What would you be willing to accept visually…

I mean, I still play fucking Nethack from time to time.

Among my most played games are Age of Empires 2 and Tiberian Sun. As long as it's fucking fun, I can transcend graphics.

I don't get what the resolution has to do with it. You can run a ps2 game in 8K if you want.
It's too abstract to reply, because a ps4 game could technically be RDR2, and that still takes years and years to make, more than some "ps5" or even ps6 games in the future, it really depends on the game.

Naughty Dog's problem is that they wasted years and tens of millions of dollars on a failed gaashit. Not that their production values are too high. TLOU2 was a $200M+ game. It was top tier in basically everything at the time it came out in terms of production values, and there is no reason to think ND would have said, "ok that's cool, no need to push this stuff we pushed for this game further next time, we're good".. That's just not the way this works.
Then why did they release Uncharted, U2, U3 and TLOU in the PS3 gen then only U4 and barely TLOU II the generation after. It's looking like maybe a single game this generation and even if TLOU III makes it to PS5 it will almost certainly be a PS6 cross gen game.

I guess my overall point is where does this end? A game every decade from studios? Would people really be happy with that? And if this is what happens you get games that don't review well or sell well and then what you just close a studio after a single failure? It doesn't seem sustainable in the short term let alone the long term.

it's really easy to say "Uncharted 3 looks great why do we need any more than that" but I never read a review of Uncharted 4 that said it looked too good or that ND wasted their time making it look so good. Hell when TLOUP1 was announced people on this website were like "why the old game looks good still" and then other people were like "no it looks very outdated compared to TLOU2 and they should improve it." This is why the standard is the standard. The people who say that they are fine with PS2 are lying. They're fine with PS2 when it is actual PS2 games (on an emulator at 60fps and 4x rendering and texture packs and so forth) but not when a game in 2024 comes out with 2003 production values.

I don't mean to keep shitting on Starfield (actually I do) but it really is a new game with basically last gen production values. And…. Nobody liked it. And everybody laughed at how outdated and shitty it looked.

I think AAA devs are foolish for not just cranking out PS4 level stuff and running it at 1440p/120. Would have much higher overall IQ than what we're seeing now.
