's really cool. Imagine that the next time something like this happens (pope dies) we will be well over 40, close to 50 even :O

Gives you some thinking material...
Well, not necessarily. Most popes haven't lasted nearly as long as this last one.

I think all young priests pick this out far in advance. They write it down in their secret diaries in their pope chest.

According to st. malachy's 12th century list predicting future popes we are now only one pope away from the coming of the antichrist!

So i did some research on these prophecies.....heres what I found:

http://www.catholic-pages.com/grabbag/malachy.asp

Scroll down to the table listing all the prophecies and the corresponding popes. Heres the current one:
"Gloria olivæ - The Benedictine order traditionally said this Pope would come from their order."

Seeing as how the new pope picked his name to be Benedict XVI, this is a bit creepy.

Heres another version of the same prophecy in a web page written before today, it seems, as it still states Pope John Paul II is still alive. http://www.jpdawson.com/lastpope.html

Pope ?
Latin motto = GLORIA OLIVAE
Interpreted to mean - The glory of the olive
Name - ?
Olive branch has always been associated with peace and this description might have been most fittingly applied to Pope Pius XII as a reference to his coat of arms. There is little doubt that this legend can be more easily explained in the future than the one before. Some medieval interpreters have gone out of their way to stress that Malachy in his prophecies does not specifically mention that no Popes shall reign between Gloria Olive and the last Petrus Romanus; nor on the other hand does he mention that there will be others.
< Note: As stated earlier the original prophecies of Malachy did not contain the Petrus Romanus motto - it was added after the 1820 publication of the prophecies. >
The Order of St Benedict has claimed by tradition that this pope will come from within the Order. St Benedict himself has prophesied that before the end of the world comes about, his Order will triumphantly lead the Catholic Church in its fight against evil. The Order of St Benedict is also known as the OLIVETANS, which may well account for another interpretation of the prophecy.

This new pope, Pope Benedict XVI is 78 years old. Odds are he will probably not last that long, no more then a decade probably. According to the prophecies, he is the second to last pope. Heres what it says about the last pope:

The final legend is self-explanatory and The Prophecies of St. Malachy conclude with this short but fascinating prophecies as follow:
"In the final persecution of the Holy Roman Church there will reign Peter the Roman, who will feed his flock among many tribulations; after which the seven hilled city will be destroyed and the dreadful Judge will judge the people".

Well, as with all "prophecy", time will tell whether this is true or not.

LOL at these 'prophecies'.

from wikipedia:
-----------
"Pope Paul VI (Flos florum)
Pope Paul VI, who reigned from 1963 - 1978, is described in the prophecies as Flos florum (flower of flowers). His personal arms bore three fleurs-de-lis. However, this disregards all the other papal arms that had flowers on them as well :)lol) .

Pope John Paul II (De labore Solis)
The prophetic motto corresponding to the last reigning pontiff Pope John Paul II is De labore Solis, which literally means "Of the labor of the sun", but "labores solis" also means solar eclipse. Pope John Paul II was born on May 18, 1920, the day of a partial solar eclipse over the Indian Ocean, and buried on April 8, 2005, the day of a rare "hybrid" eclipse over the southwestern Pacific and South America. It has also been suggested that the associated Latin phrase could also be a cryptic term for de borealis sol, of the northern sun, being a luminary coming from Poland to the north. It has also so happened that an abnormally high number of sunspots have been recorded throughout all the many years of his pontificate. Another interpretation points simply to the sun rising in the east and his being the first Pope from Eastern Europe."

Benedict16:"The next motto is Gloria Olivae, the glory of the olive. Prior to the papal conclave, this motto led to speculation that the next pontiff would be from the Order of Saint Benedict, whose symbols include the olive branch. Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, selected in April 2005, is not a Benedictine, but did pick Benedict XVI as his papal name, which might be regarded as a fulfillment of this prophecy.
Alternatively, less specific interpreters have predicted that the next pope will promote world peace (as in an olive branch). Pope Benedict XVI has chosen "Pax" (peace) as his papal motto. The self-proclaimed Pope Clemente Domínguez y Gómez of the Palmarian Catholic Church claimed that he was the glory of the olive.
There had already been, before the election of pope, a concomitance in two unrelated events occurring on the opening date of the 2005 Conclaves. First, a Turkish presidential candidate won overnight the northern Cyprus elections favouring re-unification peace talks of the two sectors; the Cyprus flag has two inter-locking olive branches in it. Secondly, the Italian Prime Minister has seriously been considering resigning and holding early general elections succumbing to pressure from the leftist opposition called l'Ulivo."
-------

These are so vague, and believers will find ANYTHING that was happening ANYwhere in the world at the time (or close to) to 'fulfill' these simple 2-word prophecies. In the case of Benedict, he self-fulfilled it by naming himself Benedict, which keeps the ruse going...

Let me try one....

THE NEXT PROPHECY WILL BE:
"moon lover"

THIS PROPHECY WILL BE FULFILLED BY:
-anyone alive during any of the Apollo missions to the moon (or alive when JFK made his moon speech)
-anyone who lives w/in 50 miles of any coast on any continent of the world, or anyone who has been to the beach(since the moon causes waves)
-anyone who has been alive during any tidal waves/tsunamis
-anyone who studies archaelogy, geology, or astronomy
-anyone who has eaten cheese (since everyone knows the moon is made of cheese)
-anyone who, AFTER being chosen, names himself the "Cheese Master"

Now, let's see if we can narrow these candidates down by a few billion......

Yeah, when I was around 6 or so. :D I just must've forgotten that particular scene, if by your comment you meant that it was in RotJ. I just thought that something like that-- Sidious looking that way as opposed to looking normal, would've been pretty cool to see for the first time in the flow of the film.

Sorry to have ruffled your feathers, Sir Cyan. :p :)

Pretty much, yeah.

And a paraphrased joke shamelessly ripped off from The Hour:

This is a pope that went from "Joey Ratz" to "Benny Sixteen".
He'll fight right in with the other Italians.

Just great. Well at least he's old as hell so he can die off pretty quickly. But how much damage will he do in the meantime. Could he actually surpass Bush? Yeah I'm coming off harsh, but I was sincerely hoping for a pope from one of the more hardship-worn countries; they're the ones more likely to use common sense rather than try to be all penultimate holy saints who ignore the bigger picture in the name of God. Damn it.

Hey, I'm happy. He seems like a great choice, from everything I've ever heard about him... I'm actually rather surprised, as I was expecting someone less known.

What's rather funny about this is that he was probably the cardinal most feared by certain groups -- the "anybody BUT Ratzinger" contingents! Heh heh heh...

Actually, listening to alot of the religious scholars interviewed in NPR today Ratzenberger's story actually sounds alot like a fallen jedi. When he first started his church career he was considered progressive and then suddenly took a hard turn to the right and continued on that path to the present day.

I wonder who or what turned him to the dark side.

of course you do. the dude is a friggin' Rat-Zinger. a new Dark Papal Lord.

he will be jacked into the PlayStation3 network, and get into the Cells of your body and perform Papal sex within you.

you will then turn into a groveling, babbling dribbling pile of goo.

His credo isn't that far off from John Paul II; it's not like he's going start backpedaling on anything the previous Pope has done, and he's going to be the head of the Catholic church, of course the guy is going to be keeping tradition high and in effect. Seriously, if this guy cleans the Catholic church of the one thing that JP2 didn't, (pedophilia), he'll be great Pope and great guy in my mind.

That gloria olivae prophecy is pure bullshit. The JP2 prophecy didn't have to do with anything that happened with him.
