What's up with all the negativity around The Last of Us now?

Same thing with Bioshock Infinite. Glowing reviews and praise then a week or so later it's nothing but how terrible the combat was.

Uh, I'm only a couple of hours into it, it's fucking incredible so far. Character models are the best looking I've ever seen on the PS3. Writing, story, direction...it's just fantastic so far.

No negativity here yet anyway.

PS3 Exclusive GAF Cycle

Should be an image for this.

Yep. Ultra positive reviews come out weeks ahead of release so everyone gets hyped up. Then folks in the real world play it and the hype comes back down to Earth. And a month from now everyone changes their minds again.

Well judging from the ridiculous review this game got people are expecting a pretty much perfect game. When it turns out it has issues there's gonna be backlash.

I've given up on video game reviewers. Completely useless and always fail to mention the things that actually matter.

Pretty much. No game could be as universally loved and perfect as the reviews would lead you to believe.

It's a critically lauded first-party game. Of course some people are going to backlash against it.

changed it slightly, but should have been first post.

game is EXTREMELY well received critically. is backlashed against in forums shortly after launch.

I am pretty sure there isn't a single game where this is false.

I just lost 5 hours of gameplay today thx to the autosave glitch!! Any news when it will be fixed? It was my whole day playing. Apart from that the games incredible. I think some people need to take a chill pill. The games flawed me. IM putting it up there with my favs

Also remember, every big game without exception gets backlash here. Every single one.

It's exclusive? Even more backlash. You gotta realize there's thousands of posters, so by law of probability there will always be those with completely different opinions, and sometimes even shocking opinions.

There are people who think Mario Kart was the best looking game at E3, that MGS4 was GOTY, that Bioshock Infinite sucks, that DRM and weak specs + paywal for 499$ is a steal, that high end PC gaming is cheap... etc

You're going to get everything here. Best to keep it in perspective.

It always happens with games that are hyped up to be the best thing ever by the press. It sets unrealistic expectations that no game can live up to.

I am not usually the tinfoil hat wearing type, but I will cop to believing the game review industry is hopelessly corrupt. Seriously, how many times has this happened now?

1. Game comes out to universal reviewer acclaim.
2. Game turns out to have massive issues, whether from bugs or gameplay issues.
3. Backlash ensues.

This has happened going back to the 1980s. It's not hard to do the math.

Pretty much this, the game does have numerous bugs and AI issues and frame rate/graphic disparity (it looks fantastic in some areas and fair drab in others). the core game itself is very good however. but i don't see how it got all those near perfect scores

I thought if you went to "load save" you could fine your last save. At least that's what I read in the other thread.

People who don't get paid to review it are playing it now?

There's always a (normally deserved) backlash when 10/10 AAA GOTY games are released. Never forget Mass Effect 3.

Because NeoGAF hates everything. I am already playing the game for 2 days and it's one of the best games I've played this generation - if not ever.

One thing that did irk me is that I expected to be able to play the game when it was at ~50% per ND's press release on the digital version. What I got instead was the same wait with any other title until it was 100% downloaded. My connection is more than sufficient.

From my few hours with the game I'd say all of the review praise is mostly for the writing and story. It's top notch, really. And everything about the presentation from the sound design to the voice acting to the animation is stellar also.

Gameplay-wise it's not really blowing my mind. Now "Clunky gameplay" is an exaggeration I think. I like the combat a lot and I like how tense encounters can get. But mechanically it's nothing that hasn't been done before.

I think whether or not people agree with the barrage of 10/10 reviews and the Citizen Kane stuff will mostly hinge on their enjoyment of the characters and the plot. So far that's clearly the biggest point of interest. I can't really get with all that talk personally, but I'm enjoying it nonetheless.

To be clear, I am disgusted with the game breaking autosave bug over the quality of the game itself (which I haven't yet played). Anybody who played the game at all should have caught that. I don't know if these reviewers are sitting and watching movies of the game being played and basing reviews off that or what. There is simply no explanation.

but the GAME BREAKING bug didn´t happen to ANYONE untill yeterday.. come on.. how could anybody report about this ..?

