Yeah, I could definitely go for some off tv VC goodness right about now. I've been on a retro kick lately, watching all of Chrontendo/Chronsega/Chronturbo/whatever PLayer One's Sega series is called, and playing through Phantasy Star II on my iPad. The iPad is nice, but the experience would definitely be a bit better with a real dpad & buttons.

I really, really hope they keep the other systems this time around, PC Engine etc., though the fact that they haven't said anything about that may not bode well. But I'd love it to death if I could play through one of those classic turbo cd rpgs on the u pad right about now.

Wonder if that screw hole near the battery will be used for an official extended battery. I like the Wii U even though my only game is Nintendo Land but that battery sure does go quick.

I know the first big system update is stated for April, but did they confirm VC for April too? I believe they only said "Spring" for that.

And I like Miiverse. As a guy who enjoys browsing through fanart, Miiverse is definitely something to check on regularly.

Yea they did just say spring but man..may is summer pretty much. Then E3, it feel like we will get VC unveiling at E3 when they know we should have it before then atleast

I know what you mean. I played LttP last weekend, today I've been playing Super Metroid...
Obviously not RPGs, but retro none the less.
 
Their messaging about the Wii U Virtual Console has been a bit confusing to say the least. What's the difference between the VC and the games they've already released?

Any word on whether we're going to have repurchase our entire library? Seems like that's the route they're taking, if you look at what they're doing on the 3DS. Are we going to have to suffer through tons of games no one really wants like we have on Wii / 3DS?

I don't understand the bolded. If you mean Famicom 30 promotion (Balloon Fight, F-Zero, Punch-Out!!) then nothing. It's literally Virtual Console except the service hasn't really launched yet. VC really launches with April update.

You will have to pay a fee to access the games you bought on Wii. This is after you have moved them to Wii U. A buck for NES games $1.50 dollars for the SNES. Use your imagination for the rest. Why? Because apparently they can't just press magic button to make them all tranfer to Wii U. Also Nintendo likes money.

There was no new info and IIRC it was never even streamed. Just a recap of what we already knew was coming.

They explained it all very clearly in that Nintendo Direct a few months back. The main differences on the U are off-TV play and Miiverse integration. The anniversary games they've already released are just the dry run for the U VC until they get everything up and running to their satisfaction.

You will have to re-buy everything, but it will cost less if you already have it - $1.00 for NES games, $1.50 for SNES.

They'll wait until the very last minute like they always do. :(

Anyone know how long the Batman discount is suppose to last or is that a permanent price reduction so it matches the other editions that contain all the content? Want to buy it but not at the moment. Perhaps at the end of April.

Is Trine 2 more platformer or action game?
 
In a perfect world full of flowers, mushrooms and stars, the Wii U Virtual Console should have its own icon on the Gamepad menú AND a Link/banner on the eShop. It would make things easier.
 
I wonder how long it's going to take for publishers to adjust the prices of their games on the eShop. I'm talking about the retail games. Far to many launch games are still at full price.

Ubisoft had some sale with their retail titles last week (is it still on?). The more stuff comes into the eShop the more publishers have to stand out by having sales and making their games cheaper.

Bit of both? Also some physic based puzzle solving. Pretty swell game. There's not any real platforming in though.

I hear you. Games like Mass Effect 3, Darksiders 2, and Batman: Arkham City are a no go for me at $60. At $30 dollars I start to get curious . . . at $20 dollars I am all in. I have a 1TB HDD and am going all digital if I can.

Should add that for us in PAL land, F-Zero and Punch Out were in 60Hz (finally), and the upgrade fee is for Gamepad and Miiverse support (and higher res? Does anyone know Punch Out's file size on the Wii compared to the Wii U version?)

Otherwise, you can play the Wii versions as is without any extra cost.
 
Wow, so last night I had some friends over including a guy I recently met and his fiancé. The guy is the definition of a hardcore gamer and is very into PS3, PC, and arcade games, which is how we became friends in the first place. He and his fiancé had never played the Wii U so we played some NSMBU, Nintendo Land, and Game and Wario. Everyone had a great time. His fiancé said that they should pick up a Wii U and he said that the controller is pretty expensive. Controller? I said the Wii U is pretty expensive but the controller comes with it. He said, "Yeah, but she already has a Wii, so how much is just the controller?" Oh man. So I explained that the Wii U is in fact a completely new system. (I also recommended them to wait a couple months for the inevitable price drop and more games.)

My parents didn't understand that the Wii U is a new system, which is expected, but a guy who is very into gaming? Nintendo really is doing a very poor job marketing this thing.

punch out file sizes are wii: almost 3MB wii u: 3.9MB.

Currently just a promo (although many around these parts have talked as though it were a reflection on the service itself), launching the full service in "spring".

We're not sure about any other details beyond that, though if I were a betting man, probably coinciding with the spring update and there will be more surprises beyond that.

Assassins Creed - The big map on the Wii U screen is really good for the evasdropping / stealth missions !

I think it's ingenious of Ubi not to clutter the map screen with too many touch/hotkey buttons except for the horse. The horse button is really useful too when you're in a tight situation and you need to get away quick !
 
Does anyone here have a Japanese Wii U outside of Japan?

Well, he's not into Nintendo at all, until last night when he got to play the Wii U.

Still, I'm now in the camp that it should have just been called the Wii 2.

Btw, he mentioned he hasn't played a recent Zelda, but wants to. That made me realize the Wii U is pretty great for Zelda games since you'll be able to play five of them: TP and SS BC, WW remake, and the new Zelda. Also I'm sure you'll be able to download OoT through VC.

Edit: And Majora's Mask and every other console Zelda now that I think about it. That's pretty great.

Edit edit: And Minish Cap too. That's a lot of Zelda.

Right. First of all, thanks for being curious because I had a blast!

You buy Karaoke tickets - I bought 1 ticket for 100 yen, that gets you 1 hour or 60 songs - whichever you use up first.

The patch was about 350MB.

When I got into the app there was an option to see the chart, so I thought that'd be a good place to start - there were a lot of artists I didn't recognise but lots of AKB48.

I picked a song and the song started playing (midi) on the TV with my Mii being the main vocalist and the rest of the band randomly generated Miis.

The next song was more of a ballad and my Mii was singing whilst four Miis in green sparkly suits danced around me. The crowd was waving their glow sticks in the air.

All in all, it was a great laugh even if I couldn't sing any of the songs - I just let it play.

I also thought it was cool that they even have a fast-forward and rewind feature.

Oh, so to answer your question, yes, it works outside of Japan. I live in the UK. :)
