Why all the console hate?

Normally my opinions are reserved to all things zombie and hockey related, but with the news about the new Nintendo controller and MGS4 and the reception they both got, I wondered: Why all the console hate?

I don't understand the bitterness some people feel towards certain consoles. I own a Genesis, Dreamcast, GameCube, PS2, X-box, yet I somehow don't feel the bile to hate on one system or another. Shouldn't we as gamers be generally pleased that there are multiple systems?

I'm not trying to start shit up; I am generally perplexed by the anti-sentiment towards various consoles. I suppose it would make sense if everyone was employed by Nintendo, Microsoft, or Sony, or had some stock or other financial interest, but I know that's not the case.

I don't want to piss anyone off, I'm just trying to sasiate my curiosity. Thanks. I'll go back to the OT now.

Youre a sports fan right? Well this is no different... People love to trash talk the other team or console and in some cases beat up each other. We arent at the beating each up level yet but I can see this happening in a distant future. Gang wars lol....

IMO, one simple answer is:

People who can't afford to buy all the consoles need to justify and rationalize their decision and do that through attacking the systems they don't own.

There are others of course (blind loyalty, etc.) but too long to list..

No hate here. I'm pumped as fuck for both PS3 and Rev. TGS basically pushed me over the edge to the point that I'm buying a PS3 at launch. Holy shit that thing is going to be awesome.

The truth

People either define themselves by their differences to others, or to their commonality to others, but rarely both.

Bingo.

I think that's exactly it. That's the root cause of fanboyism.

On behalf of all of those with no desire to own either a Phantom or a Gizmondo, I say BOOOOOOoooo :(

This is actually the truth. Finances probably has very little to do with it, except as another small tactic in provoking those who disagree with others. It's total bullshit, but it certainly isn't limited to game consoles. Haven't you ever met an idiot who argued childishly over car brands? or philosophy/religion? or on and on whether petty or not?

People are looking for a self-identification and they do it in the ways they have open to them. I'd say you could further presume certain things about people in relation to the vehemence they argue such things, but my guess is there are people who post at GAF that act as total fucktards that are quite normal in everyday life. Likeable even.

And a fair number who are not.

People do not like the unfamiliar. You can see it in ethnocentrism, where the world comes to be defined by your people, and the 'others'. You can see it in politics, where there is your party/beliefs, and the 'others'. And you can certainly see it on these boards - there's what you know and are comfortable with, and then there is the 'other' which threatens it (in this case more literally due to competetive free markets).

Plus, people like simplicity. It's easy to label people for simple categorization, and we LOVE to do that here. Got an XBox? You are defined by it. Ditto with the other two. Have multiple? People will seek to associate you with one of them, because that kind of complexity is too much for the spam-tastic responses that populate most discussions.

You sir, embody the spirit of a true OmniGamer.

Seriously though...pot shots here and there are ok(Sony hardware failure jokes, DRE, etc...XBOX's gargantuan size, Ninty's stubborn old-fashion ways...until Rev that is)...but this constant bitching and trolling gets very trite VERY fast.

And don't bring up affordability...I've been in my most broke state this current gen. I was working and able to get my PS2 no problem(had a Dreamcast also)...I was able to get a Gamecube in early '02. I didn't want an XBOX at first, but i've never hated on it, even though I couldn't afford one...Eventually I wanted to get one, and I JUST got one(literally...just got it last wednesday!).

The mindset is so grade school...and really, the last time I acted like that was in...grade school! I remember vividly being a diehard Nintendo fan, hating any and all things Sega...eventually the pull of Sonic got to me, and I wanted to get a Genesis, and ever since Dec. 1993(I believe), I've been a multiplatform gamer.

I play games not systems. Having a kickass time with Wipeout and Tekken and Street Fighter Alpha and Twisted Metal and Crash Bandicoot on Playstation, didn't make me want Super Mario 64, Waverace and Mario Kart 64 on N64, or NiGHTS, Virtua Fighter 2, Nightwarriors, and Guardian Heroes on Saturn any less.

Sure, I have my likes and dislikes with each system, but really...it's just not that serious.

It ultimately comes down to money, yea.

For those of us who can't afford excess, we try to defend our actions/choices by lashing out at the options we did not take.

Makes us feel better about our purchases, which then utlimately reflect our own decision making capabilities, and thus our own pysches - it is an internal rationalization to prove to ourselves we are capable of making the correct - and best - decisions for ourselves.

