What aspects of the PS3 and X360 controllers would you change for next gen?

360: a better dpad and it will be perfect.

PS3: battery pack like the 360. I hate when I turn on my ps3 and find controller needs to be charged. I would rather switch battery pack like I do with my 360.

One more thing, the analogue click on the DS3 is crap. It's fine when the analogues are at rest, but it sucks when you're moving them and clicking at the same time. Super mushy. Also, the DS3 needs to be made from a more robust plastic, the way it creaks makes you think the thing is going to disintegrate in your hands.

360: Make the horrible dpad go away and get a better one, rechargeable batteries built in, make the sticks more durable, flat buttons.

DS: Concave sticks, better triggers, slightly bigger overall, AND DON'T YOU FUCKING TOUCH THAT GLORIOUS DPAD.

My perfect next gen controller would be:

- Xbox 360's body form
- Xbox 360's R and L triggers
- Xbox 360's concave analog sticks
- PS3's face buttons (I prefer the flat buttons instead of rounded ones)
- PS3's R1 and L1
- PS3's bluetooth connection
- PS3's internal battery
- Vita's d-pad
- interchangeable d-pad and analog sticks (so I can switch D-pad position with any of the analog sticks)

would love to hear what you're opinion is on my dream controller GAF

That solves the "keep playing with a dead pair of batteries" (dunno about NO batteries though) but not the "use it as a PC controller" angle. I'm going by second hand accounts, but when I say connect I mean it will basically be a truly wired controller, NOT a wireless one just drawing power through USB. That's what the Dual Shock 3 does, it will work properly as a controller through USB which helps for early Sixaxis controllers having a flaky bluetooth antenna, or PCs without a bluetooth receiver.

360:
-better d-pad
-internal rechargeable battery so the back can be flat like the wired controller

PS3:
-concave analog stick tops
-better triggers
-how about an all new design

Both:
-next-gen rumble tech
-grippier back surface

PS3 Dualshock3:

I would change those shat triggers and those crappy analog sticks.

360 controller:

I would add a battery/charger setup to something similar to the dualshock3

What advantage is there to having to buy AAs than just having a rechargeable battery already there?

I bought one set of 4 rechargeables for 14 bucks. Have used them for the entire run with my 360. I've had to replace a dual shock (50 bucks) because the battery in it stopped charging. I'll take using my own batteries any day of the week over being forced to dump an entire controller if/when the battery goes.

If I had my way, the Next Xbox would have a nearly identical controller with minor improvements, and be fully compatible with 360 controllers.

360 - better d-pad, rechargeable batter

PS3 - pretty much everything. I can't stand the playstation controllers. They uncomfortable and feel extremely flimsy and cheap. Buttons/triggers/joysticks all feel awful.

people think the 360 controller is large and heavy? You guys must all be young kids or just have really tiny hands.

DS3, fucking triggers are ass, give it fucking triggers that don't feel like mushy crap when you press down on them.

Better yet, get rid of triggers and just give me buttons. Those things are only used properly in racers, and racers are meant to be played with a wheel and pedals anyway. Triggers don't give immediate response in action games and are simply an annoyance.

I don't really about any other change. Some haptic touch gimmick or positional rumble would be cool, I guess.
This. If the Dualshock 3 went back to the L2/R2 buttons of the DS2 it would be fine by me. That's probably all that I would change honestly. I like the looser sticks, I feel like I have finer movement in games with them.

If they were to make them tighter though I wouldn't be totally against it, I know many people find them too loose. But I have no problem with the current sticks.

not once, but twice you refer to it as the "DS3"

PS3
Never was a big fan of the horizontally aligned analog sticks. Makes aiming difficult in FPS. Also, they're overly sensitive (or is it just me?)
When it's not plugged in, it's on. Always. During movies, Netflix, etc. Runs out of juice whenever i want to play a game. CAn we get it to turn itself off like the 360?

Uh... Not sure if anyone's pointed this out yet, but you can turn on the option in the PS3 settings menu.

LOL...if Sony cant design a better controller for a predominantly SHOOTER driven medium, they need to fold.

Seriously...It's the damn Playstation 1 controller. Lets move forward.

They need to fold if they don't make a controller meant primarily for FPS games? wat.

I hope Sony rips off the 360 controller. PS3 is a great piece of hardware but the controller is a crime against humanity.

You do know, you have have it turn off automatically after 10-15 minutes of inactivity?

What advantage is there to having to buy AAs than just having a rechargeable battery already there?

I own a lot of things that use AA. At any given time, I have many rechargeable batteries ready to go. If my 360 controller craps out... bam, it's full again in under a minute. Ditto for anything else. My DS3 spends so much time empty that it might as well be wired.

Xbox360:
- 2 additional buttons on the back of the controller, right where your middle fingers rest.
- Haptic rumble technology
- Improved analog stick: longevity, precision, and build quality

+ Hopefully MS offers a wired version of the next Xbox's controller. I find wireless battery management & controller shut-downs - annoying.
And with the wireless controllers - keep allowing me to use my own rechargeable batteries.

.. looking at it now, nothing about the 360 controller is that great,

if you've used the logitech precision, you've held the best controller ever.

The off set 360 analog sticks are stupid.

Clueless.
The 360 controller is the best console controller ever made. That Ninendo basically aped the design (minus the offset sticks) is a compliment from them.
The offset sticks give you better FPS precision. Xbox, being an FPS-centric console.

And I had the Xbox wireless Logitech controller. Didn't like it.
Logitech doesn't even make console controllers anymore as far as I know, only a couple of PC ones, which don't look like anything special.

