What aspects of the PS3 and X360 controllers would you change for next gen?

not once, but twice you refer to it as the "DS3"

PS3
Never was a big fan of the horizontally aligned analog sticks. Makes aiming difficult in FPS. Also, they're overly sensitive (or is it just me?)
When it's not plugged in, it's on. Always. During movies, Netflix, etc. Runs out of juice whenever i want to play a game. CAn we get it to turn itself off like the 360?

Xbox 360
Fix D-pad to be like PS3's.
Better durability on the analog nubs.
Battery compartment on my old controller never could fit right, so it'd occasionally slip and get disconnected. So if it isn't a charger controller fix that too

Already possible,
it's a setting you can adjust. Mine shut down after being idle for half an hour.

I miss the days when we got a crazy new controller to learn every generation. Now we're just expecting minor tweaks but for everything to stay the same. I blame Sony. :/

I guess everything I'd answer has been said. So outside of splitting the controller into two Wiimote halves that retain full functionality, or other crazy experimental input ideas I have, I'd like to see this:

A button on the back, where your middle finger naturally rests.

It seems so obvious.

Is the 360's controller really that heavy for some of you?

It's just ~60g heavier than the DS3 (which admittedly makes it 30% heavier, though).

Just curious, of course.

Something I'd like to see someone trying is completely ditching the face buttons, and place all of them on the back of the controller (except for things like home, start, pause, etc.).

There have been third-party controllers that have done that.

First-party controllers will never do that because not all games are shooters. The button diamond is still very useful for many types of games.

360 controller is near perfect for me, just needs a fixed Dpad and I mean fixed, not trial and error twisty ones which can snap after heavy use.

Do not want a built in battery, once that thing goes bad i'd have to fork out £35 for a new controller.

Battery packs should remain in the 360 controller imo. As someone who likes owning old consoles the batteries dying and needing to replace them by opening the controller up would be crap. Atleast make them easly replaceable.

Better D-pad on the 360 and other face buttons and the controller might be perfect for me. Maybe some tiny improvements in durability here and there but that would be it.

The DS3 though needs more improvements. Especially when it comes to ergonomics. The controller design is horribly outdated imo. Some better triggers and moving the joysticks around for better ergonomics would do the trick. My thumbs cramp up after a while on the PS3.

I'm wondering what that WiiU pad feels like. I wonder about the stick placement. because it might be better then the other controllers and has the best d-pad without a doubt. And it has the great 360 pad ergonomics.

That's a fantastic idea, I just picked up both ps3 and 360 controllers and what you said makes sense.

My thumbs cramp up after a while on the PS3.

I always find this odd to read as I have the reverse experience. My left thumb starts to cramp up after long periods of play time on the 360 controller.

I prefer the stick placement of the dualshock, I just want the logitech shoulder buttons and a logitech/360 sized grip.

Lol. Ds3 battey lasts very long. Its not like you have to replace it every 6months

DualShock:
Make this one wireless and rumble, with home button.

This bring up an interesting point - The original Playstation dual analog controller had concave sticks and lengthened handles, which are both great design decisions...Then they reverted them for the DualShock. Way to go, Sony!

I don't understand how so many people have an issue with this. I still have my old launch pad, and the grips have worn smooth, but it still works absolutely fine. I take care of my stuff I guess.

I'm not talking about the grips, i'm talking about the deadzone that gets worse over time and the analogue drifting that happens.

This isn't a DS3 vs. 360 controller battle. I just want to see what you guys would keep and change for each controller next-gen.

360:

-no more battery pack, rechargeable out of the box
-not so heavy
-better durability on the sticks, I swear these things wear out in 6 months flat. never an issue with DS3
-higher precision on the sticks, DS3's analogues are more sensitive
-no more hard plastic face buttons, please stop with these
-thinner handles
-much better dpad

these work better then rechargeable packs IMO. whenever my dualshock dies I have to stop playing because the usb cord that came with my PS3 is so damn short. with the eneloops all I need to do is swap out the drained batteries.