So, fundamentally, console bashing is all psychological...
If we can't have it all - most can't - then in order to be pycholigcally content, we have to bash what we don't own so we can sleep at night. Psychological harmony. Yin and yang. Light and dark. Darwin shit. Etc.
Not that I do that anyway.

But yup. That is it. Lock thread.

:lol it's true otherwise there would be more topics on actual impressions and gameplay instead of 2 million topics on speculation and baseless comparisons

Note that my comment on affordability wasn't aimed at rational people like yourself. My general point was that some people who decide not to get a system for one reason or another (affordability being one reason) feel they need to justify their choice.

I like the term OmniGamer, by the way.

EDIT: Also, the motto for OmniGamers could be "I play games, not systems" as stated above

QFT.

Seriously though, I myself am also a multi-console owner as well, but I'll occasionally spit some fire towards a platform now and again. I mean if I don't own a console, there's a darn good reason why. I think it's just because online, the lack of inflexion (sp?) makes it difficult to tell someone's intention when they state something. They may be saying it sarcastically or playfully, but to anyone reading it, the comment comes across as serious and malicious.

Can't we all just get along? :lol

i own lots of consoles too, and i find that some of them are great while others are kinda shitty! it's great that you like all of your consoles more or less equally. but this is at best your idiosyncratic opinion and at worst an empty platitude, and i'm not sure why you expect everyone to agree with you.

There are people who love winners and hate losers.

Then, there are counter people who resent winners and cheer for the underdog.

Then, there are counter-counter people who hate counter-people that cheer for the underdog.

That money argument is true sometimes, but I know plenty of 2- or 3-console owners that hate or love one of the video game companies.

We are alike my friend but you are looking too deep. Some enjoy riling up fanboys...others are fanboys..and still others don't know why they hate...

Console Hate? What about Console Love?

We had so many great memories together but now I have found a new love and must pack you up for a trade in value. At least we'll always have backward compatibity so you'll never be far from my heart. :)

Why are you leaving me Dreamcast? No please don't go. What about the us? What about Shenmue II???

I think it's just for people to feel right... to justify their purchase and brand loyalty.

for someone to come along and say... "your system sucks!" is an insult to your sense of taste... and people will defend it to the end. Bringing in a whole bunch of pointless numbers, watching sales numbers (the feeling of people buying "your" system... proving that others agree with your opinion), etc. etc. etc.... It's all to feed people's ego.

me... i dont care... i like games... fuck the consoles.

Arguments can be quite entertaining at times and that's what often drives just about any hobby. If everyone agreed at all times things would become rather dull here. Of course, some people approach this in a manner that can become annoying...but what is annoying to one person may not be to another, so whatever...

I guess I just kinda side with the one that has provided the most entertainment, but that doesn't mean that I don't enjoy them all. I own all current machines, but I do have preference. I'm not a big fan of the DS, for example, but I own one for the games that I wish to play. It's never been about money for me.

Though, that might be an issue in some cases. It is in those cases that I believe the "trolling" becomes much less interesting. A lot of the least mature forums out there are filled with people who own just one platform and they refuse to give anything else a chance. I just can't respect an argument that doesn't have experience with everything that is under examination. When I end up in an argument, I will have taken a look at all sides that could be presented.

They think it's entertaining.

I agree with these points. Especially the bolded section last.

It's like the whole gang violence thing.

Xbox guy said Gamecube is a kiddie system and that angered Gamecube guy.
So, PS2 guy who also likes Gamecube guy decided to get revenge by saying something like "the only good game Xbox has is Halo." Then Halo guy who also likes Xbox guy and knows Dreamcast/Nerd guy hires the old SegaGang to post numbers proving how powerful the Xbox is. Nerd guy goes on to say that PS2 is so weak it can't even render a kiddie Gamecube game. Then GamerTroll here's the conversation and decides to send misinformation to PS2 guy. GamerTroll tells PS2 guy that Gamecube guy told him he thinks the PS2 can't even render Super Monkey Ball. MGS2 guy overheard the whole thing and sets out to prove the PS2 is capable of great graphics by posting really crapy screen captures of MGS2. Xbox guy pokes fun at the captures and is told to use the word jaggies. PC guy laughs and says PC games dont have jaggies and all consoles are weak.

And it just never ends.

My solution would be to allow 3D Hentai games on all three systems.
Or possibly create an MMORPG cyber sex/chat sex game where all the consoles could play together and each console recieved different sets of downloadable skins for the characters.

It all boils down to immaturity. If someone has to validate(to themselves? others?) their purchase of one console by bashing another one, as supposedly "natural" a reaction that might be, it's just sad.
