Wii U Speculation Thread of Brains Beware: Wii U Re-Unveiling At E3 2012

Although Smash as a launch game is unlikely, and, if it happens, it probably means a rushed underwhelming game, I don't see why a gameplay teaser by late 2012 is that unlikely. They aren't going to make something completely new. Unless they have problems with a new graphical engine using the next system's power, they should be able to get a trailer out at least.

Problem is, there's also that 3DS version which is going to cut into the development team's resources. Who knows, we may end up having to wait another 6 months for both games to be completed and launched simulanetously.

The earlier interview made the 3DS version sound like a different game, not a port. They easily can have different development teams as long as they don't try to keep "parity" between the different versions.

Last time when Smash was rushed for a console's release, it turned out to be the best game in the series by far.

I'm all for another rush-job if we end up with Melee 2.0.

Personally I hope they don't spend time on Smash Bros, I thoroughly dislike that game. But it's a pretty reasonable seller. That said, Mario Kart or NSMB U would probably be better in that regard.

Then, we don't know if Nintendo is going to really push for the "Core" and do us a Metroid all sexied up and that.

You know, if they're going to unveil it again, then I think the system should be black. I never got around to getting a black Wii, so I hope the system is black from the beginning. :D

I think 3 years is a good time frame for a WiiU Smash Bros game and they haven't even started development on it I think (isn't the studio focusing completely on Kid Icarus right now?)

Most of the team, probably, are focused on finishing KI, yeah. But it's always possible one of the planners is working on early concepts to 'get a head start' for once KI is done.

I don't know about that. I think the asymmetric game play with the U Pad is one of the most encouraging features we've seen in gaming in a long time. I mean, frankly, Sony has essentially only tweaked their controller slightly here and there since the original Playstation. Yes some of the revisions have been fairly significant in terms of features but as a controller/input system it's essentially remained the same, the same button placement, the same feel, etc.

That can be a good thing, familiarity can make picking up and playing a game much easier - but I think it also leads to a staleness of experience. Nintendo has a CHANCE to offer something fundamentally different. I mean, the Wii was good because obviously motion gaming was a relatively unexplored concept, certainly on the scale Wii offered it. But still, the input was mostly going to be the same (and even in a game like Smash Bros Brawl where you could use different controllers you all had the same "goal" in mind and more or less the same idea of what your character was doing).

The Wii U is changing that. I thought the most impressive concept they showed off was the different modes where players with the Pad had COMPLETELY different objectives and perspectives and goals and controls than those with the Wii motes. I know there is a focus among gamers (that I share) of the desirability of getting more than one pad working with the console (really, it's the only realistic way Madden will be taken to the next level with Wii U without giving one player an unfair advantage over another) but I think that comes at the expense of talking about the importance of the different experience offered by Wii U.

Having players using totally different CONCEPTS in what they're doing on a system is a very new experience. Historically games have offered different experiences by allowing people to play the same game with different characters with variable abilities and that was great. But being able to play in a COMPLETELY different way that is not directly relatable to the way another player is playing is very different and I think, has the potential to be a HUGE concept.

FINALLY!

It's like we're twins. ^5.

I think New Super Mario Bros. Mii will be a launch title and some new ip that showcases the graphics. The rest will be 3rd parties.

I think SSBWU + Pikmin 3 will be released as the holiday games for 2014 and Pokemon Stadium 3 + Super Mario Universe for 2013.

Do you guys think NSMB Mii will at least get a serious facelift before being sent to the store? NSMB Wii was phenomenal, but having to endure a totally sterile art style for the 3rd time in a Mario game will deeply wound me. :(

This is one thing I also worry about. Something is going to have to change to really give those new Mario/Mii games a fresh look. I don't think the Miis will really change much, but maybe the environments and animations will be graphically impressive. As for Mario, I'm nt sure. He's Mario, he'll be ok i guess

It is hard to say. Part of me thinks we are overestimating just how much of a game that was and it was nothing more than a simple tech demo to really just demonstrate the streaming to the controller. The other part thinks that the other two entries were so successful that they will stick with the style because people respond to it.

While it is very possible, I don't see Nintendo including Miis in a mainline Mario game. It may be fine in Kart of Party but they could have easily put Miis in NSMBW and didnt. So while there will definitely be another entry in the series (at launch if they are smart) I feel it will be different than what was shown at E3.

I remember IGN, I think, did a piece about how polished the level design of NSMB Mii was if it was just a 'tech demo', more so than the other experiences on the floor.

99% it will more into a full fledged NSMB sequel. The question is how far Nintendo will go in terms of innovation on all the planes: innovation, music, level design, UI etc.

lol so true

But a rushed Smash 4 would most likely result in Brawl 2.0 >_>

Why not just do a Melee/Brawl HD re-release (with massively overhauled visuals) and just incorporate a proper online component? Seems like a winner, because there's no way Smash 4 will be releasing anywhere close to launch.

Sidenote, a timed exclusive of MGS5 at launch would be a HUGE deal for Nintendo at E3.

I think we'll be fine on that as I believe Nintendo said they would not be doing that themselves, just providing the option for 3rd parties.

On a side note Nintendo's online system could very well be providing what Epic said was lacking in current online setups.

I could see RE6 being more likely.

Not that either is likely at all.

Agreed, I'd love to see Re6 hit Wii U first. But to be honest I have much more faith in Kojima to really invest in awesome ways to use the Upad without it being too gimiicky...as opposed to Capcom (minus Mikami).

