Not sure this is the right thread for this piece of advice but anyway:

In case you find the volume levels coming out of the gamepad's audio jack too low on your headphones, pick a pair of high-sensitivity, high-efficiency phones (normally the higher the impedance - the better the efficiency).

I just fixed my previously-broken koss porta pros - my all-time favorite portable heaphones which I normally use with my handhelds, and the difference in volume output from the gamepad is tremendous. This is the first time I'm listening to it with the volume slider not set at max. Not to mention the sensitivity and bandwidth of the porta pros are excellent, so I'm currently re-discovering NintendoLand's jukebox ; )

While your suggestion is sensible, in regards to impedance it's the opposite: Higher impedance headphones are generally higher quality (able to reproduce more distinguished sound when driven by a suitable headphone amp), but lower impedance headphones are more flexible in terms of devices as they only require a low amount of power (e.g. suitable for mobile devices that are limited by their battery).

I've never had a problem with the buttons while playing Cod. In fact, on the Wii remote, I can crouch, jump, toss grenades, run, etc. while aiming. On any other controller you have to take your right thumb off the stick to press any of the face buttons. The only button I have a little trouble reaching comfortably is my tactical grenade button, which I've placed on ^dpad.

I'm far from being a sound engineer but doesn't the resistance in a (good efficiency - see speaker sensitivity) speaker come from its capacity to convert power to sound waves?

Background:
Impedance ist the AC resistance of the headphones' voice coil, which is connected to the headphone amplifier. A impedance of 0 ohms would be a short-circuit of the headphone amplifier output; the headphone amplifier supplies an extreme current and after getting very hot, it either turns off automatically - or dies. The other side of the story is infinite resistance (broken cable); no current flows, but also no audio signals arrives - so, we have to be in between these two: 0 and infinite.

In general, headphones with low impedance are designed for use with mobile devices; mobile devices use low power from batteries and therefore also the output power is limited. A low impedance headphone can play (slightly) louder at a low power output. But why high impedance headphones?

The impedance is determined by the voice coil (dynamic headphones), which is a winded copper wire (coated to avoid a short-circuit). This copper wire is available in nearly every length, but not in every gauge (thickness) and a thicker wire has less resistance than a thin wire ("less fits through"). The magnetic field of the voice coil depends on the number of windings of the coil, causing a low impedance system to use a thicker (also heavier) wire and since the membrane foil can't be infinitely light-weight, the moving mass (voice coil and diaphragm) is relatively high. It's pretty clear that a higher mass can't move as easily (following an audio signal) as a lower mass. This low mass can easily be accomplished with thinner (lower weight) wire, but the thinner wire has a higher impedance. This means that the DT 770 PRO with 250 ohms sound more natural, but plays (depending on the used headphone amplifier) not as loud as the 80 ohms version.

The transducers of the 80 ohms versions are stronger and more powerful, a bit more low-mid accentuated and therefore this version is ideal for powerful reproducing of low-frequency material f.e. coming from a bass guitar. The 250 ohms version sounds more smooth and voluminous and can be used for mixing situations within the studio to analyse the whole mix.

It's just a game issue right now. Nintendo Land has made get-togethers with friends a blast. The multiplatform games are some of the best titles of 2012. However, there just isn't anything currently all that exciting for single-player.

Well, doesn't that pretty much confirm what I said - a speaker at the upper end of the impedance range for a given class (case in point the mobile 32-80 ohms) would be more efficient due to the lighter weight of the coil? By more efficient I'm referring to the quality of outputting more sound-wave-converted power over a wider bandwidth. Apropos, the porta pros are 60 ohms and so far they've beaten every 32 ohm competitor I've thrown at them in terms of loudness from a portable source.

You are only getting part of the equation: Higher impedance means the headphone requires less power, but a higher voltage. Mobile devices are working at low voltages, that's why low impedance headphones are capable of outputting higher volumes with mobile devices. This proves to be especially noticeable with sound that has a high dynamic range.

There are a number of reasons why your Koss Porta Pro may sound louder than your previous headphones, but the fact that they are high impedance isn't part of it.
 
For those interested, if it hasn't been talked about yet, DLC seems to be live on the Wii U. Marvel Avengers is listed as having downloadable content on the Wii U eShop. Looking at the page for the game shows the following can be bought. Ugh I hate this kind of DLC.

