why did Star Wars even get big when 2001 came out 9 years earlier

and was just as mind blowing

why exactly did Star Wars blow up as a cultural phenomenon when 2001 came out 9 years earlier and was just, if not, more insane

I'm not trolling it doesn't make sense to me

2001 is just as mind blowing as the origianal Star Wars....watching that in 1968 must of been surreal

You don't understand how the light hearted, fun-for-all-the-family, space action adventure movie was a box office smash while the glacial, obtuse, mind bending Kubrick picture with no straight answers wasn't?

The only people who watched 2001 in theatre and enjoyed it were druggies who timed their high to the trippy part at the end. It is only recently that such slow paced, dull and self-indulgent movies are seen as being good.

I don't remember ever seeing a 1cm by 4cm by 9cm toy Monolith... neither toy spaceships or action figures for it.

there's your answer.
2001 had a way more limited target audience.
less action, less fantasy spectacle, nothing in it for kids etc.

Both films are brilliant but target different audiences. I wish most people would understand that Star Wars is a fucking KIDS MOVIE! Always has been. Always will be.

Star Wars is a fantasy movie in space setting. 2001 is a sci fi mystery.

Star Wars is knights and wizards and smugglers. 2001 is a bunch of nerds. And not cool nerds like me but real nerds.

What makes you say that? 2001 was the second highest grossing film of the year it came out and one of the highest grossing film of the 60s. Obviously Star Wars was a whole other level of success but it’s not like 2001 went unnoticed until recently.

They saw it, but did they enjoy it? When we look back at the film and say that it was purely understood as total genius at the time and a great film, we have to understand this is confabulation. To many people at the time, it was very boring and made by people too busy being impressed by their own intelligence to make a good film.

The bad movie takes on GAF reach another level.

Why do you think the space adventure aimed at kids with pew pew lasers and a giant bear did a lot better than the heavily philosophical, slow paced meditation on human development, aimed at adults?

Star Wars is fantasy sold as sci-fi, so it appeals to a very large base.

Also it didn't hurt that they cast Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford, arguably the most attractive actors on the planet at the time.

Wrong.

It's the good vs evil story. Then lightsabers followed by the good looking spacecraft, giant bears, pew per lasers, Han solo

A little of Luke, but not much.

Can You Imagine What SureAI Is Going To Do With Garfield?
2001 is a cerebral, thought provoking science fiction. Movies that are similar to that are Contact, Interstellar and Arrival.

The reason those movies don't have toy lines and are popular is because they're not a space fantasy. Star Wars is more in the league of Buck Rogers or Flash Gordon. It has funny looking aliens and lasers and space magic and all sorts of things that appeal more to families or kids.

Star Wars was a beautiful amalgam of samurai movies, fantasy, spaceships and optimism. It was filled to the brim with great characters, exciting events and humorous moments.

2001 was:

Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.
2001 did amazing things, and it was a great film, but it was not fun. At least not for an average person. It's hard to digest and it was pretty boring, most of it.

Star Wars is more popular because it is about a war in the stars. George Lucas created sky walker named Luke Skywalker to save a hot lay named Leia on a deadly star named the Death Star. Leia has been imprisoned by Luke Skywalker’s dark father, Darth Vader. And with the help of a feisty loner, Han Solo and his animalistic sidekick chewie, as well as instruction in a mysterious force known as the Force from a guru named Obi Wan Kenobi, he is able to succeed.

How could this not be successful? It is obvious.
