What game were you expecting Destiny to be?

I thought the Explore world areas would be about 3 times bigger and the story would at least be engaging. But that's where me being wrong ends. It's everything I expect. Everything I saw in the Beta and Alpha, but just more of it.

I was expecting Skyrim meets Halo meets Diablo meets Fable's expectations as Project Ego.

Exactly what it is but with more story and about 2x as many missions that get more varied and a few substantial side quests.

What it is is a slightly open world halo sized game with no story, less variety and the best example of filler I have ever seen instead of meaningful side quests.

I thought they took some of the story out of the Alpha / Beta to keep spoilers out but nope. Nothing to spoil.

I can't believe people base their expectations for what a genre a game is going to be in based on PR saying it's "going to be huge and awesome and space" and then their imagination filling in the blanks.

My imagination was running wild as to what this game was going to be (Mass Effect??) right when the game was announced. Then I actually watched a video where it laid out exactly what kind of game it was... a coop dungeon crawler with not much interactivity beyond pull trigger/shoot bullets and or magic. I was highly skeptical because I've never found MMO-style bar-filling and loot amassing very attractive. I always thought it was meta game in lieu of actual gameplay.

Then I learned to stop worrying because I actually played the beta, for free, from which to make a purchasing decision. I love getting better gear for my character, I love existing in this world in the "Second Life" sense, and revisiting areas does not immediately make me consider it stale content. The enemies are bullet sponges but I love having to work with my teammates to kill them. This game scratches the right itches for me.

I was expecting it to be some thing where you could get into a ship and fly to new planets for objectives. I was also expecting the planet areas to be much larger. It might have been possible if only it wasn't being held back by last gen consoles.

I was expecting a world that had more interaction. More random moments.

A guy on the videogamer UK podcast summed ut up for me, it feeks like the only way to really interact with such a beautiful world, is basically shooting/killing it.

Playing this and going to the tower made me miss the citadel from mass effect so much.

I expected it to have better mission design, better encounters and a reason to explore the fucking world. Other than that it's as expected.

Pretty much exactly what it turned out to be, since I followed every bit of information that had trickled through from the beginning. Seems like some people were expecting open world RPG's, to which there was never any indication of that being the case.

I was hoping for much more player free-form player interaction. I had imagined more open worlds where you'd be roaming around and dynamic events would happen in which you'd group up with other players in the area. That kind of happens now, but it's not nearly on the scale I expected. I guess I just hoped it would be more like an MMORPG. Having a way to communicate with nearby players would have been cool, too.

Also, I was hoping for a lot more player customization options. Loot is sparse and, as of level 8, at least, there has been zero customization of my player character through leveling. It's always just been one new ability or passive to choose from upon leveling.

Most importantly, I wanted a cool story. I like the setting, but there is just fucking nothing in the game in this regard. Nothing at all. This has been the biggest disappointment for me so far.

I played the Alpha & Beta.... So pretty much exactly what I'm playing now.

Not to mention this game will evolve over time with events, DLC, etc. It's a solid game, in my opinion, and one I'll be playing for a long time to come.

This game is very much Assassin's Creed 1: Online Edition.

Instead I got Borderands with better gunplay and less world building.

It's Bungie though... I feel like they have some massive story bible with chapters and chapters of solid world building... that they're planning to parse out over the next decade and don't want to blow their load right away. For the record, I think this is a very bad way to go about things.

Some fell for the marketing machine it seems.

The beta was super sparse and desolate. I didn't think Bungie would make such big changes from them. They had no time. Additionally when the mentioned the dearth of worlds for the retail package and I had a bad feeling.

It's pretty much what I've expected after playing the beta, and I'm fine with that. What is really disappointing though is the entire narrative: Bungie created this whole epic space story with Halo and you felt involved and yet with Destiny they seem to fail with that. It's one boring voice actor reading boring lines of a boring story after another, and this kind of sucks.

And they should have included much more of the lore in the actual game instead of putting it into cards on their website.

I need to play more for a solid opinion though.

Agreed, the story is boring and lacks any decent narration. The characters are boring, the back story deserves some explaining, the story itself needs more exposition.

The enemies are boring and you fight them because they shoot at you but I don't feel like they really pose a threat.

Disappointing in many ways.

Borderlands with the visual, story and gameplay polish of a Halo game. I only got the visuals. I know it's a cliche example but I can't recall a single game I've found so monumentally disappointing since Sonic 06. The story is awful, the gameplay is serviceable at best, the game is basically everything I was afraid The Pre Sequel would be, except with a hilariously inflated budget and no jokes. And Dinklage. Ugh.

The Always Online stuff is just awful too, I expected it to be used for SOMETHING. There is absolutely no relevant gameplay experience with the "shared world" aspect, other than the "party quest" style crap in free-roam. 95% of the time it's beyond useless, and absolutely not worth the disconnect errors erasing my progress. I really don't know what I expected from "shared world", but I figured it would be something. It wasn't. It's fucking nothing.gif.