Almost all games that are universally praised eventually get criticised because it does not meet people's expectations. Doesn't mean the criticisms aren't valid though.
Especially so if they are exclusive to one platform.

This happens with movies too. I remember the Avengers had a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes. When I saw it myself I was like wtf, that was it? High review scores raises expectations to impossibly high levels sometimes. The last universally praised game that really didn't get any criticism was probably Soul Calibur on Dreamcast.

The AI is definitely bad, I've had enemies just stand in the open doing nothing, I've had enemies run from cover to stand in the open doing nothing. Apart from that it's a good game. Just isn't the 10/10 Citzen Kane of gaming the reviewers said it would be. A solid 8/10 so far (near the end).

Nothing wrong with the Ai or gunplay, people think very game must have the same gunplay.

I hope you're joking about the AI, it's bad, really bad. I agree on the gunplay though, that is excellent, every gun feels and sounds powerful.

Big releases, hyped up games, always receive negativity. Some legitimately, and technical issues definitely stand, but some want to dislike something because it is hyped or big, in some cases. That's not to say that all negativity is this, of course, but this comes with all big releases.

Or to put it simple:

The Citizen Kane of backlash.

Citizen Cane was initially criticized. I'm not saying this game is the 'Citizen Kane of gaming,' I think that notion is silly and speaks of strong ignorance of why Citizen Cane is so important, but Citizen Cane didn't become the classic it was until after it was out for a while, the initial reception was somewhat mixed.

A 92% on Rotten Tomatoes doesn't really mean anything. Movie reviews are different than game reviews since they're rated on a much smaller scale. All that 92% means is that most critics felt the movie was a positive experience, not that they meant it was one of the best movies ever.

Just posted this in the official thread.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oP35xHrMy8U

happened to me about 20 minutes ago.

i think the gunplay is a little clunky too. Good game just needs a little work.

The thing you are filming a video of (your television) is in landscape orientation. This means that it is wider than it is tall.

The thing you are using to film the video is in portrait orientaton. This means that it is taller than it is wider.

Do you think this mix of decisions has lead to the video being as clear as possible?

I dont see any negativity here.
People are only complaining about tlhe Friendly AI not dectected by enemy ai which was done on purpose.

And the game has got great user opinion feedback so ?

Interesting to note that the press on twitter who disliked a lot of Bioshock are loving Last of Us. I'm hoping to have a similar reaction.

I won't be able to play this until tomorrow, so I've been staying out of the OT until I can dive in. Are the complaints really that bad? Maybe the game was just overhyped, I tend to think that about most exclusives.

clunky gunplay? are people really too stupid to see that Joel is not some fucking army guy or weapons expert?

He is just a normal guy with a gun who tries to survive, so of course you can't headshot everyone.

and all the other negative points OP listed are just as stupid.

Game is amazing, the only thing i did not like was the ending, imo a huge letdown but besides that no negativity at all.

Oh Dennis, I'm scared of how you'll take the jaggies...

There is always some adjustment time when going from PC to console. Last time was when I bought Halo 4.

But goddamn this game was supposed to be the second coming of Christ, I had to play it.

The main thing that annoys me about the gaming press is that they can have a game that's universally praised.

Then a month later, when they see it's getting hated on, they all turn on it and act like they always thought it was bad.

Resistance 2 is a perfect example of this.

How linear is the game?

It would be interesting to have somebody unplug their PS3 and play the vanilla game without a patch to see if the bug occurs.

This backlash was initially criticised too as illustrated by this thread!
It's just a silly joke on reviewer hyperbole don't take it seriously, though hyperbole is a god reason why backlash starts.

I haven't played it yet personally, and it's in all likelihood a high quality game, but it's probably not a metacritic 95 game.

That score made early adopters think that the game was immaculately crafted and would change the world and cure cancer. They were disappointed when they found those statements to not be true.

No, it isnt. Atleast everyone who has been in the OT throughout would say that.
