• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

what BAD THINGS will we see within the next gen?

30 fps. Get used to it, now.

Also, animation is going to be the biggest bottleneck next gen; everything's going to be photorealistic and move like a 4th-grader's stop motion animation of Waterloo. Alan Wake's a good example; Elder Scrolls Oblivion is another. Games that look gorgeous in screenshots and bizarrely disconnected in motion. This ... is the future.

i really doubt the 30fps thing. the reasoning is that i dont really see graphics being a bottleneck until we start talking the highest resolutions.

Unstable frame rates.

Speaking of which, what's going to happen next-gen with framerates regarding all the resolution modes available? Will running the game on a SDTV help the framerate? :P

Besides that point...

I fear that a lot of games will look samey because of the UE3.0 engine factor.

i dont see the UE3 engine resulting in samey looking games. sonic heroes, GTA and the one other "major" renderware game all look incredibly different. its all in how the artist uses the paintbrush.

Xbox 360.

(Kidding, stop thinking of a flame.)

Actually yeah, I'm worried about frame rates. In a way, I'm almost thankful for Revolution not having HD, although the OPTION would be nice. You shouldn't force people to do it. :\

But does anyone else think we might see more focus on games this generation? With PS2/Xbox/GC, we saw tons of remakes and compilations. Now that we got all that out of the way, companies I think will (hopefully) focus more on original titles.

Just like this gen, we are going to see a lot of shit on the market. Nothing much will change though, its going to be the same as this generation, just with more powerful systems. Anyone hoping that we are going to see anything innovative in games is dreaming. We are still going to recieve quality games with some new features that help make the game better, like CQC in MGS3, but i doubt we will have any mind blowing innovations. Nintendo will be the only ones who will try to introduce something different.

-Xbox 360 hate and undeserved Nintendo apologists
:lol What a fucking turkey.

Anyway, XBox Live Marketplace is sounding like an absolute travesty so far. And increased game prices. Basically, anything that results in me paying through the nose for pretty much nothing.

i remember back when the idea of XBL by itself was a travesty. MS knows what its doing. i fear that EA will make the industry even worse than they are making it right now IE harder for anyone besides themselves to survive.

Still more fixed camera angles - It's been two generations, please for the love of god developers ditch the shit camera systems!

More god damned sequels to games I fucking hate. Hey, how about some sequels to games that were kind of interesting; but could have used some refinement? Don't need Devil May Cry 4, Final Fantasy 13, and Blah blah blah.

I know, nobody is forcing me to buy them; but that's still sales taken away from fresh new ideas. Screw what the sales say. Force new and original concepts on the gamers, or damn them for all eternity.

No a single mention of Nintendo in this thread.. which leads me to my guess..

A) Rev will either be Nintendo's last console
B) Best console or..
C) both

But overall,

- I'm actually expecting price drops to happen at a much faster rate. Games won't stay at $60 for too long because people will not buy as many. (wait this is a good thing)

- Generic games with advertisment

- The FPS war genre will be replaced with the western cowboy shooter genre

- Most game names will end with the numbers 4, 5 and 6

back to a hardware type situation...watch this video. the graphics look fucking amazing until you start seeing the explosions that 1, disappear in 2 seconds and 2, dont cause any damage to the friggin level. WTF??? i wanna see rocks and concrete and metal and glass flying all over the place with ever missle launched. DESTRUCTABLE ENVIRONMENTS PLEASE!!!

Framerates....

Developers will ALWAYS push hardware beyond what it is designed to do (or try to) and framerate will suffer as a result...

Interesting thing about framerates, I wonder how MS will make the devs support 1080i in addition to 720p. Will it be required for devs to code the game to output 720p and 1080i? or Will they let devs just code for 720p, and let some kind of scaler chip inside X360 output 1080i?

I ask this because there's a huge framerate difference for coding for progressive and interlaced. Progressive output games can have fluctuating framerates, while interlaced games will have to be either 15, 30, or 60fps. No fluctuating framerates.

Any thoughts people?

Speaking of destructible environments, I want a Phantom Dust 2 with Ninja Gaiden's combat engine + cycle through cards with your D-pad. That would be the best game ever.

You don't understand how much reading this hurts on the inside.

A world of only 30fps locked console games would be the trigger to get me back into PC gaming ;_;

What are you talking about, it is a travesty. It's the biggest videogaming scam of all time, and most people are too stupid to realise it.

Double Fine and other small devs going under (though, truth be told, I wouldn't even be that surprised if Double Fine doesn't survive the year...)

Nintendo continuing its slide into irrelevance in the console market (I believe the big first-party games will still be good, but it seems as though they've pretty much given up on actually competing with Sony and Microsoft)

Tomb Raider next
The return of 989 sports games (the baseball ones aren't that bad though)
Buyouts, mergers and lots of derivative crap.
Still no sign of Kid Icarus, Star Tropics, Earthbound, Skies of Arcadia, Bionic Commando sequels....

give it a rest. do you like madden by chance?

