What's up with all the negativity around The Last of Us now?

Of course not, that's why you should, you know, read the review.

That also makes the user scores so unreliable.

I'm not sure what point you're trying to make. Professional reviews have been called out for widespread corruption and conflicts of interest. There are numerous threads and articles on the subject with input from former journalists. User scores are similarly tainted, albeit for different reasons. So why exactly should I be trusting professional reviews over user score, considering one of them has more consistently matched my opinions?

Called it.

I'm just waiting for the Gamtetrailers/Kotaku/whateversiteyoulike to come with editorials how x about the game sucks after all. Like they magically overlooked certain faults when they gave the game TENOUTTATEN not that long ago.

Happened with Bioshock Infinite as well and with other "block-buster" titles before it.

The negativity is done by a vocal minority. Please, people who are talking about dumb A.I. knows not of what they speak. The A.I. is clearly miles ahead of other stealth games I've played ever. The allies not being detected by the enemies works out in the players favor. You know how much backlash there would be had Ellie be someone that can be seen? TONS. People would complain you can't stealth because "the little bitch keeps getting in the way!" Yea, the a.i. is good.

The negativity also didnt mean the gameplay was bad, it was mostly on the friendly AI.

Surprising the OT doesnt have negativity , such people pointing few issues and people here
concluded

->Gameplay is average -> reviewers were paid -> they dont focus on ai and gameplay -> 95 metactitic are always recieving backlash

What about those opinions in the OT who actually agree with the reviewers and their are plenty of them lol

There's backlash? Where, in the OT? Is it the majority saying those things?

Few people pissed with AI decision and some doesnt find it a perfect game

if anything the backlash solidifies that The Last of Us, a zombie video game developed by Naughty Dog and discussed at length on video game discussion website NeoGAF.com, is without a doubt the crowning achievement of not only the 21st century, but ostensibly of all time.

Not at all. If anything, this thread has taught me that it's not even okay to film an ass in portrait. That's ridiculous cuz sometimes that the better orientation for that type of filming.

Moneyhat time is over, now instead of basing their opinions on PR people can play it for themselves.

It's amazing to see the insane hype/salivating over games before people have played them, it happens every damned time.

LOL at all the blame at the end consumer. Yeah it's totally our fault that game reviewers don't seem to care about AI or gameplay.

Many critics had high praise for the gameplay and AI (read Destructoid and Eurogamer reviews).

Personally, I've played eight hours of it and I can't think of one game with better AI. And it has the most tense and thrilling combat since RE4.

There is no backlash. This is Naughty Dog's best game.

Other than the save bug, I have no idea what you're talking about, OP. Trying to manufacture some backlash where there's hardly any actual complaints?

Sony has money-hatted everyone in the world, of course. Including most of gaf.

Wait... people still trust game reviewers??

I'll decide for myself when I play it this evening. I don't trust review scores but I bought this game day one because of the esteem I hold Naughty Dog in as a developer.

Hmm, I haven't noticed too much of a backlash. The game has a few niggling issues but, overall, it's extremely well designed and beautifully executed. Truly a marvelous experience.

This. Also, there isn't a single game that doesn't have vocal opponents.

I think the game is tremendous. I love the dynamic stealth system they implementend, the closest thing we'll get to a new Manhunt. Really like that predatory gameplay. Of course the writing, acting, attention to detail and music are phenomenal.

Also, some people are painting with broad brush strokes when it comes to professional reviewers. I know a few and can vouch for their integrity.

Misery loves company. This game is like RE4/Gears and Socom on hard crack.

So if majority are agreeing with the reviews so that means the reviewers are not money hatted and just are giving their honest opinions ?

Talk about a backslash?

Besides the autosave glitch, people are complaining about dumb AI, bad graphics, clunky gameplay, repetition and so on.

Where's the catch here? I thought the game was praised universally for a reason.

Still patiently waiting to unbox my copy later tonight.

I don't understand. Are you saying that if people discover problems with the game, they should just keep it to themselves? To what end?

I wonder if this is OP's cunning way to manufacture a backlash. To be sure I had no knowledge of one until I came to this thread.

The AI is definitely bad, I've had enemies just stand in the open doing nothing, I've had enemies run from cover to stand in the open doing nothing. Apart from that it's a good game. Just isn't the 10/10 Citzen Kane of gaming the reviewers said it would be. A solid 8/10 so far (near the end).

I hope you're joking about the AI, it's bad, really bad. I agree on the gunplay though, that is excellent, every gun feels and sounds powerful.

What the hell? The AI's been good from what I've played so far. They take cover, try to flank you and sneak up behind you, etc. I like how they even run away if you're armed and they're not.

I feel like my original theory holds true.

Some studios over the years have cracked the code of game reviewers. Really minor tweaks here and there could turn a 7.5-8.5ish game to a 9 - 10 game.

There also is this sad realization that games with gameplay that feel 9-10 are rarely scored that. The highest rated modern games do tend to have goodish gameplay at best... outside of mario galaxy :P

Pretty sure the high scores for TLOU are more due to the atmosphere and 'feels' over gameplay.

I can't wait for the Beyond: Two Souls internet meltdowns.

Reviewers still have throbbing hard ons for games as movies.

The true gamers out there are starting to get sick of cinematic experiences.

