Wii emulator can do 720p HD

The Wii's dreadful graphics are one of the reasons why I haven't touched mine in six months.

That's really all I've got to say. It's a steaming pile of shit with graphics that would be impressive if we were still in the 1990s, but for 2009, it's unacceptable. There is no excuse. The thing must literally cost about three dollars to manufacture.

Stupid question, but are the shadows from the roof windows pre-baked?

They scale with the resolution, and so remain razor sharp, put the crappy low resolution shadow maps of games like COD4 to shame tbh. I realise that the system employed by the like of COD4 is more advanced but for environmental shadows like that, the actual final resut is far inferior imo.

Hyperbole much?

Unsurprisingly Wind Waker looks even more fabulous in 720p and Twilight Princes is still ugly as sin. Funny thing that, especially with Wind Waker being so much older.

They're baked in the geometry. Rare had a tool that generated shadow volumes (like stencil shadows) and split the level's polygons at the shadow's intersections, darkening the shadowed segments.

Ah, nice to find out how they created the effect. The result in high resolutions in particular is really quite spectacular.

:( stop making me bitter please,

I want a new wind waker :(

Blugh, he shows off the ugliest area of Twilight Princess by far. Fuck, go to Lake Hylia or something.

I love Twilight Princess and the way it looks, but yeah, WW is like omg

Agreed, WW was one of the best Zelda's ever graphically. I was amazed by it on the GC and that HD video of it running on this emulator just made me sad its been relegated to the DS for its last two iterations.

Do all Nintendo games have annoying
(stupid)
sounds or is it just a Japanese game thing?

I have never owned or played any Nintendo console games but I love seeing the advances in emulation for any platforms. After watching all the videos in this thread I've noticed something really off-putting about all these Nintendo system games. They all have cutesy, super repetitive and annoying sounds!

How do people get past that stuff? I guess that must be a reason why I was never into Nintendo systems.

try playing Okami, you will want to kill yourself.

See this Nintendo, this is what the Wii should have looked like. Underpowered but not awful.

There's really nothing that needs to be said about this post. It speaks volumes about itself.

That must be it. Sorry guys, I didn't want to fire you all up, I was just making an observation of what turned me off of the Nintendo stuff.

I'm very impressed with the emulator, though. It's impressive to see how well it's doing during so early into the lifetime of the system. It'll be neat to see how far it will go.

REmake and Wind Waker are easily the two best. Wind Waker is seriously a timeless game and I don't think no matter how high the bar gets for graphics, it will still look incredible. So few 3D games have that (MGS2 is another one that has it).

Damn, Perfect Dark doesn't half hold up when played through Project 64. The cart is pretty much unplayable with its atrocious framerate but the constant 60fps and perfect IQ makes a world of difference.

.

What & how, I thought N64 emulation was limited to what ever the game was set at, is Majora's Mask at 60fps possible?

HOLY SHIT. GOLD MEDAL....ACTUALLY GO PLATINUM.:lol :lol

I'm guessing Rogue Squadron II working is out of the question, that would look better then Lair at 1080p with full AA and AF I'd guess.

I'm confused, why is everyone saying this post is so hilarious? I mean, I think Nintendo game sounds are much more preferable than hearing the f-word constantly in a game, but that's just me. Or is it funny because he's never played any Nintendo games, but saying the sounds are a "reason why [he] was never into [them]"?

One thing that annoys me is the Wii system sounds and the Mario Kart music when waiting. The Wii weather channel music is AMAZING, for instance...but the default main menu Wii music is an annoying, short, repetitive DOODOODOODOODOODOO clip. Why not put something pleasant there? And the same for mario kart, for the kind of annoying short looping music playing when searching/waiting to connect.

Of course, I'm not a big fan of beeps and boops in games, since I didn't grow up on them.

Xabora, how did you get Star Fox to run? I'm trying to do it now, but it hangs up before i can start first mission. The weirdest thing that I used to play it on earlier version of emulator like last year, but couldn't get through first boss. Is it possible to beat it now?

Its kinda bugged atm, you need to use the 32bit IL version of the latest build.

Nope, Majora's Mask will never be able to draw more than one frame per every three fields. The only way to play it at 60 fps is to set the emulator to 180 hz and play it at three times the original speed. Same holds true for almost every N64 game (though most draw one frame for every two fields), although a few games such as GoldenEye and Perfect Dark can see framerate improvements through emulation because their framerate wasn't limited in the same manner. I was going to mention this earlier but I didn't want to ruin BrainStew's day.

Just goes to show that a great art direction & aesthetic is greater than technical muscle.

Speaking of great aethetics, any chance of hooking us up with some Star Fox Adventures shots? I imagine that game would look godly with this. :D

Man Wind Waker looks so good in HD. WW's graphics are seriously going to end up being timeless.

edit: shit mario sunshine looks really good too...oh man what i'd give for Nintendo to work on a proper HD game.

I don't even fucking own an HD TV and these videos got me wet.

I only just decided to boot P64 back up for the first time in years because of this thread and now that I've spent more than a cursory glance, yeah, you're definitely right. Whilst that little 60fps counter is going in the corner its still rather jerky, when only playing for a couple of minutes with a keyboard I put that jerkiness down to the control and animations but, yeah its most definitely a lower frame cap. I only booted it up to take the photos so wasn't really paying attention, and me being use to playing N64 games on a PAL TV complete with constant slowdown means that its still much better than before anyway, so I'm still happy wit the improvements.

My bad, sorry for misleading anyone, but I still maintain this is the best way to play N64 games.

I haven't read much in this thread other than the screen posts, but...

...is there any reason as to why The Wii itself can't output in 720p? I'm not too knowledgeable with console tech and the like, but even when things are in 720p, these games look much better.

Or is that because these emulators are using some sort of gpu plugins to make these games look a little better?
