What is a mouse? A miserable pile of circuits (or: what mouse are you using?)

Had a Razer Naga for a while and it was very useful for the MMORPGs I was playing. TERA in particular - I played a warrior for a while and it was essential to be able to move with WASD while holding down attack buttons. Can't do that without 8 fingers on one hand.

Was nice for FF14 too, since I played WAR in that...and it had sooo many keybinds.

But I never had any illusions regarding the quality of the sensor, it was a major step down from my Deathadder. And it eventually developed the same problem as the Deathadder - double clicking. Took it apart and cleaned it, didn't fix the problem.

I replaced it with a Logitech g400s and while it took some keybind gymnastics I adjusted pretty well. And now that I'm on MMO hiatus it's just fine. Super sensitive though.

I'm using this one until I get a proper pc-gaming mouse.

Had one, and the scroll wheel rubber pad peeled off after one year using it.

Also the rubber sides started peeling off.

The tip of the rubber side is starting to peel, but it's not bothering me yet. I've had 2 and the only major problem I've had has been with the USB dongle. It keeps getting stuck in my USB ports and the plastic comes off!

I bought that T630 thinking I'd love a slim travel mouse like that. What a huge piece of shit. So uncomfortable and the clicking mechanism is fucking terrible. I'll never stray from my Logitech Anywhere MX again.

On my desktop, I use the Razer Abyssus. I wish it had side buttons but it's seriously the most comfortable mouse I've ever used (for my grip style). Perfect weight, shape and tracking.

Just bought a SteelSeries Rival to replace my 10+ year old Logitech MX500.

It's a bit big but I like it. Closest shape/form to the MX500 I could find.

got an old MX518 on one computer and Gigabyte M6900 on the other. the latter I bought because it was only $30 and it's the mouse some BF4 streamer I watch uses (Stodeh). don't need a $70 mouse to be good, also won't make you good unless you were previously using a truly terrible mouse

I have a razr mamba and would not recommend it to anybody thinking of purchasing one. Right mouse click is way too sensitive, the USB plug was broken, and I've had to glue the rubber grips back on twice. The config software is stored on the device so your settings go with you, but it is slow as molasses and not a useful feature for me and most people. Plus it is way overpriced. I think most of the money went into the packaging. It is the mouse equivalent of beats headphones.

I've been considering this mouse for the longest time.

Does anyone here use a trackball mouse?

Any other recommendations?
I like a 3-finger trackball like this better.

It can be a 1, 2, 3, or 4 finger trackball. Most of the time it's 2 fingers for me.

One of the main reasons I bought a trackball is to reduce strain / pain on my wrist and fingers and it's definitely worked. I will say that I wish there was a scroll wheel on the mouse I linked. I'm considering that Microsoft Trackball that was linked earlier that has a scroll wheel on the side. I do have some kind of thumb pain / stress from clicking the tiny "middle button" on the left of the mouse. (I use it to activate "middle click" or autoscroll in lieu of a scroll wheel.)

There's a wired version as well, if wireless isn't important to you.

Also those ones with the ball in the middle. Those always seemed strange to me.

I have actually been using that Microsoft 5000 blue tooth mouse for like 5+ years at least as my secondary mouse. I had it paired with my MacBook in college, now I mainly use it as my mouse when I go to meetings and unlock my Windows laptop. At work I mainly use this stock Dell one from maybe a year ago that I kind of don't mind other than it not having the side back + forward buttons.

I want a new mouse. I have a Microsoft Sidewinder X3, but I don't think it's right for my grip style. I use a finger tip claw grip, and I end up holding the mouse at an angle to accommodate that. I also don't want one that's ambidextrous, because I have to go out of my way to reach the right side button at the moment. It's effectively a useless key with how awkward it is to reach. And I don't want to spend a lot. I don't think I can justify spending over £30 on a mouse.

That said, I would probably get an IntelliMouse if they still made/sold them. What is it with companies discontinuing lines that are fan favourites? The Logitech MX518 is loved by everyone as far as I can tell and they don't have a direct replacement. It's a license to print money and they're not interested. I don't get it.

Is there a variant made by Logitech or Microsoft that has middle click aside from the one I initially posted?

I need middle click for closing programs and tabs as well as creating new tabs from links.

It's the other way around for me, using the ball with my thumb seems uncomfortable, it's just one of those things where the first version you use is the one that makes sense to you.

Well, there's this guy, which is the one I used to have before the wireless one came out. Apparently that must be discontinued now though >.>

This is true.

I've got a question for you guys. In game my mouse movements seem jerky. What might I do to avoid this? Heck, not just in game but also in in general use.

How important is the surface you use your mouse on? I'm just using like... a felt thing... but the bare table isn't that much better.

How sinful is it to use mouse acceleration?

Suface?
Felt?
Table?

All of these silly issues could be resolved by getting a trackball.
Use it absolutely anywhere, just as good as always.

MX518 of 6 years finally bit it, so I had no choice but to join the G502 master race. Feels good man.

Not for gaming. And here I was thinking you'd actually post something useful.

I switched to a Naga for the extra buttons, but I would have continued to use a Trackball if it were not for that. I played every kind of game with a Trackball, from shooters to mmos, and felt like I was performing at the exact same level I would have without it.