My first meme..

I have yet to play it but..

1. Let people play the game before making brash generalizations OP

2. Play for yourself and form your own opinion. Don't look to cosign others.

Yep the AI is fantastic, not sure what this guy is smoking.

I was playing this a few days ago and I was telling people to curb their expectations. The game starts off slow and really does not show anything off that hasn't been done before in a gameplay idea. 10/10 games either need to do one of two things for me. Either completely re-define a genre/create a new one or be the master of their craft. The Last of Us def falls under the latter. It's just a slow build up and then a rollercoaster ride down to the finish.

Usually when a game gets universal praise its a really good game, but no game is perfect. I mean people out there hate Bioshock infinite, and thats ok. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, I just happen to think it was amazing. It's cool to hate things you know? It's that hipster culture mentality that will make you look go out of your way to find negative things just because everyone else liked it.

Yep the AI is fantastic, not sure what this guy is smoking.

I think the AI is so complex that it sometimes does goofy things.

It's definitely an issue, but one that's easy to forgive. For all the times the enemies do something stupid, there are several instances where they'll do something surprising (in a good way) or smart.

Is there a backlash? I had no idea.

Personally I'm finding it mind-numbingly brilliant - best game I've played in ages and that start... fantastic. Only lightly touched MP so far but it seems interesting from a light dabble.

Some people intentionally tear down whatever is highly praised because they think to themselves, "there's no way it's that good." And so they'll nitpick, find every flaw they possibly can and call the game overrated garbage because of those flaws.

I do it all the time. But it's still early for in depth gamer reviews.

Moneyhat time is over, now instead of basing their opinions on PR people can play it for themselves.

Yep. Same thing happened to Skyrim. Game critics decide to fling out 10s like nobody's business and people start reacting to the scores as if the opinions of the games media has suddenly become anything other than barely relevant.

Thats the point

I'm not talking about the sway and the non-auto aim. I like that. I'm talking about the fact that when I move my right stick there is latency. The delay between moving the stick and the camera/reticule moving throws me off a bit and makes it feel clunky.

People like to over hype major releases instead of approaching it realistically. The auto save issue will be fixed but for now yeah it's a pain to keep pausing my game. Its meeting my expectations so far but I also didn't expect the citizen Kane of video games.

I wouldnt really blame this on the consumer, its the publishers and games media that make them believe this is the second coming of christ.

The only problem with the A.I is that the ennemies don't see your partners. When a game tries so badly to be realistic and impactful in its story/gameplay, seeing your partner run just in front of ennemies, without them even shouting anything, it can be off-putting.
It makes you realise you're still in a game with all the script and shit.

The thing you are filming a video of (your television) is in landscape orientation. This means that it is wider than it is tall.

The thing you are using to film the video is in portrait orientaton. This means that it is taller than it is wider.

Do you think this mix of decisions has lead to the video being as clear as possible?

Go forth brave pioneer of portrait mode, go forth and conquer.

This is just a basic pathfinding error, I can't possibly imagine you or anyone would hold stuff like this against this game [or any other game, for that matter].

Show me one game where this DOESN'T happen.

Nope, not finding fault just reporting my findings. Seems like the enemy characters would have spotted her. Still enjoying the game though.

After 3 hours i'm hardly blown away. Most of that time has been spent following people or just walking through linear environments.

It looks nice and has a good atmosphere and the gameplay is solid enough when it actually occurs, I just really want it to open up.

I know AI ignoring partners is intended, but it's really dumb and noticeable.

Frame rate isn't particularly solid either.

I'll judge it more after I'm done but I can see this being another Bioshock Infinite in that the review scores are way overdone.

Why'd you buy it then? I knew I didn't want a cinematic corridor shootin zombie game so I didn't pick it up. Did you really buy the game off of prerelease hype?

Autosave issue sounds like a good reason to be annoyed, with regard to the game itself not counting the autosave stuff, I suspect it might be a good old getting yourself too overhyped.

You realize that multiple people work for these websites, right? And that it's perfectly reasonable for one writer to love a game and for another to play after release and have issues with it? Just making sure.

I bought it because the gameplay looked good. And it is, I just want a bit more of it that's all.

The characters and their interactions are great, I just think too much time in the first few hours is spent walking through environments doing not very much.

Don't misconstrue my opinion as wanting a crazy shootbang action game!

Watching it on twitch it looks like a shooter with a really bad framerate and unresponsive controls. The reviews made it out to be the second comming.

Because is still desingenous recommend one over another when you are aware of the problems of one and you have personal comfirmation bias.

This happens with every major title. Watch the internet implode when they release the trailer for Last of Us 2 on PS4.

I have no idea what the OP is talking about. Aside from the save-glitch, I've seen no criticisms of the game. Certainly nothing indicative of a "wave of negativity".

It looks bad if you have been playing 1080p PC games. I dont have it in person but its jaggy as hell and has 0 AF so textures blur in the distance. But thats all console games. Besides that it looks great.

Dumb AI might be that he companions don't alert enemies. But would be annoying if they did.

Repetition honestly might be how some play games. I don't understand people who marathon it like 8h per day, ofc it gets boring then.

Most people don't even have the game yet, which means that there's no way that you're really hearing from a large volume of people and yet you're asking about backlash?
