Nintendo doesn't need to do anything differently. This does not affect Nintendo since Activision games are not on Switch! Nintendo has massive IP that sells tens of millions. They're fine.

People didn't really play Overwatch on PlayStation anyway. World of Warcraft wasn't on there..... and you can argue and say those games have had better days. The only thing that potentially hurts Sony is COD, but there hasn't been a good COD game in years.

They are big because they are a closed eco system. You cant play switch games on the Wii U. You can play PS5 games on the PS4.

What will change long term? Nintendo still owns dozens of IPS that sell tens of millions. Will they lose those IP? Will the market shift so dramatically that those IP become worth a lot less? I doubt it. Sony might be in trouble, but Nintendo is fine.

Sony bought Housemarque, Bluepoint, Nixxes, Firesprite and teamed up with three new third party studios from ex-Treyarch devs, ex-Bungie devs, and ex-Motive devs/Jade Raymond's new studio.
MS is just playing on a completely different level.
Sony should not overreact and buy Square or Capcom or partner with Ubisoft or EA. They need to go back to the PS3 era strategy of investing in smaller but talented studios like GG, Evolution Studios, Sucker Punch and Insomniac. Then buy them out if they show promise.
$70 billion on a studio that just makes CoD and World of Warcraft is just too much. They can do a lot more with just one billion.

Well, there isn't much Sony can do when Microsoft is overspending on companies.
Sony will just keep doing what they're doing. They're still selling a lot of PS4's, and they're currently killing it with the PS5.... they just need to meet the demand. Sony will still continue to make good games as they have for decades.
Yeah, Game Pass is a solid option.... and will obviously improve in the future. But Sony will put PS Now and PS Plus together and work on getting new IPs. Sony already has a crap ton of exclusive IPs as it is, so they're not worried.

They bought a couple smaller studios they've worked with. They cant compete with Bethesda or Activision sized purchases.

But a shitload of PS players still play new CoD games and up till now it was one of their most important multiplatform IP's next to Fifa. Losing CoD is definitely going to hurt them.
They can't, but I still think they could've done more. Codemasters cost EA a little over a billion and I think they could've afford something of similar size.

I don't think they need to outright buy multibillion $ companies, but if they lose all the big players, like Ubisoft, EA and TakeTwo, they're going to need at least double or triple the amount of exclusives they're releasing right now to even justify being in the hardware space.
It'd be great to see them build that many studios up over time, but I don't think they have the time anymore.

They can still do good if they make great games. If all mainstream games like COD, GTA, fifa is not available it is going to be a small community for sure. May be they can also consider to make clones of these games and try to hire devs who make these games and build their own teams that would be a lot cheaper and take some years though.

Nintendo and Sony are fine in the here and now but I'm talking long-term. Yes, Nintendo has great successful IPs but even they rely on 3rd party software to push hardware. 1st party alone isn't enough.

That's the only title that hurts them, but it won't hurt Sony that much.
Besides, the deal doesn't go through till June of next year, so Sony can still make some moves from that point that could potentially get new customers, especially if they put PS NOW and PS Plus together.

The situation as we stand: With this one move, any dream Sony may have had to ever be to the top dog again is dead...burried for good!
Now, the focus for them would be...well, to survive. To stay viable and make money. They need to acquire at least Square and Capcom, imo...Not to get back at MS, because the Activision deal dwarves them, but to make sure they do not get acquired by Satya...That would be the final blow. Sony may have to shell out 20 billions, sucks for them, but they will have to get that deal sealed.
In the absence of the possibility to do so, go for Capcom and Kadokawa...Anything less and Sony turns to.publishing instead.
Not a fan of either condolidation, or streaming, but this is the beginning of a new age.

If you're asking me, Sony should strengthen its ties with Japanese publishers, ensuring their content is first priority. Capcom, Square Enix, Namco Bandai, KojiPro, From Software etc while also keep building their first party studios. I have no issues with Sony positioning themselves like that, since MS is clearly dealing with mainly western developers and publishers. If Sony also loses out on japanese developers then I would be deeply worried.

