Wii U Pro Controller announced - X360pad design, no screen, "for multiplatform games"

I wouldn't be surprised if you can use this with the tablet in your lap/table/stand. Just as an option.

There's really no reason to do so, unless you think the tablet is too heavy to hold or something.
The tablet have everything the pro pad have, plus a touch screen that is accessible.

The original (last year) montage had some kid playing NSMB single player with a Wii remote when the pad was available. It seemed silly. But maybe in some circumstances the 2 pro pads or wii remotes will be used by both players instead of the tablet, if only to not give Player 1 a distinct advantage. Or in addition. Like, place the tablet on the table so both players benefit equally from what info is shown. Each can glance down to view the map, maybe splitscreen the viewing area so each player can hit the touch screen for an effect / menu control, etc. Show a move list for a fighting game. Stuff like that.

Why don't MS (or Sony) copy Nintendo's cross Dpad now that the patent's expired?
Sony sorta did for the Vita actually, while the center is still recessed now it's just a slightly X at the center, rather than the entire middle put under the plastic frame like every other Sony D-Pad.

I also suspect it may be that they feel like they've done their own thing and should stick with it.

I really thought this was fake at first.

Looks nice but I think Nintendo should've designed it a little bit differently so that it won't look like the 360 controller.

Yeah the vita's is quite nice, but as you said sony can be a little stubborn when it comes to controller design (or is it their fans who are stubborn?). MS have no excuse though, that thing is horrible.

I wish someone would copy the DSphat's Dpad, that thing was Godlike

wait there's more new controller announcements...

Radio Free Nintendo confirmed the triggers are digital :/

Then it's on us to change that. Everybody needs to contact Nintendo ASAP.

I'll bet Nyko or someone makes a decent 3rd-party controller, though.

What? It wouldn't matter if Nyko made a 3rd-party controller, the software for WiiU won't recognize analog input from the triggers.

Exactly. It has to be in the SDK and if it's in the SDK it would be standard on every controller.

Apparently some press releases said they were analog. Who to believe?

Yeah that's what I thought. Plus just holding the controllers doesn't really confirm anything. Let someone play a game with them and see.

Symmetrical sticks are the best. And up high means I get to use the sticks where my thumbs naturally rest. As for the buttons being lower? Let's face it, most 3d games these days have you using two sticks and the triggers to play. Most 2D games have you using the d-pad and face buttons. It makes sense.

I want this controller for every console ever.

I thought that the GamePad had digital triggers, yet the Pro controller had analog triggers? Judging by the pictures we've seen thus far. It would be one major setback for Nintendo appeaing to third parties if they don't have the triggers right.

They wouldn't put analog triggers on one and digital on the other. Let's just wait for some official info.

Is it possible the triggers are analog in the same way that ps2 had analog L2 &R2?

I hope not. That style of analog is nearly useless.

Seriously has GAF (the monolithic entity) been drunk for the past week? People have done nothing but bitch about "Why it need screen?!" and then they reveal a controller that doesn't and all we get is "How many you need to play?! Fractured vision for the console! Shows a lot of confidence in their Upad."

They did this with the Wii. This doesn't show any more hesitancy about the DRC than the classic controller and CCPro did to the Wiimote.

All it shows is a company too willing to listen to people that have little interest anyway.

You know, no matter how crazy you sometimes seem to be, I really consider you one of the best posters on NeoGAF.
I also agree with your quoted post 100%.

EDIT:
I want to emphasize again that analog triggers are confirmed on the Pro Controller. Please stop thinking those are digital buttons, because they're not. They're analog.
How did people ever think these are digital buttons? Seriously, if they were they'd look fucking stupid for being digital.

So I'm assuming this uses Bluetooth, right? Good chance it'll work on PC?
Yep, it does and that chance is guaranteed seeing how easily the Wiimote connects to a PC. This uses the same protocol.

This will also be my pad of choice to use on PC, Mac, jailbroken devices, etc.
