Why does the PSX hype seem muted compared to last year?

Hey all,

So this is something that I've been wondering about over the past week; the hype for the conference (which starts in 4 hours) is much less than last years.

I mean last year's threads had over 632 pages, 30,000 replies, and over 3 million views combined over the two pre-PSX threads, with wild predictions and Adam Boyes making a poem, and then another 254 pages, 12000 replies and 1.3 million views for the actual conference OT thread.

Is it that people learned their lesson by not hyping up the conference to unrealistic expectations only to inevitably get set up for disappointment? Is it because the E3 of dreams already delivered? Do people want to get their expectations in check? What's the definitive reason?

Even unrealistic expectations aside, the level of engagement still seems lower with less people talking about it.

[EDIT] Yep, as someone said, there seems to be a lot less "insiders" too compared to last year + people thought it was a one-off conference.

I mean I guess you do have Drac making a return with another hilarious post. He's the same guy who made this post last year.

Because there was a bunch of overhyping last year that is thankfully not so bad this year. Last years was a good show, hopefully this one will be too

Yes we had the E3 of dreams. I can't really think of one possible dream announcement. Plus no real teasing.

Last year it was a new thing,

Not as many leaks.

We saw what kind of reveals were last year and perhaps expectations are set to a realistic level?

We'll say maybe

That people actually fell for the hypetrain in all seriousness last year to the point of massive, massive disappointment was honestly bewildering.

Because nothing will happen. Except for a MG1-2, MGS1-4, PW Fox Engine Remake Bundle being made available today for less than the price of Ground Zeroes.

Because E3 already delivered on the megatons and people don't know what to expect.
Also it's better this way, last year the event was way overhyped.

After Sony's E3 this year and even their showing at Paris games week, I look at it and I think that most of their big announcements have already been made. At least as far as in development games go. I know They have a few studios with unannounced games, but I feel like at this point those games will be 2017 at the earliest.
Sony's E3 this year was like fanfiction with the FF7 remake, TLG, Shenmue 3 etc, so I just look at it and feel like it will be tough for PSX to top that.

I know this isn't the case but someone could misinterpret this as a stealth concern troll thread.

I do believe you answered your own question though. I think E3 was everything and more for a lot of PlayStation fans, so people are probably not even sure what else sony can do at this point. I myself am 100% certain sony has a few more surprises up their sleeves

Sony delivered in all three conferences: E3, TGS, Paris. People are really tired of being delivered.

Lol. Um sony can you please stop delivering? We're exhausted.

Expecting something on the PGW scale, which was actually solid for big name reveals like GT Sport and Detroit. I wouldn't be surprised by Sony Bend's horror game opening and God of War 4 closing. Sucker Punch's new project could be revealed, but I'd expect E3 for that.

E3 happened with FF7, TLG, and Shenmue 3. Also last years PSX, Gaf was exploding with "insider" knowledge about there being 3 MEGATONS and oh wait for it...1 GIGATON. My expectations are still very high for this years PSX but no where near last years.

1.)Sony's 2015 E3 conference was arguably the greatest E3 conference of all time.
2.)The hype from last year went absolutely nowhere.

So, I think it is just checked expectations. PSX is a good addition to Sony's lineup of conferences but it just isn't a massive E3 level show. It is a cool end of the year show that puts a period on the current year while giving us a glimpse of what is to come.

No need to take it any further than that.

"Why don't people have unreasonable expectations this year, guys"

Well that's not really my question lol; I just wanted to see what people thought the main reason why the "hype" was much more muted. Unrealistic expectations aside, the level of engagement still seems lower with less people talking about it. I guess the person below you made a good point regarding people thinking it was a unique one off conference.

Partially because some stuff has already leaked. Partially because the PS2 emulation news is so divisive. The PS2 news has taken a lot of wind out of the conference for me.

We had many great Sony showings this year and some really insane announcements for PS4. Especially Sony's E3 showing was like those forum parodies in a way. And that recent Paris show had some neat stuff as well. And then there was also the true PS-VR reveal. If Sony has some insane stuff in te pipelines, I expect them to save it for when the PS4 hype calms down, they probably want to have some surprises next year as well.

I am kind of saturated in my hype levels for the coming year. I honestly do not expect any megatons. Nor do I need them, as I am content with this years announcements. But I do look forward to seeing some of the games we know are coming! And any surprise is welcome, offcourse.

Not every show needs to have ridiculous hype, just seeing more of what gaming will bring us in the coming years is enough for an enthousiast like me, especially since we have had plenty megatons already. Hell, even Psychonauts 2 just a few days back blew my mind.