I expected it to be bigger, have a story and have more interesting objectives.

I expected at least 10 areas, not only 4.
I expected there to be a compelling story.
I expected there to be some cool quests, not the standard go there, kill this, deploy ghost stuff. Very tiresome.

I'm pretty sure they'll add a lot of content with DLCs and successors, but for 60€ Destiny is just too light on content.

All I expected was an Online rpg/fps but what I got was an mmo structured shooter with different grenades classes as role playing.
The mmo structure being used as an excuse for awful mission design and story telling.

literally Borderland +Mass Effect with a hub world and I'd have been overjoyed

As far as the story goes, the thing that really bugged me was your first visit to the speaker. "I could tell you the stories... But I won't."

Mostly Borderlands with Halo-quality combat AI and presentation. It does seem to take from both, but fails to compare well to either of those series' strengths, too. I'm hoping that they can meaningfully address the issues the game currently has before a sequel or paid-for DLC has to step in and do the same.

Something that would hold my attention for at least a week. I'm not sure I'll make it past the weekend. It's not bad or busted, it's just boring. I just feel like there's no compelling reason to keep playing other than to see if it gets any better, and the deeper I get the more I realize it stays the same.

Pretty much the game I'm playing, just thought the story would be far deeper, especially given this...

"There is a very defined storyline, with a beginning, middle and end," says head of community Eric Osborne. "For those who want to binge and concentrate on story, you can have what feels like a very directed, cinematic experience."

Yea...no.

Halo like mp and a great space exploration campaign with good story (both sp and co-op, with a mmo mode somehow like MAG)

That was pre-alpha obviously. Didn't buy it lol.

After playing the Alpha and Beta and seeing the launch content leaked I pretty much expected that the game would be what it is. The only thing I didn't anticipate was how bad the story was going to be. Not at all like Bungie to deliver such a poor narrative.

Yea...no.

"Entire solar system explorable." Stuff like that is what got me so excited. What a wasted opportunity.

I was expecting it to be what we we got but just better. More specifically a better campaign and a better story. It just needs more varied missions, more varied encounters, maybe more variety in guns with more modifiers. Basically just more variety in general.

The story is also quite incomprehensible and feels only 1/4 done. They barely set up anything at all so you're just confused by all the random terms they use and barely anything happens in the story.

I wonder if something changed since then. There's no way any sane person could have said that with a straight face. There is no story in this game.

Borderlands + Halo

pretty much what it is...

It's Bungie, so the story was always going to be trash.

I expected it to have MMO-like fetch quests with a hint of Borderlands mixed with the combat of Halo.

Pretty much what it turned out to be IMO.

The game I am playing right now, except with a better story and a better voice acting, it kills every time when my ghost tells me in a dull voice: Oh, BTW, there are more fallen coming .

I thought it was going to be another dudebro shooter in space settings, but then i tried the beta and fell in love with whatever it is.

To me, I guess it ended up being a fun co-op loot grab that i can play with my friends. I never had super high expectations like some people though. I'm a little disappointed in the scope and story, but overall I've already got more hours into this game than i have a lot of other supposedly better games over the years. Overall I'm really happy with what we have so far, and to be clear I haven't played a single game of pvp yet, so this is all talking about single player/co-op.

Honestly, after being in the Alpha and Beta, I expected it to be just as it is but with a lot more, diverse content. Ya know, like at least 3 more planets/maps and some interesting levels and encounters.

The story feels so incomplete it's a shame. It's like they don't even scratch the surface of the wonderful world they built... it's basically on par with Final Fantasy XIII

I thought it was going to be a very big game in terms of world, exploration, and content (diversity in gear etc.), but it's like pretty small, made up of instances, and sectioned off. Just feels like I'm playing "Horde Mode" the game. I am enjoying it tho., but definitely not what I expected it to be.

Edit: Maybe they are saving this for DLC, which is why I hate Season Passes, but I digress.

Borderlands + Halo

It is most certainly not that - Borderlands is no epic of game design, but things like "having different missions to do" and "building your character" and "goofing off with friends" and "having a story that I want to finish" and "finding interesting/unique guns/equipment" and "having something to do (True Vault Hunter, different difficulties, etc) after I finish that game" and "being fun" are missing from Destiny.

It's like they just had one hook in mind and built the game around it - turns out it's not a great hook. All I want is something like the Hornet/Pelican vs. Scarab fights but with 32-64 people working together and things flying all over the place. Add some quests and loot to that. It's a humble dream.

Co-op fun with a great story and a decent amount of content.
It do not have a memorable story and the content is minimal with little to no variation at all!

It really falls short on the premise and the somehow exaggerated hype!