So no excuses for the Black Ops and Assassin's Creed 3 DLC along with season passes not showing up.

With the above you can check which items you want, add them to the shopping cart and then buy.

Edit: The US eShop menu system still sucks. Great that each game has it's own page but they really have to add a way for you to search the shop so all demos get listed or all games with DLC are listed.
 
Had an awesome game night with the boys last night. Peeled back more layers to Nintendoland and the game just keeps on giving. Pikmin multiplayer just won me over and the last level on luigis mansion was a great surprise.

ZombiU multi is getting better and better the more we play too. Lots of depth that really underlines the benefit of facing a human opponent versus AI. Playing with wiimote is a nice bonus too for me as I enjoy the added immersion.

Overall, I can understand why the WiiU will take time to gain acceptance. It does so many new and exciting things, but not one of them is a system seller on their own. If smiles is the measure of success, my friends and I are satisfied customers--well, except for the one guy that still thinks it's kiddy, which is ironic because he's Asian.
 
Bleh the right side of my gamepad has developed a squeak. Its like the top glossy part is ever so slightly lifted from the matte back part and when I press on the part that I normally grip with my palm under the letter buttons it has a little give and squeaks. Is this normal?
 
Messed around with my new Wii U and I'm in love! CoD is great on the gamepad.

I downloaded the Sonic Transformed and Rayman demos and had a question though. I tried playing just on the Gamepad and I don't get the game screen, just what looks to be info like the track map and stage select for Rayman. Am I missing something or do these demos not play just on the Gamepad? Is there some magic button combo I need to press to force it into this mode?

Fair enough. I always associated the impedance of those headphones with their efficiency, but since my expertise in that sphere is zilch I can accept I've been wrong on that the entire time. Thank you for the info.

Rayman Legends' demo is not playable on the gamepad alone - the pad shows various UI elements, but not the game view, aside from certain touch-based gameplay moments.

Rayman needs the TV. In Sonic, swipe down on the Gamepad screen for off-TV play.

Thanks! I went through the Wii U manual a couple of times to see if it mentioned some magic combo and couldn't find anything. I'm figuring out that it's software enabled and activated so I guess it's up to the dev to put a button/swipe/action to get the swap then.

They do, Just Dance 4 allready offers DLC tracks. Downloaded gangnam style and it works perfectly.

Did this end already? I followed the link and couldn't see any B2G1 reference. I'm going to spring for NSMBU, as it's not going down in price any time soon, since I'm pretty full of Trine and need a new side-scrolling diet. I wouldn't mind getting a couple games that I was waiting on price drops for.

I know this is probably a silly question, but do we know that the full game needs the TV, or do we only know about the demo so far?
 
Did somebody notice Miiverse got updated today? One thing at a glance is that when viewing a screenshot you can press B to go back now, versus having to use the screen button before. Also, the screenshot loading hourglass icon got changed a tad.

Interestingly, when viewing the screenshot the standard button access controls applied. You could always hit the right direction on the d-pad then press the A button to go back.

Happy to hear that it's simpler now, though.

I'm going to the store tonight to likely buy NSMBU. I also want Zombi U. Anybody want to recommend a third game? I was considering Black Ops 2, but I saw a kid playing it at a party recently on his Xbox 360, and it didn't look all that good.

edit: I also wasn't particularly fond of the controls in the Sonic racing game. Man, I'm hard to please!

I LOVE my Wii U! Admittedly I haven't turned it on in a couple of weeks because 1) I've been addicted to Professor Layton and 2) I've been addicted to Guild Wars 2 (although this addiction is waning).

And, frankly, I'm waiting for the next batch of games now. I want Wonderful 101, Pikmin 3 and Lego City Undercover.

BLOPS2 is actually really fun (if you're into that sort of thing). Depends on what you like though. I've barely touched the campaign and maybe played 5hrs of competitive multiplayer but I've already put in something like 50hrs into zombies. It's addicting.

I'm in the same boat. 60 hours last month and none this month. Just waiting for a title. I have been using amazon prime video (lol).

Eagerly waiting for the next release. Tempted to get Tekken.

Tekken is sublime. It's my go-to single player drunk game now :-P It's not so hectic that I get motion sick or dizzy but visceral enough that I don't ever get bored. It's also seems to have quite a bit of content, and I can always find a match online.
 
