What is the single biggest lie ever to have been told in all of human history?

"My good friends, this is the second time in our history that there has come back from Germany to Downing Street peace with honour. I believe it is peace for our time. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts. And now I recommend you to go home and sleep quietly in your beds." - Neville Chamberlain

That one wasn't ever actually said by Gates, though I guess the idea that he said it counts as a lie.

The earth is flat.

This is an odd one.

The idea that people though that other people in the 15th century Europe thought the world was flat, is the lie. It was well known by sailors and scholars the world was round for over a thousand years before Columbus sailed.

Now, other cultures did believe it for a while later. The people of China did think the World was flat until the 17th Century.

"Nobody has the intention of building a wall" - Walter Ulbricht, Leader of the GDR. two months before the Berlin wall was erected. That's a good one.

The biggest lie in history of mankind however must be related to religion.

I'll just stick with the 20th Century:

That Pearl Harbor was an unprovoked, unexpected attack.

Also, that Co2 is a pollutant.

Who the heck are you quoting?

Anyway, I'll say WMD's in Iraq for now. Not saying Bush lied about it, but it's known that someone at least lied to him about it.

Pete Rose lying about gambling

OJ Simpson not killing his wife

Seperate but equal

Piltdown Man

Uhm, how is that even a lie?

Maybe my history is fuzzy, but I don't think Jews, people of color, or homosexuals were any more to blame than anyone else for WWI. Hitler didn't consider people who weren't descended from Aryans to be German

It goes without saying that this lie propagated has been so successfully integrated into the mind of gullible people that they actually think this is somehow not completely Hitler-esque horror.

Whether I am a mod or not, the same will hold true whether you like it or not.

1.The OP specifically stated you leave religion out of this
2.You're being a prick about something that is a huge fucking deal to people in the way you're making your statements
3.Your statements in the way they are phrased will bait in argument.
4.There are many threads to pick from for you to make your claim that religion specifically Abrahamic religions have done more harm than good, this is not one of them nor was it meant to become one of them.

I have nothing else to say on this subject. I'm not going to contribute any further to derailing this thread by arguing with you or any other people who chose to deliberately ignore the OP and post about religion anyway.

I don't think most of what people are posting even meet the criteria of the OP...
What does GAF think is the single most historically significant, blatantly dishonest statement ever made by any human being, ever?
To me that means it has to be, 1) something "historically significant", that is, impacted the course of world events in an obvious way; 2) Blatantly dishonest, meaning the person stating it KNEW it was false; 3) Made by any human being, meaning it would be nice if we had a specific person to attribute the lie to (rather than just, say, "the Romans" or "American history books" or whatever).

So the Bill Gates 640k thing doesn't qualify because Gates presumably wasn't knowingly telling a falsehood (even granting he ever said it, and ignoring that it's hardly "historically significant"). Neville Chamberlain's "Peace in our time" declaration wasn't a lie because he, too, really believed that. Same with Hitler blaming the Jews for Germany's capitulation in WWI. Hitler telling the English he wouldn't invade Czech-speaking Czechoslovakia WAS a lie, because Hitler knew he had no intention of doing what he said.

The attack happening to American Territory was expected, the unexpected part was the fact that Hawaii was hit.

He can say what he wants, but his premise is wrong. Believe me, I read the whole OP.

"And just to pre-empt the inevitable deluge of smart-arse comments about the Bible, 9/11 or some other cynical political bollocks like that, I'm talking about one specific thing a person has said that has been comprehensively proven to be false."

The Bible collectively is the lies of many individuals, which HAVE all comprehensively been proven false. So his premise is false, there's nothing smarmy about including it on the list by his own standards. He just wants to arbitrarily deny it access because, for better or worse, people like you don't like hearing mean things said about your religion.

But, whether it's personal or not, saying factual things that are factually in the Bible which are factually grotesque never will be, "being a prick about something that is a huge fucking deal to people." The mere fact that it is a huge deal to people does not absolve it from criticism

Umm, where did you get this all this information exactly?

You may not be understanding the question lol.

Not the biggest lie of all time, but a pretty big one in politics:

"Nobody has the intention to build a wall" - Walter Ulbricht adressing the concerns in Berlin just before the wall came up.

So when the OP specifically calls for no talk on the Bible or 9/11 conspiracy you go and post stuffs relating directly to the Bible or 9/11?
Because you know your argument could be made for 9/11 conspiracy theories too.

Your Maddoff reply was so much better....

The Bible! Shocking book, truly.

I understand the question. My answer was Gulf of Tonkin or Bernie Madoff, something like that. This was a response to that persons stating the Bible was. Which I, of course, agreed with.

This thread only arbitrarily wishes to deny the Bible as a lie, but his premise is, I'd assert, demonstratively false. Denying the biggest lie in history because it might offend people is truly shaky ground for an honest discussion indeed.

2.You're being a prick about something that is a huge fucking deal to people in the way you're making your statements

So because other people are stupid enough to fall for it he should humour them over their beliefs and not point out all the massive flaws?

Either "No dear, your bum doesn't look big in that" or "Of course I love you".

No, they knew that. The 'radio silence' bit was a lie too.

My answer to the question was not "The Bible" although my argument would certainly be that without the ridiculous limitations on the question, it would be. Mine was Gulf of Tonkin or Bernie Madoff, something like that. I was responding to someone who brought up that Jesus said he was the son of a virgin - a mistranslation of the Bible. And also agreeing with that individual that were the terms of this thread not so absurd, that would indeed be the big lie.

Later posts merely justify the point.

Trying to censor discussion never works when a specific point so naturally fits into the topic. 9/11 Conspiracy doesn't fit because it IS demonstratively bullshit mumblings of insane people; Bible talk does fit because it exactly fits the OPs specifications were it not for him randomly drawing a line in the sand.

I knew exactly where this thread is going before I clicked. Kudos to the OP for laying some ground rules.

I'd have to say:

Bill Clinton 'I did not have sexual relations with that woman'

He said it with such conviction and emphasis, to the whole nation and the world.

In before 'I did not have sex with that woman' xD

Hm, gaming side : 'you will say wow'.
Policitcs in the last 10 years :'wepuns of mash destrucshion' to invade iraq

edit: aaaaand I'm like 10seconds too late.

lol smokeydave, also 'it's not you, it's me' (it's always you)

Silly me, I thought people would read the OP.

No-one reads the OP. Those that did could still get around it by talking about religion, and not the Bible. Religion wasn't explicitly mentioned as an exception in the OP.

But why go into such details to fuck up the thread because really the OP was right in denying stuffs like that BECAUSE it leads the thread to basically be like any other thread about religion. I think we're all fine without another religious debate.

To someone deeply religious, there's no difference between your point on the bible being the root of all evils and 9/11 conspiracy, so they will argue, like in all religious topics, about it. And I'm pretty sure that's not what the OP wanted.
there's a reason he drew a line in the sand.

And my answer would be something along the line of any and all political debate of the last 30 years.

Amir0x, it is clear you cannot follow a simple suggestion and would prefer to stir the pot. Who is your god, and why do you go onto the internet to take aim at another's god? Should you be in your place of worship praying about this or if you are not religious person, go think of how you would want someone to treat you...

?

I want people to treat me EXACTLY the same way. If I am believing in bullshit, I want people to go to my face - not just on the internet - and tell me "dude, that's bullshit." if you are the type of person that wants to be coddled, then you live by a different standard than I. I believe in the Golden Rule, and this is precisely the way I would want someone to treat any absurd belief I have.
