Which game sequels make the first game almost obsolete?

I'm talking about game sequels that improve so much almost making the first game irrelevant to play, to the point that some players might even prefer to skip the first game and go directly to the superior sequel.

Here's some examples:

Megaman2_box.jpg

Mega Man 1 < Mega Man 2

Probably one of the most obvious examples in all of gaming, almost the entire Mega Man community agrees that Mega Man 2 is one of the best if not the best in the series and on contrast Mega Man 1 is seen as one of the worst if not the worst.

Rogue Legacy 1 < Rogue Legacy 2

One of many examples amongst Indie games of this phenomenon, Rogue Legacy 2 is so vastly superior in pretty much every aspect compared to the first game that I honestly don't see why anyone would ever go back to the first game.

What other games can you guys think of?

Rallisport Challenge 2

The only caveat is that the first game is available on PC, but the sequel isn't. But otherwise, RSC2 is better in every single way than the first game.

Left 4 Dead 2: It includes all the campaigns from the Left 4 Dead 1, plus more weapons, infected types, and gameplay modes. And better community support.

If there's a reason to play 1 over 2, I'd have to be convinced.

Doom 2, Doom Eternal, Halo 3, Unreal Tournament 2004, Myth Soul Blighter 2, Mass Effect 2, Baldurs Gate 2, Time Crysis 2, Soul Calibur which was a sequel to Soul Blade, Resident Evil 2, Sonic Adventure 2, Power Stone 2

Isnt Dragon's Dogma 2 supposedly the version of the original game that the creator always wanted to make with a better budget?
Yeah, supposedly lol. :goog_relieved:

Game is, once again, obviosuly unfinished with many cut corners. Some bad things from the first game are still there, like the poor balance and lack of difficulty, while some others are worse, like having less equipment slots or some spells for the mage classes being missing. And the music is worse.

Imo it improved the combat a bit, and the world is way bigger. Aside from that the game is more of a sidegrade rather than an upgrade.

Doom 2, Doom Eternal, Halo 3, Unreal Tournament 2004, Myth Soul Blighter 2, Mass Effect 2, Baldurs Gate 2, Time Crysis 2, Soul Calibur which was a sequel to Soul Blade, Resident Evil 2, Sonic Adventure 2, Power Stone 2
I don't know how you can say Halo 3. It rebalanced the game, had a different campaign, etc. For me Halo 2 was the best experience, it had online at a time when it was a little janky, but in a way I loved.

Halo 1 - 3 all have their own charm and a different balance to weapons.

Funny my ass my dude, I was hyped to hell and back. :lollipop_pensive:

But hey, at least we got DDON back as consolation prize.
I mean I paid the Premium you got robbed price and got 140+ hours out of it but the game is underwhelming compared to DD1 even before it became DDDA. UGH SO DISAPPOINTING

I expected more from the Producer who got a bigger budget and made a worse game....but I think he did that on purpose.

That said even in it's incomplete state DDON is leagues better.

I find DDDA is the reverse example in this thread. You play DD2 and then you play DD1/DDDA and you just can't go back.

You are just all

It was weird. The first few days were people so hyped for the game like it was the evolution of action RPG's. I'm still waiting for that huge discount.
I think the game is good...just not great. The way the game just ends felt like they gave you half of what you should have.

The real kick in the face is how they celebrated the anniversary with a PNG Overlay so you can make a lame wallpaper.

mass effect 2, for most people...
mass effect 1 is kind of different, and more to RPG than shooter, although using almost the same mechanic, it's different.
I like both though...

Seriously guys? No one is going to mention it?

>same map, but with better exploration
>verticality sucked, so we are giving you "Ascend"
>weapon durability sucked, so we are giving you "Fuse"
>dungeons sucked, so we are giving you actual dungeons now.

It's basically BOTW remade. So much better than the original in pretty much every way, making the original feel like a tech demo.

Going from TOTK to BOTW is rough.

Assasins Creed 1 after 2 is still great: different characters, story, map, gameplay. Same for so many other mentions here, like Uncharted. Sure 2 looks much better than the first, but 1 is still a lot different.

Not a single one of these (well, UT04 and maybe power stone 2) made the last one obsolete. These are just different games.

Considering only the PS1 era of Tekken, Tekken 3 would be a candidate (but T2 has a different vibe, T1 is borderline unplayable compared to the other two).

Other examples: Wipeout XL, Ridge Racer 2(PSP), Outrun C2C, Dota 2, Portal 2, CS2 (1.6 has a nostalgic effect, source and GO nop), usually the latest version of Civilization, after 2 or 3 expansions. Test Drive Unlimited 2...

XCOM 2012 is a great game, but I'm not sure I'll ever play it again now that XCOM 2 exists.

XCOM 1 (the new one) didn't even make the 92 original obsolete.
XCOM 2 on the other hand is GOAT Strategy material.

I'm one of those weirdos who MASSIVELY prefers Mass Effect 1 over 2 or 3. But I'm also a sucker for a good RPG. I usually resolve myself to playing through the entire trilogy, and then give up halfway through 2. The first game was one of my favorites of the Xbox 360 generation though.

Hard disagree on this one. The original had, I thought, much better powers / abilities. The dungeons were fine, for me at least, and exploration felt a lot more natural. Tears of the Kingdom, and it's weird "let's glue a bunch of parts together and solve physics puzzles" got on my last fuckin nerve - in fact I think this is the only Zelda game I completely gave up on halfway through out of sheer frustration.

You are right about weapon durability sucking though.

Nioh 2. Gameplay and challenge-wise It has everything that Nioh 1 has plus more stuff.

Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven. Its the best Tenchu game.

White Knight Chronicles 2. It includes the first game and adds to it the new mechanics from the sequel.

Imo powers sucked so much in BOTW compared to TOTK. So boring. Having 2 slots for 2 types of the same bomb shows that they werent being very creative. TOTK powers were much more useful.

And exploration can still be "natural" if you want to. Just dont use the powers for traversal and you'll have the same BOTW experience.

I also thought shrines were much more fun than in BOTW.

People tend to say they love BOTW more due to the game's vibes. And thats fair. But in terms of mechanics the sequel blows it out of the water.

Having the same freaking map reforces my opinion of it becoming obsolete. Hardly we have sequels using the same map (Yakuza, I guess)

It doesnt help that BOTW's story is almost non existent. So you are mainly playing it for the gameplay/exploration, and you can have the same or better experience in TOTK.

Soundtrack, legacy, and general gameplay balance favor the first. Also there is no reason to spam low kicks against CPU unlike in VF2.

TimeSplitters 2 as the first is just a bunch of FPS maps with objectives and unmemorable characters.

P.S. I second Tekken 2 and Street Fighter 2.

Doom 2 had some major regression when it came to level design. In saying that, this is a subjective topic, so you do you.

Nah, first game has way better level design.
Why do you always choose to be my enemy?

SNES Dragon Ball Z 2 was on another level from the first part that played like a tank simulator (maybe there was input lag back then). Also we went from this:

To this:

(I know it doesn't looks like much but back then it was almost a generational leap, specially in movement).

True, I could actually never go back to Breath of the Wild after playing this. In a lot of ways it actually make BotW look bad in comparison.
This is a pretty unique case for Zelda games especially, cause like I could always go back to pretty much all of them and enjoy them (except Skyward Sword, game is trash).

Expedition 33 is so good, I don't even remember playing the first 32 games.