It's been said, but Animation, especially on the PC side. I understand that in multiplayer games one should keep it simple enough, but during the single-player there can be the best graphics ever. In the universe even. Then the character takes a couple of steps and it all turns to shit, in game or in cutscenes. I don't ask for much, just that the animation is on par with at least Metal Gear Solid 1 for PSOne. How many years has it been since that game came out, and we're still seeing advanced games with basic arm motions and guys running in place while turning to face another character? Come on developers, it's time to get to the next level.

Didn't we have a thread like this a while ago? Anyways:

-More "thug 4 lyfe" games. More games with rappers as characters in them.
-More crap licensed music, less original soundtracks
-Less innovation, less new IP, more same old same old stuff
-Too much emphasis on graphics, not enough on gameplay
-Microtransactions and bug patches, especially as excuses to release incomplete games
-Animation may not be as good
-Low framerates, poor mipmapping, jaggies, load times, same shit from this gen just sharper (still) visuals

Nintendo being the only one’s to try anything new.
Only One New Zelda game ( I hope I am wrong)
Matt stays at IGN
Folder pays his Tab at E3
Japanese gamers still having a one track console mind
UK gamers still liking EA
FFVII Being remade (Means I have to buy the damn PS3!)
EA
Capcom
EA
Internet gaming sites remaining open
Larger influx of Thursdayton’s
And no one believing!!

Cel-shading. Please, no more of that crap.
You wouldn't want a game that looks like, say, the intro of Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter throughout? Those results could probably be had with next gen, and that'd be hot.

Going the other way, normal mapping is going to be out of control. I fully expect lazy devs to just normal map patterns into walls and environmental elements in a lot of places over spending time on a good texture map for them.

Why is everyone concerned about frame rates? Did we have problems with frame rates this gen?

Anyway. My only concern is prices, prices of the games in particular. I hope next-gen isn't going to make every game expensive, like, at least 70-80 dollars or something.

Yah, quite often actually.

The biggest complains regarding framerates were about rock solid 30fps games not being 60fps. It was more about the sake of complaining than anything else. It is sad when people refuse to play a game when it has a rock solid 30fps but have no problems playing a 60fps wich stutters, but the game is still aiming for a 60fps peak so it is all ok. Sad but true my friend.

I'm sure its been said countless times earlier, but developers ARE going to fall this generation

Plus the major disappointment about games being too short.

I'd like to know where the video game industry has gotten the precedent that a medium can raise prices and not suffer for it (theatrical movies and comics are spectres of their former selves because of it). And conversely, how they're missing the example of mediums that opted to lower prices industry-wide becoming much bigger and more profitable for doing so (DVDs and manga being the prime examples).

Games as a whole aren't selling that great now, for every GTA or Madden there's 50 Oddworlds and Blood Will Tells. Those games certainly aren't going to do better by raising the prices, what the hell kind of thinking is that?

Super hyper-real faces.... with dead eyes and lips that move stiffly and out of synch with the voices. And realistic-looking characters going through the same exact ranges of movement again, and again, and again. And amazingly detailed main character/vehicle models that look almost real, moving around in repetitive and much lower-detailed environments. Basically, constantly seeing something almost realistic and then being jolted by the parts that remind you it's an artifical environment created by people with limited time, resources and power.

He says with a blurry MGS pic as his avatar.

Seriously, how does one make a coherent response to such an irrational, pulled out of one's ass type statement?

I think next gen can help a lot with this. Using CPU power to tween animations and smooth things out, proper IK etc. Its not all about storing huge numbers of animation frames.

Will it happen? Maybe not. But I hope so.

This thread makes me think that in ten years, gamers will look back on the current gen as a golden age (or silver age, at least).

Not likely. Most games will probably render to a 720p/1080p framebuffer regardless the user set TV resolution. If not, console development (and gaming) will lose one of its core benefits.

More crappy ragdoll physics and animation.

You will be thankfull for ragdoll type of physics next-gen giving you omgwtf-realistic clothes, extremely interactive and destructible envirronnements and such. It can also create nice for cars and damage engine physics.

You know, I wonder about that. My friend and I were talking about how, will kids these days look back on games like GTAIII and Halo 2 and Tony Hawk x the way we wax nostalgic on a game like Super Metroid or DW4... and he said that they won't, that the games don't have that kind of timelessness and level of simplicity that made earlier titles so memorable. I'm tempted to agree, since this era seems to be one of incremental upgrades to existing franchises - in 10 years when kids this gen are all grown up, I doubt they'll look back on Halo 2 when they have Halo 5, which will probably end up being a fairly similar game at its core, barring any type of paradigm shift (holograms? VR?).
