Oh I know; in this instance - with initials/abbreviations - it goes both ways. Like I say, no right or wrong when it comes to this, really. I see why you remarked about what I said, but by no means was I implying either was the correct way - just pointing out that we speak NES/SNES as words in the UK.

see i think most of the confusion is coming from the phonetic spellings people are using and how THOSE are possibly pronounced differently...

Yeah, the google translate thing is a little off. I say it like the google translate one but I put emphasis on the "MA" instead of the "RE". The translator was the only thing I could find.

I had a friend who was convinced that Cloud in FF7 was pronounced "Clod" and I could not persuade him otherwise.

I remember an old game magazine that showed early art and screens of FFVII, and Cloud, Barret and Aerith/Aeris were called "Claud", "Bullet" and "Ealis".

I know someone who pronounces Deus Ex "Deuce/Doose Ex." It's infuriating.

I remember playing Xenogears back in the day and pronouncing Deus as "Deuce". I would also say "Deuce ex Mah-sheen-ah".

lol that's pretty much how us Brits call them, though it's more like Nez and Snez. En-ee-ess is always hard on the ears to us ;p

I know a lot of old school gamers that USED to call them that back in the day, and still do nowadays. Why would anybody get so bent out of shape hearing NES as Ness or Nez, or SNES as Sness or Snez? People are more than happy with pronouncing XBONE as X-Bone.

That's actually the correct way to pronounce it. "Ree-you" is acceptable. "Rye-you" is terrible.

Seriously. It especially annoys the heck out of me when fighting game commentators call him "Rye-yoo".

Although, I guess I shouldn't complain. I pronounce Lara Croft's first name as "Laura" and no one can make me say otherwise.

I also used to pronounce Kokiri as "Ko-ko-ri", but I changed that.

Anyways, as for strange things other people have said, I've heard people pronounce Maya's first name (from the Ace Attorney series) as "May-a", as in the month May. Can you believe that?

We know from the Japanese writing of these names, which are spelled out in syllables that can only be read one way.

Deku is デク, "deh-ku"

Saria is サリア, "sah-ri-ah"

Now of course we don't need to be slavish to the Japanese pronunciation, especially when we're talking about fantasy or foreign names that would probably be anglicized if they were spoken in VO. But it does provide a solid guide as to what the creators thought the name was when they created it.

That they spelled Mario like マリオ and not メリオ seals the deal on Mare-Ree-Oh being wrong, for example. (Dead horse beatings up in here, lol).

Thank you for the information, I had no idea about this and really appreciate it. I've been saying those the wrong way for 10+ years than. I will have to get used to the proper names now that I know what they are supposed to be pronounced as.

I've heard so many people pronounce Sudoku (which is su-doh-koo) as su-doo-koh and su-doo-koo.

It just gets me. The word is so simply phonetic and just like "karaoke" people just miss the mark completely.

In the TV show intro they say Pokeemon, it's always how I've said it. On the soundtrack CD 2.B.A. Master they say Pokeemon a lot too. Most people like to say Polka-Mon though, which I associate with the Weird Al song.

To be honest, I don't really mind/find it weird when people mispronounce obscure Japanese words, and don't find it weird either, especially when usually they've been given English characters to approximate the kanji but with no understanding of what the most natural sound of those characters is locally.
