When the next generation consoles are released, will you be get a warranty?

I guess I'm bringing it up cause I'm a little bit bitter...

I got KOTOR 2 for Christmas today and my xbox has been giving me nothing but grief. I've been getting tons of DDE's and disc not recognized messages. It literally took 30 tries just to get to the actual game and then soon after it crashed. I'm so desperate that I'm playing with the xbox upside down which oddly enough makes it work occasionally. :lol No surprises though, its a first gen model with the Thompson drive. I'm so sick of this thing because I can only play one multiplayer map in Halo 2 before it gives me the failed to load the map bs. Don't even get me started on the time when I couldn't play Madden 2003 at all because it literally crashed every time you tried to play a game...And I'm stuck with it cause I'm not paying 100 bucks to get it fixed by MS...

Sorry for ranting but I'm angry over being stuck with a defective product...

I know there is lots of people out there who have been burned by broken or defective consoles and I just want to see what other people will be doing.

To answer the question, I think I'm going to get an extended warranty next time I buy a console instead of chancing it.

In my experience, they always seem to go to waste. I prefer the buy a new one, gut it and swap the innards method.

I'll follow my gameplan from the last couple of generations... get the Nintendo console at launch and get the other systems once they've been out for a while.

Yes, same as me, unless some really great titles are announced for PS3. Then I'd get that first and get a warranty.

Speaking of which, my 1st gen Xbox Thomson drive is still working strong. Am I the only one left in the world?

Nintendo = no
Microsoft = maybe
Sony = definitely

Price also plays into it for me. i didn't get a warranty on my DS, which would've cost $25 but supposedly covered the screen if it got damaged. Nintendo's got really good customer support, and by time something does happen to my DS worthy of repair/replacement, i wouldn't feel bad in shelling out $100 for another unit.

What he/she said. A lack of interest in the software thus far aside, it's also a principle reason why I have no intention of buying a PSP until I feel I need to.

Nintendo = No, their shit never break down on me.
Sony = Yes, after going through 3 PSX and 2 PS2, I be nuts not to.
Microsoft = Yes, the first DVD drive wouldn't read anymore disc so I switch it with the modded Samsung 16x drive.

We get 2 years warranty over here. I think that's enough for me...and I'll probably end up modding my console anyway, so the warranty won't matter after that.

Nope, live in Maine, we have a state law mandating a 4 year warranty on all electronics.

Must be nice, i personally won't be getting one. With damn near anything i buy if it isn't DOA out of the box i typically don't have problems with it *knock on wood*. I am seriously thinking about getting the extended warranty when i pick up a PSP though. Usually the stateside releases are improved over the japanese release hardware but with as many problems as have been cited so far i don't think i'm willing to risk it.

Dont get 'extended' warrantries. You're wasting your money. You should be able to spot problems the first year or so anyway. Most of them have catches too ;)

the thompson drives only seemed to last 3 years. Right when fable came out, the xbox fatality rate shot through the roof. (mine included)

I didn't have any problems in the first year of my xbox's life. I started having problems with Madden 2003 and the first KOTOR which came out like 2 years after I got it. I had problems with Fable too especially when it was loading, just like KOTOR 2.

Normally I don't get an extended warranty with anything I buy but considering all the failures in consoles this gen, I've reconsidered my position.

Same here, thought I was the only one.

Absolutely not for the Nintendo system, and I doubt it for the Microsoft system either. I haven't had any problems with my xbox. I will definitely get a warranty for the Playstation 3 though, and I'll get one for the PSP too.

I have no faith in Sony hardware :/

Waste of money. I've bought extended warranties on playstation, playstation 2, etc. I have never had any console fail on me yet despite the vocal minority with thier "defective" products. I may be tempted at times to return a first gen product for a new revision but then I'm too lazy to go through all the hassle.

Xenon: at launch warrenty
Rev: at launch with warrenty
PS3: when a revision has come out, and will buy warrenty. cant trust Sony's shoddy breakable hardware or their customer service. this has nothing to do with the quality of the games though. i will need a PS3 for all the great Namco games like Ridge Racer and Ace Combat.

Nintendo hardware? No.
Sony hardware? Yep.

I have never purchased hardware warranty before, and now my PS2 is biting it. It'd be much nicer to take it to a store for an exchange than to deal with Sony's customer support in getting it fixed/replaced for free. :(

Revolution: Never. Service Center is too close.
MS: Not even considering a purchase
PS3: Will buy the PSthree, save $150 on the console, $30 per game and enjoy an instant library and bundle without waiting for Ratchet 6.

For my PSP i will be getting a warranty on that and each game that i get for it. Other than that anything with lots of addon's like PS2 i usually get some type of warranty on. So maybe i'll do that for the new Xbox too.

I got a warranty on my DS and had to take it back the next day cause the damn thing fell apart from the bottom. The guts were coming out the bottom it was a nasty day. But i got a brand new one and i was even given a free game for my trouble. God bless you Target.

Microsoft: Yes, although cost will be a factor.
Sony: Yes, cost no factor. Already replaced my PS2 once.
Nintendo: Not likely.

Yes I'll purchase warrantys for the PS3 and Xbox 2. I've seen far too many problems with hardware that is CD based not to-dating back to the Sega CD days. I had 2 Sega CD die on me,2 PlayStations,1 DreamCast,a friend's DC also died on him about a year after purchase,I had an Xbox die 2 months after launch,then had another die 18 months later,then I've seen 2 friends replace theirs as well. So....warrantys are worthless?

