Which console games does RE4 NOT blow away graphically?

I'm not talking about from an artistic standpoint, because that's subjective.

Which console games best RE from a technical standpoint?

RE4 is a strange game.

Most of the time it looks great. Like interior enviroments. But when you get to outside of the castle the game looks muddy. Plus when you get close to those spouting water fountains the water looks like bad 2d bitmappage.

As for a game that technically looks better: Ninja Gaiden

Well, what's the framerate in RE4? If it's 30 fps, we may have a case here!!! ;)

*runs before reply bomb goes off*

RE4 is the best looking console game I played. The framerate is rock solid also. It's something about the graphics that makes it realistic looking. Many games are better technicaly than RE4, but with more of a plastic look.

Plenty.

RE4 strays from using any DX8-style (or better) rendering effects for the most part while running in 16-bit color at 30 fps...

There are plenty of XBOX titles that are more technically advanced. RE4 certainly has solid technology to back itself up, but most of the visual brilliance is the result of artistic talent.

It's a similar situation with Gran Turismo 4 versus a number of other XBOX racers. Those XBOX racers tend to feature 4-5 times the amount of geometry per car, superior textures, perpixel lighting effects, cubic environment maps, etc...

Yet, GT4 still manages to look better than almost all of them in motion...

I think the rocky surfaces you walk on and beside look much better than those in Ninja Gaiden. Also, water is much more convincing in RE, and certainly more interactive. Character models are better in Ninja Gaiden, as is animation. And of course the lighting is superb in just about any top tier Xbox game. But in RE4, there's great use of lighting and weather, whereas nothing really pops out at you in Ninja Gaiden. (except maybe the monastery)

The lava in RE4 definitely looks 10x better, and the giants look as good as some of the monsters in Ninja Gaiden. (like that ice monster in the caverns
[/spoiler]

it has begun...I knew people would slam RE4's graphics. RE4 deserved to be praised for it's great realistic look, lightning, particle and fire effects. Also props for a solid framerate.

MGS3 tie.

Riddick is okay but its technical flaws; graphical oddity + slowdown + screen tearing brings it down a notch imo.

I think NG looks pretty ordinary. Never understood the love. Brown Ninjas.. white ninjas... meh. I don't think the genre was for me.

Artistic standpoint? Sure - Panzar Dragoon Orta,Ninja Gaiden, and of course Phantom Dust just to name a few and all for xbox :D

"Blow away"? Many games. "Beat" graphically? A handful, at best.

Silent Hill 3 looks better than RE4 right? (I haven't played RE4)
That's a strange assumption to make, considering. I would say no.

MGS3 is a beautiful game (sometimes more attractive than RE4 ever gets), but no.

In My Opinion RESI 4 is the most impressive game technically and artistically the generation. The direction of the game with quality lighting and directing also blows 99% of other game out of the water. Even if I play again Resi 4 again in 5 years time I believe it will still have the special feel it had the first time I played it.

It’s up there with the like of OOT, GoldenEye and Metal Gear Solid. Time doesn’t tarnish greatness. :)

But it deserves it...

Yes, and you know damn well it has received TONS of praise. It does deserve it, but it is not perfect. The 16-bit artifacts are downright awful, the framerate is NOT perfect (30 fps with minor slowdown), and some areas are a bit rough (external castle areas, for instance).

Taking both art and technology into consideration, I DO think it is one of the best looking games ever made (and one of the best games period), but it is not flawless. While I do not prefer the art style, Ninja Gaiden's visual package is much more complete. Higher color depth and framerate, more complex models and textures, and polish in virtually every corner of the game. It's about as flawless as visuals get on current consoles.

But fanboy wars aside it deserves it. RE4 is an impressive achievement by capcom.

Oh, I didn't say it wasn't an impressive title. It's one of the best looking console games out there.

Yes I agree, but no game is graphicly flawless this generation.

EDIT: I haven't noticed any slowdowns so far.

I think Resident Evil is the overall best-looking game this generation, considering both technology and artistic merits. However, it IS flawed. The framerate does slow down occassionally, but the biggest problem has to be the clipping that occurs. This fault isn't only a cosmetic bruise, it can also be slightly detrimental to the gameplay.

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiidick!!!

But not Ninja Gaiden. That game looked like shit. Plastic characters running around. Gimme a break.

You're shitting me if you actually believe that

RE4 would be the best if it actually used real spectral lighting. The models and environments are astounding. Accurate lighting is its only bane.

Lighting in RE4 is texture. there is no lighting like Riddick, SC3 etc.

Technically RE4 is not even in the top 10. But it looks great. By far best of this generation but its wierd. I think it looks shitty sometimes. And the lack of even bullet holes bother me. It's a pretty game untill you actually start looking at the detail.

I'd have to check again, but I think Ninja Gaiden runs at 60 fps, while RE4 runs at ~30fps. Both games look similar, tho I'd say RE4's fire effect owns.

Resident Evil 4 has some inconstant graphics going on. Looks amazing in some places, and terrible in others. So far I'm at chapter 3-2, and the castle enviroment doesn't blow anything away. It's riddled with flat polygons consisting of muddy photo-referenced textures.

Everything prior to the castle looks AMAZING.

Oh, and btw, the best looking game this gen on a console is RE0 (or Remake).

No. Not only prerendered, but not very impressively prerendered when compared to REMake. Besides, the game is unplayable.

Who gives a shit if it's pre-rendered,the question was which game looks the best. Riddick doesn't look the best, the art is craptacular, it's just boxes here and there. RE0/1 are very playable and what does that have to do with graphics anyway?

i think re4 is the best looking console game to date, but there are dozens of games it doesn't "blow away." mgs3 is very nearly its equal. and from a strictly technical perspective, the 60fps ninja gaiden is its clear superior.

I asked which game was technically better, not which looked better. Read the thread. Otherwise, art comes into play and everyone picks Wind Waker/ZOE2/Wanda/etc.

Speevy, technically Re4 isnt that great at all. Other than some bump mapping its all pretty simple.

MGS3 probably has more reflection effects and physics going on.

How exactly can a game look good technically? Wait you're not talking about graphics. What exactly are you asking for, technical in which area? more polys? more mapping features? better lighting?

You can take a piece of shit and apply 10 million graphic effects on it, but it will still be a piece of shit. A game like Riddick has lots of technical stuff going on, but because there's no art direction in the game, in 5 years, it will look like shit. Whearas a game that doesn't use many techniques but has good art direction, say Metroid Prime 2, will always look good.

RE4 really uses bump mapping?