As many have said definitely the D-pad. I have no problems with the 360 controller aside from that. Maybe a built in battery solution like the PS3 controller.

With the popularity of the Arcade and 2D/2.5D games, a solid D-pad is a must.

Agreed. This is what the DS4 should be based on.

Split controller based around 360 pad with Nintendo dpad.

Full motion+ level sensors in each half, ir pointer in each half. Kinect 2 camera that can track both like move.

Smart glass integration with phones.

Allow the halves to be joined as normal pad, wheel, around a phone for Wii U like pad, in a zapper for a gun.

Yeah, as people have pointed out, this is in settings, and has been for ages.

As for the dualshock, keep those sticks in the same place! It feels just fine, playing an FPS it feels ideal, both your thumbs in the same positions.

360: fix the d-pad

PS3: needs to be completely redesigned. 16 years ago this thing was ok for my smaller hands and the types of games on the ps1. today it's still the same controller with bad stick layout. needs to be re-built for the games we have today.

Not a problem for me. I have a usb wall socket adapter and if not my laptop is near by for charging.

MadCatz Call of Duty / FPS controllers have something like this.

I would add motion controls to the 360 pad design, split it in half wii style, make the dpad like the sega saturn dpad, and make the sticks so that the deadzone is a little more loose so that the floating stick issue that occurs with use of the pad doesn't occur anymore.

360 controller feels so good for shooters, but being able to use pointer controls with it would be quite good, though I wonder if you merely split the controller in half if it would be comfortable?

Why do people complain about the 360's d-pad so much? Apart from fighting games (where lets be honest, you're doing it wrong if you're using the d-pad in the first place) it serves no important purpose apart from things like weapon selection. It certainly doesn't server a purpose that requires precision. Not that I can think of anyway.

My choices :

360
Get rid of the battery pack and have it USB chargeable out of the box.

PS3
Concave sticks
Make it heavier
Make the sticks stiffer

Didn't that meme die in 2007? Has this ever happened to anyone?

If so here is a $3 replacement.

360: better D-pad
PS3: sticks like on the 360 controller. and proper triggers that are used for shooting.

Nooo. The 360 triggers are worse for shooting than the R1/L1 on the DS3. A log swing analog trigger is good for driving games, but not for a binary input like shooting.

360:
More durable sticks (mine looks like a dog has chewed the shit out of it)
MUCH better D Pad for fucks sake
Everything else is perfect

PS3:
Get rid of the parallel stick layout. It feels awkward.
Bumpers and triggers too high up
Needs better triggers (like the 360)

Oh, and you don't need a G27 or Fanatec wheel to play Burnout, NFS or any other type of arcade racing game so we NEED those TRIGGERS to STAY PUT!

The 360 controller could do with a D-pad like that new Wii-U controller has. Make it rechargeable via USB, but also make the battery removable so that you can buy a wall charger and spare battery if you want to, or just easily replace a battery that can no longer hold its charge. I don't want to ever have to play while it's plugged in via a cable.

The PS3 controller only really gets right what the Xbox controller gets wrong. Good D-pad. It's rechargeable, but the battery can't easily be swapped out. Everything else about it is pretty horrible.

Ideally I'd like both controllers to be modular. When I pick up the 360 controller, my thumbs fall naturally on the left analogue stick and face buttons. That's fine for many games, but sometimes I want my thumbs to fall naturally on both sticks, so the Wii-U controller design would work better for that and if you could swap the position of the buttons and sticks it would be perfect. It's even more an issue for the DS3 as when I pick that up, my thumbs fall on the D-pad and face buttons like it's still 1997.

There's a nice feeling to shooting with the triggers, but yes, I'm quicker at shooting on average on a DS3 vs. the 360 controller. The only reason shooting is R1/L1 on the DS3 is because the "triggers" on that controller are so damn bad. If they were half decent every developer would have used them for shooting and ADS.