Just spent a really fun night of 5-player Wii U gaming, for the first time.

Nintendo Land was made for this stuff. I mean, compare Luigi's Ghost Mansion in 2-player and 5-player and we're talking about completely different games. Same with Mario Chase. There was a lot of laughter, a lot strategy talk and then a lot more laughter. At first you think the GamePad player has a natural advantage. They you regroup, dicuss and strategise and it all changes. But it really depends on the natural gaming skill of the plater with the pad in his/her hands.

Mario U in 5-player is not about progress. It's purely about fun and dismay at the difficulty of playing with three other people jumping on you, eating you or shoving you off a ledge.

Sonic Transformed was a different story. We have four Wii Remotes in the house, but not four Nuncucks. That meant we were forced to play with motion steering, which rendered the (otherwise decent) game unplayable. Should not have been shipped without an option for D-pad steering (or decent online matchmaking).

A lot of beer was drank tonight, and a lot of fun was had with the Wii U. Of course I was asked the inevitable questions about whether it was a new console or just a new controller (even two months after launch). We had begun by playing Nintendo Land, and my German friend had not noticed any improvement in graphics over the original Wii. I explained that if we had put Black Ops 2 in the drive, he would've noticed straight away. (For a lot of people it seems, highly stylised graphics = low quality graphics, no matter how good the lighting etc.)

I was already really happy with my Wii U in single player, two player and online. Now I'm planning to invite more people over to try it and spread the message... since Nintendo's marketing efforts certainly aren't doing the job.

I own Nintendo Land and NSMBU, and I really can't think of two games available I'm willing to pay full price for in order to get a third one (again, no clue what to get).

I've demoed Sonic Transformed, and I just don't like it; ZombiU makes me shit in my pants; not into competitive fighters so Tekken is off the table. Other games I can wait on, I guess.
 
Hmm. I was going to get NSMBU, Zombi U, and Arkham City. But they were out of Mario, and Batman's price has already dropped. I may stop by tomorrow to see if they got in a resupply.

I generally play the single player mode of games and on rare occasion play against my friends when they come over to visit.
 
I've beaten mario, played nintendo land with friends and family, and currently use my wiiu as an expensive wii for great BC titles I missed.

Was enjoying Rhythm Heaven today and was poking around in the wii shop, and really wanted to buy a few games. I know it's nintendo, but what are the odds that the Wii VC stuff gets updated for WiiU support? I don't want to spend money on a bunch of VC stuff now for it to be stuck in Wii mode if they also get WiiU versions.

Or maybe they do let you transfer to the wiiu only from the wii it was bought on, but then what about stuff bought in wii mode already sitting on the wiiu?

why hasn't nintendo laid any of this out already?

If Nintendo hasn't said it's in their plans, it's not happening. A Wii VC game is a Wii application which consists of an emulator packaged with a ROM. If they're not able to put regular games on the subscreen, they're not doing it with their old VC titles.
 
After 2 days of owning a Wii U, I have to say I'm disappointed with it.

After playing CoD and NSMBU on it, I'm disappointed that I can't take the gamepad with me everywhere and that there isn't a true portable game system out (yet) like this. I love my Vita, but with Gamepad play, I just wanted to play it wherever I go!

In case you missed it, I friggin' love the Wii U and the Off-TV capability. It's everything Remote Play should/could have been for the Vita.

I'm guessing that the next generation of consoles will allow this, functioning as a portable and a home console.
 
According to my Twitter timeline, the Wii U Assassin's Creed DLC is also up. I can't confirm because I don't have the game.

Still loving my Wii U - it helps that I deliberately avoided playing the third party games on other systems.

I was in Target today and the deal IS going on. To bad their isnt any other games i want for the Wii U right now, I have Mario, Sonic and Nintendoland, I was tempted though since its such a great deal, maybe ill try the Zombie U demo. if i didnt have my 360 i would do the deal but i have been playing the shit out of Forza Horizon and Black Ops 2 lately so i think buying more wii u games might be a waste right now, not enough gaming time

on a side note can anyone confirm how many of the Nintendoland games need a nunchuk? I havent played much of it yet but i want to do co op with my fiancee and daughter soon, I have 2 wii remotes, am i good getting 1 nunchuk or do i need 2 and should i get a 3rd wii remote or is 2 and the gamepad fine for most games?