-better durability on the sticks, I swear these things wear out in 6 months flat. never an issue with DS3
I don't understand how so many people have an issue with this. I still have my old launch pad, and the grips have worn smooth, but it still works absolutely fine. I take care of my stuff I guess.

This isn't a DS3 vs. 360 controller battle. I just want to see what you guys would keep and change for each controller next-gen.

DS3:

-slightly bigger handles
-shape similar to the 360 controller, maybe not as big
-concave analogues
-proper triggers that are concave, springy, not a lot of travel and are more like the 360 triggers
-i would say swap the dpad and analogue stick, but i think that the dpad in the secondary position is both good and bad. I think the dpad in the main position has its merits.

360:

-no more battery pack, rechargeable out of the box
-not so heavy
-better durability on the sticks, I swear these things wear out in 6 months flat. never an issue with DS3
-higher precision on the sticks, DS3's analogues are more sensitive
-no more hard plastic face buttons, please stop with these
-thinner handles
-much better dpad

I like all of these, the big one for PS3 is the triggers even a cheap 3rd party attachment is better, 360 has to fix dpad

360 controller: D Pad I guess, even though I dont have trouble with it when it's used for weapon selection and stuff, I know it's supposedly bad for 2d fighters (though I'm not sure if that's true either, I do know I actually kinda prefer the stock 360 controller to my mad catz fight pad for SFIV)

Other than that I'm not sure the 360 controller can be improved much. It's damn near perfect. I think controller evolution may have reached the end of the line.

I used to want 6 face buttons on the stock 360 controller, for Streetfighter games, but I'm not sure it would be good for every other genre of games on the planet, where 4 is probably more intuitive, so I'm not sure about that now.

PS3: Make it like 360 controller.

Oh and of course I guess, maybe make 360 controller rechargeable? I'm not even sure though because for me, I've got that problem licked. What I do is buy a 48 pack of Best Buy Dynex Alkaline AA's (basically store brand). These run $15 but I think last time I got them on sale for $11 or something, so they're cheap. They are pretty good batteries and last a while, and with a stash of 48 you're basically good forever, (or at least a year or two+, theyre also handy around the house, christmas morning etc).

Then you dont have to even worry about the whole recharge thing.

The problem with the recharge thing for me is my couch sits outside cord range to my TV, even the 360 9 foot play n charge cords or whatever. With a play n charge kit, you're still corded, and it still wont reach my couch. Let alone the 1.5 foot PS3 charge cord. So then I have to move, which I dont want to.

Although I guess you could be sure to plan ahead and charge when you're not playing (like I do with PS3). It's just one more thing to think about.

So rather than mess with it I just use the AA's as above. I guess if they make it rechargable, do a 15 foot cord...I'd probably be cool with that. Just make it still able to take regular batteries, be able to replace the rechargeable pack, and not all sealed up like the PS3 controller battery, so if it starts wearing down it's no prob.

Allow me to easily replace the battery. I never want to have to buy a brand new controller because the battery alone won't hold a charge any more.

DS3: Redesign the L2/R2 'triggers'. That's it.

Do not fucking change anything else. Especially the dpad, analog placement, face & L1/R1 buttons.

Xbox
Just stick with THIS!

xbox-360-silver-controller.jpg

Maybe as mention before loose the battery pack and have a charge solution as the PS3 controllers have :)

Assuming that we remain clinging to buttons, analog sticks and d-pads.

PS3: Native support of third-party input devices; build a new one from the ground up, but don't make it like the 360-controller (damn you, Nintendo!). Preferably, make it split in half. I like crossing my arms and projecting a generally unapproachable attitude towards people and games (bless you, Nintendo!). Keep the d-pad and discard the current design and layout.

360: Native support of third-party input devices; build a new one from the ground up as above, this time disregarding the cheapest parts available and making it less bulky. I have hands, not hoofs; gross motor skills are important, I know, but I have fine motor skills, as well. The original shouldn't feel like a Chinese knock-off, and more importantly: it shouldn't feel like I'm holding a nondescript, heavy lump of plastic. Keep nothing of the current design.

360: better D-pad
PS3: sticks like on the 360 controller. and proper triggers that are used for shooting.

Came in to say that -- triggers aside -- the DualShock 3 is perfect. If any Sony representatives are reading, don't get any crazy ideas about switching the position of the analogue stick and D-Pad. *shudder*.

Take the Gamecube controller, replace the shoulder buttons and Z with Dualshock 2-style R1/R2/L1/L2 buttons. Swap out the C-Stick for a second proper analogue.

Bask in the knowledge that you have created the greatest controller of all time.

Install blast shield to protect from all the haters who can not bring themselves to accept ergonomically placed face buttons.

it can turn itself off...

i have it to turn off after 10mins,saves battery

I personally love both controllers, but for the next gen there should be a touch pad on the back of the controller for accurate mouse like movement for the benefit of fps and to be used in novel ways.

Also I would like a 360 controller split in half, 2 segments, and maybe magnetic movement calculation in the right hand segment for high accuracy aiming.

Both controllers are really fantastic controllers at present, but there is definitely a need for higher accuracy movement, a little bit of innovation and flair, keep what works and add new tighter control methods into the mix, fuck swinging the things about to swing my swords, i just want precise controls that feel fantastic to use.

The DS3 is perfection for my hands. Don't change a thing, Sony. I'm ok with the bulkier Xbox style controller, but they feel a little too big.

You people that want the 360 controller to move to internal batteries are crazy. With the quick charge kit I always have at least one fully charged battery at the ready. If my controller battery is dying I just switch them out and am ready to go without ever having to tether the controller with a charging cable.
