Turn it around. It's a plate!

If the average GAF gamer had their way, controllers would look like this:

That's kind of weird.

Joke character.

Though to be honest, the more I think about it, the more he was likely referring to the Wii. The Wii is definitely the "previous generation" whereas if he were referring to the 360/ps3, he'd have said the "current generation."

Just... leave.

He's just thinking about hardware power wise, like Grandpa Simpson was. Problem is, that's not how it's defined. It's simpler than that. As has been previously stated, I doubt Gabe was thinking that hard either.

Yeah I know. I guess I'm just burned out on "Wii is a last gen console bla blah". Compared to PC everything is old gen yada yada.

Gahiggidy, as with Drinky and drohne, are unbannable as far as I am aware.

Oh. He has legendary status no doubt, but that doesn't make him unbannable.

Wikipedia says the Wii is part of the 7th generation. And it is. I'd hedge my bets on Wii U kicking off the next generation, despite it being indicated as an "in between" console in hardware power. It's the "next" console from Nintendo. It's pretty simplistic in that regard, isn't it?

It really depends on when the PS4/720 come out and what they feature. If they are just beefed up PS360 and come out 5 years after the Wii U, then I would happily relegate the Wii U to late 7th generation. If they come sooner and add a tablet, then I'd be happy to relegate them and the Wii U to the 8th generation. See?

I see what you mean. Personally I group generations by when consoles are released, which seems fairly reliable--you can't let one competitor sit around with a new console for 3 years or they'll eat up market share, so there tends to be a clustering effect. I expect the 720/PS4 to come out within 1 year or possibly up to 1.5 years of the Wii U for this reason.

I guess this wouldn't apply if the Wii U bombed or something though [such that the 720/PS4 could be put off till later], but that doesn't seem realistic.

So wait... this isn't a catch all thread?

Because apparently Square Enix is considering a launch title for Wii U and giving Dragon Quest X Wii U functionality.

Let´see...

HD Generation PowerPC Core

3.2Ghz
Long pipeline (21 Stages if I don´t remember wrong)
Dual Issue
In-Order
Multithreading
VMX
Big
Hot

PowerPC 476FP

1.6Ghz
Short Pipeline (9 Stages)
Out-of-Order
No-Multithreading
Small (3.6mm core+4mm 512KB core)
1.9W per core

Put 3 of them inside a die with their L2 Caches and you will get a CPU that is not more bigger than the Broadway included with the Wii, with similar power consumption and 10 times more powerful. More than enough for a next generation jump.

Maybe a Mod can adjust the title a bit. Seems like it's a good place to post all recent info, imo.

Stop this Power7 bullshit.

It's a speculation thread, why so serious? I even mentioned that it would be customized. The point was just looking at what it could/would be based on.

There's already a thread on it actually (beaten). But if it's ok with the mods, hardware can be dropped from the title.

There's already a thread on it acutally. But if it's ok with the mods, hardware can be dropped from the title.
People have to bitch about a thread marked speculation. They can stop posting in this thread if they do not like it or post 100% sourced info to disprove.

The Fact is there are only 2 CPU types IBM are working on right now that the Wii U can be based on Power 7 or PowerPC A2. Seeing as a Significant quantity of eDRAM is said to be present that strongly suggests A2 is likely not the chip its based on as A2 is designed with only 8MB for the entire chip.

Ah sorry. I couldn't find it when I searched. Can you link? I would like to see discussion. :P

The one for the Wii U is going to be a lot more than a 10x jump from Wii --> Wii U

32bit, double precision FPU and no VMX unit. Not exactly well suited for a console.

Wii U Info Thread of: Gotta Catch em' All!

Sounds like it would fit perfectly just like when I did play Pokemon. I didn't catch 'em all and I can see the same thing happening with things still getting topics.

I also added Hiltz and Penguin's post to the OP a little earlier.

Yeah I don't get that. If he doesn't want to agree that's fine, but that was kind of extreme. And like you and I believe someone else said those are the only possibilities that it could be based on and the A2 could be eliminated. Looking back at the press release the key part(s) are.

The all-new, Power-based microprocessor will pack some of IBM's most advanced technology into an energy-saving silicon package that will power Nintendo's brand new entertainment experience for consumers worldwide. IBM's unique embedded DRAM, for example, is capable of feeding the multi-core processor large chunks of data to make for a smooth entertainment experience.

IBM must have created another advanced, energy saving CPU that they still haven't told us about. And the eDRAM is obvious.

Even the context of the Engadget "article" made it sound like the Watson quote came from IBM and not Engadget. When I read it, it sounds like IBM told them that it was a 45nm custom chip, had "lots" of eDRAM, has a silicon on insulator design, and that the tech is based on what was used in Watson which is Power7. Then when Engadget asked them about the clock speeds, IBM would not give them that info.

Bans vary based on the offense.

And Mark Rein likes that Valve likes the Wii U, and most importantly, he is right if Steam comes to Wii U will be major boon for Nintendo

Valve likes the WiiU -- the idea of having full Steam support on WiiU excites me quite a bit! Valve rocks!

Just a question for those of us without a complete proficiency in chip design & functions, what are the benefits we could see from the Power7/Watson custom chip they're using in Wii U having a large pool of eDRAM?

If Nintendo wants a huge advantage with this system they need to pulling out all the stops and rolling out the red carpet to Valve to get Steam on the system.

That would be GIGANTIC.

Must not get hype for Steam on Wii U. Must not get hype for Steam on Wii U. Must... get hype for Steam on Wii U...

Oh God, either way I'm excited.

Oh yes i agree, some serious shit IS going down. I really think Nintendo means it with the Third Parties this time. Two to three months from now more will be revealed and naysayers will be taken aback.

It is nice to see Major 3rd Party people actually show excitement. We always have to wait for that excitement to turn into results but Nintendo really hasnt had this kind of excitement from the developer side of things in several generations

Big One said:

I would like to be happy about it, but I am afraid this will be like all those developer interviews on the Nintendo conferences, where no real games (cough, Kojima, cough) actually came for Wii....

How would Steam on the Wii U even work? I guess I could see some Steamworks titles a la Portal 2 on PS3, but a Steam DD platform on Wii U doesn't make sense to me. I assume Nintendo will have their own DD service and wouldn't want a rival on the same console..?

Sorry, I should have explained better. I'm not saying the Wii is a last gen console. Of course it's part of the current gen. But therein lies the problem with Gabe saying the Wii U is more powerful than the "previous generation." The 360 and PS3 are certainly not yet part of the previous generation. They're a part of the current generation of consoles, as is the wii. They wont become the previous gen until the next gen gets here.

So when Gabe says the Wii U is more powerful than the previou gen, he could only really be talking about the Wii because that's the preceding nintendo console. If he had said current gen, it would be a more inclusive statement that would cover both the wii and the HD twins.

Probably depends on how much leeway Nintendo is giving with their online service.

What did he say?

Said that Gabe was big on the Wii U about a month before E3 and that Gabe also liked the new online system Nintendo was implementing. Also talked about Nintendo's new console about a month before the French site leaked the info.

Or he just looks at the Wii U as a next generation console, which would make PS3 and Xbox 360 the "previous generation". Your arguing honestly doesn't make a lot of sense.

Nevertheless, the quote is missing some context and is therefore rather useless.
