Is PlayStation no longer doing exclusives?

They no longer own the IP.
Kojima owns the IP. It was only published on PS4 exclusively by PlayStation. 501 Games on PC. The Director's Cut circumvented the exclusivity deal by being named differently even if it is the same game essentially and being a different console generation.

You're missing the point of why I said that.
Oh I got the point - but mine was that this is endemic to 'AAA' industry at large.
If they weren't willing to burn money chasing waterfalls (which happens a lot more than not, even for successes people celebrate) - AAA would not exist - period.
Projects cancellations are a big part of that too (it's usually not that well publicized, but that doesn't mean it's not happening on continuous basis).

Anyway more on point - GaaS bust-cycle has happened 3 times now - and each time multiple big publishers got burned in the process (and it led to plenty of studio deaths along the way). Sony's is the most recent, but it's 15 years since the first, and it definitely won't be the last.
The most disappointing part isn't that 'oh even Sony fell for it' - but the fact that the same mistakes are being repeated time after time again (game industry is nothing if not persistent in its inability to learn from past mistakes).

You're missing the point of why I said that. They sunk billions, created studios, hired and laid off studios and teams, shipped and canned multiple projects and games chasing the GaaS:
• Factions 2
• Concord
• Marvel's Spider-Man online
• Destruction All-Stars
Plus all the ones we don't know about. Instead of doing what they were good at that was sure fire and cheaper money, they burned it on all multiple consecutive gambles like a broke father with a mortgage to pay off hoping to hit the lottery one more time.

I guess it is like a family with a luxurious lifestyle, and now they are struggling to save their money while maintaining their private planes and yachts.

They're chasing money on PC and other platforms. It's only a matter of time before PlayStation exclusives show up on Xbox.

Bad decision on their part. Sony as a company has made catastrophic hardware decisions with their products (e.g., Vaio, Sony Ericsson, Camcorders, Bravia etc.), so I guess it was only a matter of time before they fucked up PlayStation.
Just wanted to reiterate what I saw happening.

I think PlayStation hardware is going in the exact same direction as other Sony products. I hope I'm wrong, but in 5/6 years, I can absolutely see PlayStation being as irrelevant in gaming as other Sony products became in their respective markets.

Hermen Hulst is a terrible leader, and it's only a matter of time before people treat him in the same way people are now treating Phil Spencer. I hope I'm wrong but all signs point to this happening.

I think console players and pc players might be differeniated enough that Sony is not merely splitting its player base. In other words, a pc player may never touch a PS5 and a PS5 console owner couldn't be bothered with PC.

I think Sony is merely catching those players on PC they would have not had on console anyway. I can't even see why the console fanbase is getting upset about this anyway, you get the game first.

Sony is merely mopping up the stragglers/those on the fence who have a PC. I think Stellar Blade proved this.

I don't believe those on PC are going to be converted enough to want a PS6 in the future though if that's a goal Sony has in mind.

I thought Sony was big on exclusives. but now even their new IP isn't exclusive?

what happened?

if Nintendo is the only console still doing exclusives I think we're going to see a bunch of the Switch 2 sell

This is exactly the case. I am one of those people. I've bought every PlayStation, but the PS3 was the last one I was really using a lot.

The crux of the issue is this:
  • A console is a fixed hardware spec, and it has to be fixed at a level that it can be sold to the masses. That means it will always be limited in performance - even if they offer a more expensive Pro model.
  • Some players will always have more money to spend and want the best presentation for their games. The PC offers those players the opportunity.
  • This is especially a factor now because some of the players who started playing PlayStation games when they were kids and teenagers have aged into higher salary brackets where they can spent $1,500 or more on a PC.
I'm one of those people who started moving to PC over a decade ago. Sony managed to get me to buy a PS4 and PS5 specifically with From Software exclusives, but I don't feel good about having bought either of those consoles. They've mostly collected dust.

At this point, I'm not buying a PS6. If Sony wants to try and push me into it with a great exclusive that they don't bring to PC, I'd rather just not play that game than spend $500 on another console. If they want my money, they need to keep bringing their games to Steam. I'm fine with the year long wait for a port.

This isn't a case of Sony not doing enough to keep me on PlayStation. It's a function of me wanting an experience that a $500, or even $700 console just can't provide.