Sadly I have no faith in Kojima being involved in anything on a Nintendo platform.

Except Boktai/Lunar Knights I suppose.

I would be pleased with MGS: HD Collection with the addition of "Twin Snakes" on the roster.

That's not the ONLY title I'd need or want around or at launch, but it would definitely make me pleased.

I think another thing that’s changed is the way people are willing to spend their money. Consoles need to adapt to this. Game revenue has moved to the service model and the microtransactions model. Consoles need to start being comfortable with that. They need to be able to do something where small virtual items can be sold and bought for 20¢ without a long certification process and a price approval process.

Right now we’re not even allowed to change the prices of virtual content. We’re not even allowed to set the prices. I just don’t think this protectionist approach is going to be successful in a world where the price of virtual items changes on a day-today basis.

Double-A games will never come back unless we get rid of this notion of a game being $60 or not released. The console manufacturers need to let this happen. The best way of driving developers to PC is telling them they have no freedom in what prices they can set for virtual items. It would be great to have the level of freedom that, say, Steam gives you.

Flexible online system. :P

From Iwata's Q&A the other day (http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/en/library/events/111028qa/index.html)

The subject was 3ds but it would seem obvious that this would spread to Wii U too. Frankly I think it's a great idea for several of their titles, especially Mario Kart.

Iwata said:
(During the Q&A session of the last Financial Briefing, I said, for one thing, that add-on stages and content, for which the developers have poured a significant amount of their creative resources into, should be offered for the consumers to purchase separately.) Nintendo will also offer something like this for the titles Nintendo publishes next year, in a way that should be appreciated by our consumers.

Yeah it's actually still in line with what he said before.

http://andriasang.com/comxc5/

During a Q&A session at Nintendo's Tokyo earnings briefing on Friday, CEO Satoru Iwata shared some details on Nintendo's plans for digital downloads.

One investor asked Iwata about his thoughts on paid download content. Nintendo is currently preparing a paid item transaction system for both 3DS and Wii U, Iwata revealed. For 3DS, this will be available to developers by the end of the year.

Nintendo may be selective in its use of this system for itself, though. Iwata and Shigeru Miyamoto are interested in the possibility of extending the life of games through added stages and other features that players want. However, Iwata believes that pursuing certain types of low quality paid download content opportunities -- things like unlocking keys or stat increases -- would, while likely increasing short term profits, not allow them to build along term relationship with customers. Therefor, Nintendo feels that it should not have this type of low quality content for itself.

What's the achievement after ever green?

Assuming they've been working on it for the past few months alongside MK7, I could see Mario Kart WiiU being finished for launch.

Is the Q&A posted somewhere?

What does he say about a new Pokemon this spring?

No, YOU stay away :P

With what Iwata has said about not going for the cheap BS DLC and Nintendo being more selective with it I'm sure they wont be assholes and decide to make you buy DLC for stuff that already on the disc. Maybe now instead of having a case like the "Forbidden 7" the team can keep working on characters and stages/ items that they wanted to add but didn't have the time to complete so that fans don't have to wait 5+ years for new content. Or hell, maybe they could patch up any major balancing problems that slipped by so that we don't have another Brawl happen.

I do believe Sakurai expressed interest in doing DLC for Brawl ... but said it wouldn't happen because of the Wii not having a HD or something.

So... modified PPEs (in-order, shit pipeline design)? Or something else? 3.5GHz?

You probably already know this, but I recently found out that Xenon was originally going to be a 3.5Ghz, OoO chip. I kinda get the feeling Nintendo moved forward on this direction.

Dammit, if that DLC shit starts to infect Nintendo titles...

Well, there are enough games I haven't played from the past 30 years that they would last me the rest of my life. I guess I can take some comfort in that.

I'm hopeful that, when Iwata stated that "we have intentionally delayed the launch of some software titles to early next year" he was referring the Kid Icarus Uprising, and that SSB Wii U has already had work started on it :D

Nintendo has been the saving grace for this, but it looks like those times are nearing an end on consoles. Hopefully an online line isn't a requirement too. Sadly, I don't think they realized this was one of the reasons for Wiis success.

That would've meant a 970-based cpu, as both power5 and power6 were in-order. Now, problem with that supposition is, 970 never reached such clocks, IIRC. The never-materialized GX variant was meant to do 3GHz, though.

I like having the one definitive version of a Nintendo title per gen, particularly for their multiplayer games. Paid DLC for characters is such a horrible idea for a competitive game.

Free balancing patches are acceptable; I don't care for more than that. After Smash WiiU, let Sakurai go make something else.

And I really don't want Nintendo discovering this terrible anti-consumer business model because when Nintendo gets greedy, they really get greedy.

GT/Forza Killer for WiiU confirmed?

Best guess: Cheesy as hell PR event for MK7

Unlikely guess: Nintendo devices will be integrated into some high end models of cars

WTF guess: Free Wii U with every US manufactured car. Is capable of 10X Samaritan-level graphics but runs on a diesel engine. Nintendo single handedly saves the American auto industry and wins the next console war at the same time, but unfortunately stays on Greenpeace's shit list.

it has been a while since the last Nintendo sim/sports/non-kart racer. Theoretical racer developed by Retro? The last Nintendo developed sim would have been the cancelled baseball title on the GC.

Are there any studios out there which would be able to do such a title Nintendo exclusive?

DICE and Bizarre Creations, so not out of nowhere.

Slightly mad studios would be a guess, but I fear they are not big enough to do another title beside C.A.R.S.
