Why is prepping for coronavirus being mocked?

It's okay, GAF. I got mocked a little by just about everybody I know IRL when I advised my family that we should stock up a little on a few things (toilet paper, dry goods, canned foods) just in case of unexpected consequences of the virus spreading. I wasn't recommending that we become preppers. I just think it's a good idea to be able to last a few weeks without having to go to the store. When over half the store's staff are sick, do you really want to be waiting for up to 45 minutes in the only available check out line for a pack of TP?

Everyone brushes this thing off because it's less deadly than the flu, but I don't think they realize the effects of something that spreads so easily and quickly. Good luck protecting your parents and grand parents from this thing, and when it comes time for dear old grandma to need a doctor, she's going to die waiting to see one most likely. Get used to it, GAF. The long road is ahead.

You should always have 2 weeks worth of basic supplies anyway. That's not even really "prepping", just being smart.

The only valid reason to hoard toilet paper is to resell at profif when the real panic sets in.

Fuel for the generator, a sack of rice, and a dozen tins of various vegetables on the other hand ...
is something you should ALWAYS have at home in case the next cyclone will shut down the roads and leave you isolated for a week without power and the roads flooded.
He does have a point, my house of 4 was down to 3 rolls earlier because of the shortage :messenger_tears_of_joy:

I just don‘t get it.

I thought this thread was about people mocking coronavirus prep like the thread title says, OK mod :/
Who are you to tell me what threads I can post in or not

This. If everyone were sensibly buying a few extra of the long lasting items they always buy anyway, most people wouldn't give a shit.

It's the nut jobs panic buying, doing moronic insanity like filling shopping trolleys with toilet roll and screaming at each other, that are the problem, both because their overreaction makes any preparation look slightly irrational by association, and inconveniencing normal people who just want to wipe their arses and now can't.

It is. What does your post have to do with mocking coronavirus prep?

Whining your way out of a thread and then linking to that thread elsewhere is just plain cowardly.

Wow, you are really salty about that thread.

The OP didn't do anything wrong. He didn't buy a thousand rounds of toilet paper or punch someone over hand sanitizer. Not sure why you think he belongs here.

This thread isn't about mocking people for prepping, it's about the stupidity of people having flippant attitudes about corona

It's nice to stock up on some dry goods and other foods. The toilet paper thing is fucking retarded. If you're one of those people filling up carts with toilet paper, you deserve to be mocked.

Sosokrates

Report me if I continue to console war
Lots of people Buying in bulk means supply chains are messed up, it creates panic when its not necessary, its so fucking dumb.

I dont think prepping is dumb, but theres smart ways to do it over time.

A bunch of normies see some dumb shit on the internet/media then go and buy 50 toilet rolls and canned foods is just retarded.

I want to know where all these dumbass people got the idea that they need to do this.

The only need to prep would be to self isolate, and even then that person could get a friend or family to leave groceries by there door or use the delivery service nearly all food stores have.

Prepping only makes sense if you do it right, for people who live in places where natural disasters happen, 2 weeks worth of food and eater is needed.
If this was a serious outbreak like the movie "outbreak" then 12 months of food, water, fuel for fire, candles, batteries, medical supplies, re-enforcing your home, guns needed for protection would be necessary. Something similar would be needed if nuclear war broke out but in that scenario you would also need a bunker with air filtration systems which can protect you from the radiation.

I used to think that serious preppers were over doing it, but this corona virus has shown me that if this flu like virus can cause so much chaos, prepping seems like a good idea.
Having a few weeks supply probably wont be enough in most situations.

A bunker, or some very remote cabin with a year supply of supplies seems like a good idea.

I take it you don't live in an area where a snow flake in the forecast causes all the milk and bread to magically disappear from store shelves?

People heard on the news that toilet paper and other necessities were sold out at all of the Seattle area Costcos. That's why the rest of the country began stockpiling suddenly.

My reason for wanting to stock up a little was that I had had the thought that we might skip a grocery trip if things got especially strained at the stores. I guess everyone else is now thinking the same.

We've been told to avoid large crowds and close contact with other people. So what are people doing with this advice? Crowding around the toilet paper and hand sanitizer.

Honestly, I wonder why don't stores just take orders and deliver it to people's cars?

You know, like those old drive-in restauraunts? Girls would deliver your food on skates so you didn't have to leave it.

Then it should be made mandatory during pandemics like this one.

Or have people go to the entrance, the employee fetches the product and then hands it to them. Instead of hundreds of people touching and bumping everyone inside.

Can someone explain the toilet paper?

I mean, it’s like, tsunamis of people rushing and buying them in droves. More so than food or water.

I just don’t get why?

Because it's a flu with the addition that it is contagious.

So far everyone who died from it, is pretty much either really old/young and/or has no proper functioning immune system.
These people would die from a regular flu too.

I don't mock it, but I do think its highly exaggerated

Well a flu has a 0.1 CFR and this has anywhere from 2-3% CFR.
If it is just a flu, it is a flu that can kill 20 times more ppl than your flu can if if is not controlled.

When they couldn't hoard masks and hand sanitizers, people went after toilet paper since it doesn't expire. It really doesn't help that social media is spreading the panic with pictures of empty shelves, so it presents a picture that things are running out when it's not. The paranoia snowballs then like crazy. Basically, people are idiots.

Nintendo uses the same tactics of fear and the illusion of product scarcity to drive up demand.

Because of the panic buyers all of my local supermarkets are OUT of food.

The assholes are scalping TP in the parking lots for $200 a pack.

People are buying it because other people are buying it, and they don't want to be the ones left hanging out to dry. It started because of a stupid rumour in Hong Kong that their TP was being imported from Wuhan, which made a few people buy large amounts. That led to others doing the same, and it spread.

There's also a false rumor being spread by some celebrities on social media that explosive diarrhea is the main symptom of coronavirus.

This was me trying to do my regular shopping for the month, at multiple stores, after viewing the shelves for about 5 mins each:

I get off of work late, so, I'm assed out by default. Going to attempt to go early in the morning.