Still, COD alone is a huge get.
There are tons of people that buy a console only to play COD.

Before Overwatch got cross play, I never had issues finding matches on PS4. The PS4 was the highest selling console of last gen and Overwatch was a huge seller, so it would be ludicrous to claim people weren't playing the game on it,

One thing that might happen now, is that, this might drive Sony to stop porting over their games. We don't really know how any of this will play out though (everyone here is making calls based on what's happened before in similar situations).
I could be wrong and it doesn't affect me personally but I don't see COD not being on PlayStation. Things are always re-evaluated so what is true now could become untrue later.

So Microsoft did what they usually do, buy companies. So now they have "new" IPs... specifically EXCLUSIVE ones...

Sony is in no way a western company. PlayStation might be largely western these days, but Sony certainly is not. All their other electronics etc are very Japanese.

Sony will have to be more aggressive, as they implied not long ago, about expanding first party. We saw the beginning of this last year. Buying 5 studios in a year was something they've never done before. They need to continue with this. We've clearly heard that they have been throwing money at Square Enix to secure a lot of timed exclusives and pushing to make Final Fantasy a PlayStation franchise for the remainder of the generation. They're going to have to do more. They have been expanding existing studios for sure. Guerrilla, Insomniac, Santa Monica, Naughty Dog, and Firesprite all have anywhere from 2 to 4 projects going. Sucker Punch and San Diego may also be in this boat. Regardless, we know they're growing what they have as fast as they can and before this generation is over we'll likely see just about every Sony studio making multiple games at once.
I know they are loathe to do it, but Sony may have to make a big move here. If Take Two can spend $13 billion on Zynga then Sony can shell out cash to buy something big as well. At this point, an acquisition of Square Enix makes the most sense for them as the companies are already closely aligned. A purchase of Capcom may also be something Sony seriously pursues. It was easy to sit back and hand wave a 7 to 8 billion dollar purchase of Zenimax. A 70 billion dollar purchase of Activision cannot be met with staying the course. Sony will have to spend more money than they probably wanted to but I think they should still be smart about it and not overpay like Microsoft has been doing just for the sake of buying something.
It's not just publishers either. There are still studios out there that Sony should make serious runs at. Bungie, Remedy, Kojima, Arc System Works, and any Warner Bros studio that will almost certainly end up for sale once the transition is complete. Any partnerships Sony currently has should be viewed much more favorably for acquisition. Try to get Haven and Deviation to sell if you like what they're working on. Make a run at Kadokawa who owns From Software. The upshot to all of this for Sony, as we've seen with nearly all of Microsoft's purchases since 2018, is that it is going to take time for the acquisitions to bear serious fruit. This deal cannot even be finalized until some time in 2023. Most of the games currently in development at Activision Blizzard already have PS5 versions coming and post launch content will have to support them. Even a Call of Duty coming in 2024 may still have a PS5 version depending on the timing and what agreements have already been made. Most of the franchises on the Blizzard side of the company are a mess. Any new projects born of this will take quite a few years and some franchises or games just won't mean much in the console space.
This isn't likely to change how this generation was going to end but it will certainly impact how the next one begins. Microsoft is absolutely preparing for that fight and Sony would be wise to arm themselves too.

I know but that road just leads to where the TV/movie industry is right now, and it isn't something I am interested in.
I mean a future where Sony buys EA and you have to buy a Playstation to play FIFA, and Microsoft owns Activision and you need to own an Xbox to play COD, is just stupid, and I don't even play either of those games (well, I was addicted to Warzone for a year, but...). I'll just sit here and continue to play my fan-translated SNES and PSX games instead.

Really though, Microsoft really just paid $70 billion for Call of Duty. Every other IP Activision owns is dying or already dead.
