What do you think is the best racing game of all time?

I'm really interested in playing this. What makes it special? I just got an N64 recently. I remember renting this game once as a kid but I don't remember too much of it. Thanks!
The variety of the tracks and the special shortcuts are really the highlight of this game. On every track there's basically multiple routes you can take each time, due to some well designed shortcuts. On top of that it's fun to unlock cars like the alien one. And I haven't played in years, but I seem to remember there being a battle mode as well.

Very difficult to answer.

Not sure if I think it is objectively the best but Mario Kart DS springs to mind first.

Loved the game. Mission mode was great and I miss it sorely in new versions.

Also love the Sega classics like Sega Rally, Daytona, Scud Race and Outrun franchises.

I'd really love a new Metropolis Street Racing or Project Gotham Racing also. I didn't know how much I would miss the series so much until they stopped making them.

PGR3 (I'll allow 4 but I preferred 3 personally)
Daytona USA arcade sit down cabinet
Super Mario Kart (SNES)

WipeOut 2048 is secretly one of the best games on Vita, and probably my favorite racer ever. Shame it's 30 FPS, I know that's pretty disqualifying in a genre like this.

Daytona 2 - Advanced Course, Hard car, Manual Transmission in the deluxe cabinet with hydraulics is perfection. Allow me to quote myself from another thread, you may rephrase the text to better suit this thread in your head:

I am very saddened by the omission of the greatest level with an amusement park theme of all games ever. In fact it is not just that, but also sheer arcade racing pleasure, and for me the best of its kind.

Behold the glorious perfection that is Daytona 2 - Advanced Track (Joypolis 2020):
(Youtube)

The start/finish line is under a swinging pirate ship:

Afterwards you race through a haunted house:
Supermodel02.jpg

Then there is the sci-fi section of the park. After the second lap a giant spider leaps onto a corner and shoots laser beams from its eyes at you:

After that you drift through the wild west section before racing along some more modern roller coasters back to the finish line:

Also Project Gotham Racing 2, which was not just the best online racing game experience I have ever had, it also had the most interesting yet challenging single player mode to unlock the TVR Cerbera.

PGR4 has to bem entioned as well, though I certainly had more playing time and fun with 2, mainly due to online being more of a public and yet exclusive thing with PGR2 than with PGR4.

Then there is the already mentioned F355 Challenge with the definitive vrsion of Long Beach.

Dethkarz needs to be mentioned as well.

Honorable mentions go to POD, MElbourne House's take on the 24h of Le Mans, which at the time qas awesome, Outrun 2, Sega Rally, Forza 1, which had the most varied track selection of any Forza, Gran Turismo and Rock 'n' Roll Racing.

Depends because I can't compare a game like PGR2 (my personal choice for greatest racing game of all time) to something like Mario Kart of Hydro Thunder (two series I think are best in class in their respective styles). If I had to choose just one game though in all the various racing incarnations there are it would have to be PGR2. I'm biased because I spent so much time with it and neglected other racers as a result but isn't that the case with almost anyone stating their personal opinion? It's always based on your experience and for me nothing beats PGR2. The online community. The ease of getting into the single player game. The challenge of online play with good players. The sense of accomplishment to finally beat that stupid Ultimates levels and getting the TVR (non Paris download so no the forest green doesn't count :p ). The sound of racking up Kudos. The car handling. Everything about the game was pretty much perfect. It was an amazing achievement and it's sad we can't ever go back to it.

Need for Speed: Underground 2 or Need for Speed: Most Wanted

The rest of the franchise is hot trash and I really don't like racing games but I spend DAYS playing those 2 games on my old laptop when they came out.

I think that this is such a general question you almost have to break it down by platform and genre. It's too hard to just nail down one.

Rally Sim: Dirt Rally
Simcade: Forza Horizon 3
Sim: Forza 6
Pure Arcade Racing: Daytona USA
Party/Kart Racing: Sonic All Star Racing Transformed

Not a huge racing guy (I suck at them...drifting challenged), but my favs are

Motorstorm Pacific Rift (I'd kill for a sequel / HD remaster)
Mario Kart series
Blur
Daytona arcade

Daytona 2 - Advanced Course, Hard car, Manual Transmission in the deluxe cabinet with hydraulics is perfection.

That game's graphics are mind blowing when you realize it came out in 98. Twelve year old me would have been blown away had I ever seen it in an arcade at the time.

I keep hoping that they'll do an HD release of it. The Daytona 1 port was pretty amazing (texture filtering aside), so I'd love to see a similar port for 2.

Sweet, thanks for the info! Looking forward to checking it out. Same goes for the game in your avatar, as well. Have it on PS3 but just haven't gotten to play it yet.

That covers a lot of games off of the top of my head that are essential plays in the racing genre that for me, defined a lot of what makes it great. As a huge Motorsport fan it's hard to not cover any and all types of the sport, from oval to road to dirt. You can't just pick one, as they all do some things better than others.

This is a really rough question. I think my answer would be Burnout 3: Takedown followed by Forza Horizon, Burnout Revenge and NFS Most Wanted 2005

For the sake of the question being posed here, I lean more towards arcade-style racing games. I love racing sims, but they merely attempt to approximate a real-life scenario as closely as possible given the technology available at the time. Arcade racing games, on the other hand, embody the medium better by being designed around only the most fun aspects of racing, and then amplifying them accordingly. With this in mind, Scud Race / Sega Super GT is the perfect racing video game.

Burnout 3 hands down.

Their is nothing like it on the market. Pure adrenaline racing moments. The only game that make me look like a retard while playing it. I actually move my feet in intense moments and i cant help it. That's why I always play it alone lol

Too bad EA does not want to do a HD remake.