Trackballs are not in anyway inferior to their mouse counterparts. The mechanism for movement is simply moved from your hand to your fingers or thumb.

Yeah, I don't play FPSs at all, and, aside from MUDs, most of my PC gaming is stuff like Icewind Dale and Baldur's Gate and such, so I generally just stay out of the discussion as far as how they are for gaming.

But, for general usage, they're a dream come true.

No idea why someone would want to make gross motor movements (hand/wrist/arm), when they can just make fine motor movements (thumb, fingers).

Classic Logitech MX518 on my desktop. The rubber texture is peeling off and the logo on top is actually fading from my hand being on it, but I'll probably only replace it when it definitively dies.

B008OEHPPM_1.jpg

Using the Microsoft Sculpt Touch for my laptop. I like it, except the touch "wheel" is a little too sensitive. Sometimes when I'm browsing, it'll just scroll up or down because I moved my finger above the surface but didn't mean to touch it. I've been looking at other wireless mice, but I can't seem to find one that I really like so this one seems to have legs, if only because nothing else seems all that much better.

Ive had really bad luck with these 'gamer' brands. Laser mice from steelseries and razor have crapped out on me in only a few months. And everytime Id go back to my trusty logitech optical.

Dont know why I ever decided to try out other brands. Actually Im not sure why I tried getting laser mice either they feel weird as hell and imo worse for gaming.

been using the mx500 for 7-8 years without any problems

fucking awesome mouse

Anyway.

How big of a difference can the surface make? What about mouse acceleration?

Mousepads were mainly useful for when mice still rolled, they don't have any effect on mouse tracking, it's all experiential now. You simply have to ask yourself if you like a certain kind of texture in the mousepad.

Almost all high level and competitive players shy away from mouse acceleration and anything that can induce inconsistency into their play.

Logitech G100s

What a fucking piece of shit. LMB starts missing clicks after 1-2 months, squeaks. Replaced it once and the replacement is doing the exact same shit.

Disassembled the first one and discovered that basically they went so cheap on the PCB that the solder joints literally rip off the PCB under pressure. So yes that mouse button may be rated for a bazillion clicks, but normal usage is going to fuck up the PCB soldering because there's barely any copper on it.

Thankfully for the second one I ponied up for the protection plan, so now I just gotta get my ass into Best Buy to exchange it. Again.

I miss my IntelliMouse Explorer from the 90's. GOAT, that mouse was.

Yes, yes they are. This was a bitch to open up in particular. Well made, Microsoft, well made.

At the moment I'm just using a mini wireless logitech one with my cruddy laptop. Didn't need anything more involved or bigger for gaming yet, though my desk did just get delivered today! :D

I will never buy a piece of Microsoft hardware again. Maybe I've just had back luck with their stuff.

What would be considered the most reliable yet still economic, basic feature, wireless mouse?

Have a gen0(cant even do firmware updates) Logitech G600.

I have worn the pinky side rubber down to the plastic.

Kinda like it for the 3rd button and the fact that its size makes it easy to fit my gargantuan hands.

Kinda looking to go wireless for next mouse but unsure what is good now.

Corsair M95

Most of my PC gaming these days is spent with MMO's, so I wanted something with a bunch of extra buttons for keybinding shit. Looks kinda weird, but those side buttons work really well. The way they're setup I can access all of them while barely moving my thumb.

steelseries ikari still going after 4 years but my right click is starting to stick :(

I also have the BLOPS 2 mouse , used it for a few months before going back to my ikari as i prefer the feel.

It sucks because i use right click as walk forward , so that sticking really ruins it for me.
Dont judge my control scheme.

When I used to work at a netcafe, we used the intellimouse. But it felt like they were breaking every dawn week. But I'll probably say that's because of the constant use.

Personally I'm just using the g500. So good.

Just get a Logitech of some sort.

I am using a G600 from Logitech. It has a shit load of buttons, it is marked as a mmo mouse, but I usually only use 6 of them.
But I like it and its great for games

I have my pc hooked up to my living room tv also, and there I use a apple mouse and it works okay even on win 8.1. It doesn't support gestures but scrolling works.
apple-magic-mouse.jpg

I might replace the apple mouse, because when I have people over they always mess up using it. "how do you right click?"
I only use it because of the great Bluetooth range and it was a deal when I bought my macbook air.

The Razer Naga Hex
B007WTAJTE_img3.jpg

Really great for playing DOTA2. Only issue that it is small for my hand and is a bit light (unlike logitech mice)

WOW! This mouse looks amazing. I've been looking for a new mouse to play MMO's with like wow and FFXIV and i was super close to buying the razer naga but it just seems like too many buttons. Then i was super close to buying the logitech G700 because it had less buttons but still enough to bind 4-5 of em to hotkeys.

But damn this looks perfect. Except that I dont really like razer. Is there any other equivilent logitech mice like this? I dont need the 20 buttons but just like 4-5 on the side. And i use the claw grip with just my wrist staying on the mousepad.

If there is no equivelent mice like this I will probably order this Hex tomorrow.

After using Logitech g400s for years I switched over to a Corsair M45. I like it quite a bit, my only complaint is that the thumb buttons are a bit small and took some getting used to. Other than that, it's been great.
