Riot-Grrrrl was something of a chick rock/punk type movement in the 90's. Bikini Kill, Babes in Toyland, Sleater Kinney etc... mostly coming out of the Kill Rock Stars label.

Kathleen Hanna, who was with Bikini Kill is now doing Le Tigre, hence the riot grrrrl-isms here.

Riot grrrl is a raw, incendiary brand of feminist punk that emerged from the early-'90s indie-rock scene and sparked a subculture that lasted well after the initial movement began to fade. Riot grrrl was a blend of personal catharsis and political activism, though most of the attention it drew was due to the latter. Many (but not all) riot grrrl lyrics addressed gender-related issues -- rape, domestic abuse, sexuality (including lesbianism), male dominance of the social hierarchy, female empowerment -- from a radical, militant point of view. The similarly confrontational music favored raging, willfully amateurish blasts of noise, with only a rudimentary sense of melody or instrumental technique. Riot grrrl's abrasiveness served several purposes: it ensured that the anti-corporate music would never achieve alternative rock's crossover success (the label that released the highest percentage of riot grrrl records was called Kill Rock Stars); it defied stereotypes of women (and female musicians) as meek, overly sensitive, and lovelorn; and it found a powerful expressive tool in noise. To most riot grrrl bands, the simple act of picking up a guitar and bashing out a screeching racket was not only fun, but an act of liberation. To outsiders, the musical merits of riot grrrl could be highly variable, but to fans, what the movement represented was arguably even more important than the music. The riot grrrl movement was mostly centered in the Seattle/Olympia, Washington area; several exceptions included England's Huggy Bear, as well as several grungier groups like Babes in Toyland and L7, who fit the spirit of the style but were more tangentially related to its ideology. It was mostly rooted in punk's DIY ethos and tradition of protest, but in terms of direct inspirations, Joan Jett was lionized in many quarters of the movement for her simple, punky hard rock, confident sexuality, and independent business sense. Riot grrrl's emergence coincided with an explosion of female talent in other wings of alternative rock, and the term was frequently misapplied in media accounts of the phenomenon, which incorrectly labeled more accessible alt-rockers like Hole and PJ Harvey as riot grrrls. True riot grrrl bands -- Bratmobile, 7 Year Bitch, the queercore outfit Team Dresch, and the center of the riot grrrl universe, Kathleen Hanna's Bikini Kill -- never even approached popular acceptance. Since most bands weren't very prolific, the movement's initial flash of enthusiasm faded after a few years, but it continued to enjoy a lasting impact in indie culture, where the original bands helped inspire countless feminist zines and were still looked up to as icons and role models. Kathleen Hanna continued to record with several different projects, and scene veterans Sleater-Kinney became critically revered indie stars several years later, thanks to their ability to blend riot grrrl's passion and ideals with hookier songs and intricate instrumental technique.

There was too much negativity and militancy in that scene for my liking. Rather than equality between the sexes it seemed more like some demented "Girl Power" thing.

Some great music though, especially Sleater Kinney who still rock harder than most bands coming out today.

I remember at a Bikini Kill concert, the band made all the guys go to the back of the venue, hehehe.

also, to get the topic back in track, im listening to un dia normal by juanes, this is a fantatsic album. this is good, clean pop.

Yeah, that's one thing I noticed while researching that scene. (I love researching scenes). Instead of striving for equality between the genders, as you said, it was like "WE HATE GUYS! THEY'RE CHAUVINIST PIGS! I'M A FEMINIST LESBIAN.. LOOK AT ME!!". Great bands though.

Le Tigre is awesome, though their second album is kind of meh compared to the first. I hear they're working with Ric Ocaseck on a new album to be released later this year... can't wait for that.

Sleater-Kinney is awesome as well.

Its merely allright, but the album im listening to is unmastered, so it could turn out better. Frankly i owuldnt be surprised if this album on soulseek isnt the one they plan on releasing*

If it indeed ever comes out, this is turning out to be the new tapeworm or something :X

I'm anything but a music fan.. I get enough music in movies and games. :p

Lately, however, I d/led iTunes and have been buying lots of stuff. I just search for a song I liked a long time ago and d/l other stuff by the band or come into one of these threads and randomly pick something and search for it on iTunes which lets you listen to 30 seconds of every song. After buying TWO Tool (thanks to the ga appreciation threads heh) albums off amazon and ending up not liking it one bit I'm sticking to iTunes. :)

I'm listenig to stuff by A Perfect Cirlce, Audioslave (those guys freakin' rock), depeche mode, enigma, cranberries, and some anime/game OSTs (mostly Gundam SEED and Chrono Cross.)

well, have you heard anything by manu chao? this is sorta similar though a bit more complicated musically, as in higher production and more mainstream. manu chao's hooks and rythms are usually very simplistic (which i preffer).
the songs are electronic beats and acoustic guitar driver pop basically, quite mainstream sounding, now i know some of you dont really dig that sound...so check it out and see if you like it or not.
what the hell is computability? anyway, your engineering prof liking the same band/artist as you can definitely not be a good thing ;)

damn, how can you not like the first TOOL album? :p
if you like audioslave check out some stuff by soundgarden and rage against the machine. and try to get some singles/greatest hits albums by the cure, the police. pet shop boys etc. singles collections are a great way to be introduced to new bands rather than randomly buying albums IMO.

lol, sorry dude I was talking about Tool. I did not like the band. I don't rock. :p

Though to be fair I only spent like 10 minutes listening to bits here and there, but the music was just too noisy (A Perfect Cicle is too but they have some nice tunes). I'm listening to Lateralus right now and stuff like schism, parabola and dispositon are pretty cool but overall I was disappointed. The ga appreciation thread made them seem God-like...

Disposition is one of my favorite songs of all time though. The song Lateralus is pretty special though. You should give that another try.

Though if it's not your thing, it's not. 'sall good.

right now i am listening to nothing.

but earlier i was listening to:

Ben Kweller - Sha Sha
Only thing in my car. Good CD still worth listening too :)

The Vines - Winning Days
What can i say, I'm a total sucker and I find this CD extremely strong.

Helio Sequence - Love And Distance
Good CD so far. I really like their sound and it has showed signs of maturity.

Ratatat - Ratatat
Such a good zoning out CD. I play this at work a lot.

It is, essentially. Parabol leads into Parabola..

It's like Edge of Sanity - Crimson II, essentially it's one song but cut up into 9 tracks. Most concept albums are like that. They sound as if it's one whole song but cut up ;)

With that said.. I've been listening to:
Yes - Close to the Edge
Rush - Different Stages, Grace Under Pressure, Hemispheres, A Farewell to Kings, Moving Pictures, Signals, etc etc. Pretty much all of their albums that I own (still gotta get Feedback)

Of Montreal - Satanic Panic In The Attic

Without exaggerating at all, it's the best thing I've heard in ages. Years even. Hell, I don't think I've ever enjoyed an album this much. Rapture Rapes The Muses and Climb The Ladder are fucking gold. When I first got this I was scared it'd just be more Of Montreal wierdness, which I was so not in the mood for, but this is... amazing. Best of the year obviously.

Same stuff as the last listening thread.

Gatsby's American Dream - Ribbons and Sugar
B00009LVZY.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

More riff changes on this cd than your whole cd collection combined, and not a single chorus. Very unique song structure compared to 99.9% of the other bands out there. Gatsby's rocks.

The Bled - Pass the Flask
B0000A4GHE.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Hard hitting, and breakdowns aplenty. Best metalcore out of Arizona since ever.