Not to me. You either pay up front for a warranty on day one or pay allot more later.

No. Everytime I buy a warranty, two-three months after it expires, my console breaks down. It's poppy-cock!

Actually Kotor 2 gave me that problem too although it wasn't as bad as yours (a simple restart fixes the problem for me) it's annoying.

As for warranties, they are a waste 9 times out of 10 and it's just a way for the retailer to make an extra buck and the employee to get a few bucks in commission. Well that's how it was for me when I worked in a game store.

With Media Play warranties it is for the cost of the system and not the actual sytem which is nice because system prices constantly drop and if u buy a system and it drops in price u get a in store credit for what you paid for the system so u could et a new system and some new games

Any console that only comes with a 90 day manufacturer warranty is suspect.

Any console that comes with a 1 year manufacturer warranty is not nearly as suspect.

That said, I have never purchased a warranty in my life, except on my 2nd PS2, because Sony doesn't know how to build a console that doesn't break.

We get a full years warranty with our consoles in Australia so no need for an extension, still I doubt I will get a launch PS3 I might boycott Sony due to there electrical goods breaking down on me.

Has anyone actually had a Nintendo product that isn't the NES become defective on them?

Edit:
I don't really believe in warranties so i'll bite the bullet with the PS3.
No way I'd get a warranty on a Nintendo product.
Not getting the xenon unless it's totally different from the xbox.

You better believe it. Minimum 2 years with any console I buy. Just part of being an early adopter which I will be for both the Xbox 2 and PS3. I tried bsing myself earlier in the year that I could hold out for better deals and hardware later on, but I won't. The second I see PS3 and Xbox 2 Pre-Orders being accepted at my local EB then I will be right there. Early Adopter 4 Life it appears.

Bingo. That's exactly why I got PRPs on almost everything I bought that qualified for one at Best Buy (not to mention that I help my department's numbers look good :P). Seriously though, Best Buy works much the same way with their PRPs.

Now make sure it's a PRP and not a PSP. No not the sony handheld.

PRP = Product Replacement Plan
PSP = Product Service Plan

With a PSP, you're getting a warranty on the product, and when/if something happens to said product, you can come into any Best Buy and get it fixed at the tech bay/geek squad, and if they're unable to do so, they will send it to an authorized repair center and eat the cost of said repair. The only exceptions to that are if the product has been repaired more than three times (i.e. No Lemon policy) or if the store you take it to decides that it's cheaper to get you a comparable product (of equal or better technology as the warranty states) than it is to repair it.

PSPs are really only worth it on really expensive shit, that's prone to breaking down with regular use, like digital camcorders and iPods. The tough shit comes in when you have to sit around and wait a week for the repair to happen, but at least you don't have to buy another 3-700 dollar piece of equipment again. In any case, IMO it depends on the product and my mood at the time.

Now PRPs, I really like. No hassle, no fuss. Anything happens to your product, you go to the store, you get a new one. Even better, you can go to the store, and get store credit. It effectively works like an extended return policy (although you didn't hear that from me :D). Here's some examples of shit I've done.

Example 1:

Purchased an Olympus Voice Recorder (90 min) with PRP in Nov 2003.
Purchased a PStwo (slim) with PRP in Oct 2004.

I decided I wanted an iPod this month, and realized with a nice adaptor, and the capcity of the iPod, I had a much better recorder on my hands than the Olympus. I also needed a quick influx of cash to make up the bill until my next paycheck, so I used the PRPs to return both the Olympus voice recorder and the PStwo.

Now, the Olympus VR, I bought for ~$70, and I paid $10 for the PRP. So I paid $80, used it for a year (quite heavily I might add), and got $70 out of the $80 back towards the iPod. $10 for a year of use isn't bad.

The PStwo? It was within Sony's 1 year manufacturer warranty. What does this mean? All PRPs state that the PRP may carry over to a new product if the original product being replaced is still under the manufacturer's warranty (as Best Buy will just return said product under the manufacturer's warranty). So, I paid $150 + $20 on the PRP. I got $150 back towards the iPod, and I was able to put the $20 PRP towards the iPod.

End result: $299.99 iPod + $40 PRP - $230 towards the iPod - $20 towards the PRP = $90 iPod + 2 yr coverage.

Second and final example, because this is way too long:

I bought a PRP w/ my DS. Not because I'm careless, or I worry about a Nintendo product (that's laughable IMO), but because I think the price will drop within two years. Paid $150 + $20 for the PRP. If it drops to $100 as heavily rumored, I take advantage of the extended return policy, and pocket $50 in store credit. If I decide to put a new warranty (if necessary, depending on if I returned it within Nintendo's warranty), then it effectively goes down to pocketing $40 as the new PRP on a $99.99 DS would be $10.

Basically, PRPs = Extended Return Policy = Win/Win

Woah, the same thing is happeing to me. I started playing and the thing has froze twice, stopped during a loading screen a couple of time, and froze once during a save screen corrupting the save. Ive had no problems until i started KOTOR2 (Thompson drive though...)

Also, the thing sounds like it's struggling sometimes during loads, and on occasion the speech won't start during cutscenes for a few seconds while the characters just stand there.

I think KOTOR2 is killing my Xbox.

The mini PS2 has a 1 year warranty IIRC.

Sony: Nope
Nintendo: Nope