No fucking blinking. And no green/blue LEDs. Also no molding gaps, they are a bitch to clean.
Agreed on both counts. If they do have flashing lights, at least let me turn that off. It would be nice if, for example, you could set when it warns you about a low battery or disable it altogether if you want to. The flashing lights on the 360 controller that warn you of a low battery kick in too early IMO.

The 360 battery warning should be on top and small or really should get rid of it all together with just a screen prompt. The Wii U pro looks great but need to use it for a while to see.

- both companies officially support PC connectivity. No reverse-engineered dualshock driver, and 360 should use bluetooth so I don't have to buy another PC dongle.

- both companies should make a portable version of the controller. maybe the sticks can lock flush with the face. the point is so that it fits better in a laptop bag.

Revert the 360 dpad back to the S-Type model, and move the start & back buttons to below the left stick.

Don't make me do this again Microsoft :(

This a thousand times. Built in battery is an awful idea.

I don't like a single thing about the ds3. The sticks and triggers are downright garbage.
It's too light
It's too small

PS3

Triggers...those freaking awful triggers. maybe also longer horns/grips or whatever those things are called.

And a battery pack, see below.

360

Nothing?

Well besides those sometimes squeaky triggers, and maybe a flatter batterypack.

Oh and that awful D-Pad obviously.

not want a built in battery, once that thing goes bad i'd have to fork out £35 for a new controller.

Exactly

360 controller:
lighter
no battery pack - in built batteries
PS3 face buttons
PS3 buttons
no offset analog stick

that would pretty much epitomise the perfect controller.

the dual shock 3 is a nice controller all round, but improvements for that would be:
proper triggers
improved ergonomics
maybe concave triggers. PS3 triggers have never been a problem for me tbh.

Not sure if late to this but there's an option on the PS3 to turn off the controller after a set amount of time...

Edit: beaten like a dead horse, should've skimmed the thread.

They need to use the Vita d-pad, it's excellent, hopefully Sony takes it into next gen.

I don't know what controller thing I picked up for £3 a few weeks ago, but it was rubber handles that slip over the controller, R2/L2 cover and analog concave bits, it puts a bit of heft into the controller and makes it better to hold and less like it is going to break.
Hopefully Sony move away from the nasty plastic feel and have something nicer to hold.

I don't know if any one has told you in the last few pages as I skipped ahead, but there is an option to have the controller turn itself off after like 5/10/20/30 minutes and has been there for ages.

Split them into a pair of one-handed controllers akin to the PSMove Nav controller. Each would have...
  • A clickable analog stick
  • An analog trigger
  • A digital shoulder button
  • Either four face buttons or a d-pad
  • A small home/start/select button
  • Wiimote-like pointer functionality
  • Gyro and accelerometer
  • Rumble
You'd keep all the functionality of the current controllers while adding a TON of new possibilities. Honestly, I was hoping the Wii U would use something like this instead of the tablet.

Yes, don't Sony even have a patent or something for it, having them break apart would be great and allow all sorts of sitting positions without having to keep your hands next to each other.

Would also allow I imagine for accessorise that you could put between or attach to one or the other, Instead of say having a separate move controller you could whack a bit in the top or something.

DS3:
- Make the trigger bend a little, so my fingers don't slip when using them
- Keep(!) the the analog sticks of the newer DS3 versions (flat shape)
- Make the grips a bit longer

360:
- Swap d-pad and left analog stick
- Use a real d-pad
- Make the bumpers bigger
- triggers shouldn't go all in, it hurts my fingers
- face buttons should be a bit more...flat
- build better quality controllers, my triggers squeak like hell
- No more battery pack
- Find a better solution for charging, it never seems to work properly
- make it a bit thinner

And overall: Find a solution that has all the sticks and buttons of a DS3/360 controller, but make it in two pieces like the Wii controller. That controller, while certainly problematic for a lot of games, is easily the most comfortable to use for a longer time.
