Well put.

You've heard what gamers think about Wii U (if you haven't, read this story). Now let's see what game makers think about Nintendo's new system.

As part of a feature on Wii U this week, Famitsu got commentary from top Japanese producers and game developers. Here's some of what was said, based as always off a summary from Sokuho@Hokanko.

Tomonobu Itagaki (Valhalla Game Studios)
Said that he has a lot of ideas. He'd like to bring not just Devil's Third to the system, but a variety of other things.

Jun Takeuchi (Capcom)
He believes that developers' skills will be shown in how they can make use of the controller without having it draw the eyes away too much from the television screen. If Wii U has a strategic price, it could be a big hit, he said.

Hideyuki Kobayash (Capcom)
He feels the new controller is like a challenge issued to game creators. He's excited to see what types of games creators will make.

Shuu Takumi (Capcom)
Said that coming into contact with new devices makes his dreams expand. As an example of use, he said that the controller could be used for exploring a crime scene from a different perspective.

Kenichi Ogasawara (Tecmo Koei)
He believes Wii U will give birth to new types of titles that use the system's dual screen setup. Personally, he feels the multiplayer possibilities of having one player use the controller screen while the other payers view the television screen.

Yousuke Hayashi (Tecmo Koei)
He believes the Wii U has the ability to realize completely new game experiences.

Akihiro Suzuki (Tecmo Koei)
The E3 videos made him forecast that the system will deliver new, never-before-seen types of games. While he can't give any information about projects at present, the controller does get the creator spirit moving.

Toshihiro Nagoshi (Sega)
He thinks it's a big thing that Nintendo's hardware has unified around the concept of having two screens. He's personally interested in seeing if the switch to HD will bring changes to the Wii market.

Shinji Mikami (Tango)
He hasn't gotten his hands on the system yet. He's happy about the HD support.

Yoshifumi Hashimoto (Marvelous Entertainment)
The new controller looks like it will lead to some new ideas. For example, in Harvest Moon when you're in your in-game room, if you turn on the television, the video from the television could be shown on the controller screen. He said that he'd personally like to try out a game that splits up roles, where one player uses the new controller and the second player uses the Wiimote.

Akihiro Hino (Level-5)
Said that because stylus-based games like Professor Layton can now be played, they can consider ports. He also said that the system could expand the type of game that can be played in the living room, so he'd like to think about these types of game in the future as well.

Jiro Ishii (Level-5)
He was excited just seeing Zelda in HD. He's personally excited about seeing the changes the controller brings to board games and card games.

2 things I want to see on and I can see happening on the WiiU is a dungeons and dragons game, where you can use the pad as a map and character sheet thingy. Also this SCREAMS Final Fantasy Tactics

I think games where you need to hide content from others are a massive potential market on Wii U. A lot might be casual games but it will still allow nintendo to keep/grow that side of the social-casual game. However, to fully capitalise on it they need to support multiple U controllers.

Another confirmation of Devil's Third on Wii U.

It's never wise to take these sorts of comments as confirmation of anything, especially when it comes to a Nintendo platform. Until you see a press release, assume the worst.

Or... not.
I'll go with that one.

It'd be surprising if there wasn't a Wii version. Itagaki is clearly interested in in the idea and THQ seems really excited about the system. The release date is set for some time in early 2013, so they've got plenty of time to have it ready.

Doubt that, at this time it probably wouldn't make much sense releasing a wii version, from a technical standpoint given the ease of portability to the Wii U from the HD versions.

I think he just forgot to type the "U".

Yep, learned my lesson with Kinect. They had Hideo Kojima and other devs hyping it up but in the end none of them did anything for it.

Hopefully Capcom announce Code Veronica and RE4 HD remakes for Wii U, I don't want shell out 70 bucks for the Gamecube version of CVX =(

Now I'm pissed because he most likely won't have a chance to put this into practice.

I'm only expecting a crusty RE5Gold port. Maybe they'll release CVX on the Virtual Console.

To be fair, he'd been hinting at a release on "another platform" for quite a while.

Heya GAF, I've been thinking this through, and comparing the WiiU's reveal compared to the Wii, and I've come up with this:

This years E3 was much alike the first announcement of the Wii - if you remember, no games were shown during the Wii's first reveal, just people's reactions and a sneak peek at the system and stuff.
Later on, the controller was revealed, and a few more details.
The Wii U got a little more than this - game demos shown etc. - but much like the Wii, I believe the biggest dump of info will be at next years E3.
Many people thought it would be fully announced with games this year and released the next, but I think Nintendo are going to push release to the middle of next year, after E3.
This way they can show a ton of third party and first party games (which was notably lacking from this year's conference). In much the same way that the Wii changed design in that year gap, I think Nintendo will alter the WiiU somehow.
There's been a lot of attention and controversy over the controller and it's apparent single use per system. With enough feedback and commentary, I really wouldn't find it surprising if Nintendo re-thought there launch plan, and maybe altered the concept of the controller a little to enable multiple use of controllers on one system.
I know to many this may seem incredibly unlikely (with an arguably short amount of time left, nothing drastic will change), but I reckon release is further away than you think. Hell, some of Ninendo's own divisions have only just got dev kits.

All in all, I reckon this is the prototype phase for Nintendo.
The GPU may be tweaked, controller assessed and multiplayer capabilities finalised, all between now and launch.

I for one see a repeat of the Wii launch situation, and we're kinda at stage one at the moment.

nah, this same thing happened with Wii too, so many developers exited by the "possibilities", so few actual developments... *sigh*

With Wii U I could expect Capcom for example would give us a official stance about RE4, CVX HDmakes being released in the future for Wii U, or Namco with Soul Calibur V, etc...

I think the problem is that the word is used in such a general manner when it could mean something to different people. Like you said earlier when most gamers hear architecture they think the hardware, but (and this is why I said technically) that would fall under the term system architecture. Although blu didn't need that picture to back up his point because both he and wsippel weren't debating the term from different perspectives.

It really just comes down to clarifying your usage of the word. Thinking back I'm sure there was confusion when I talked about it and was referring to the system side and others may have been viewing it differently.

wsippel said:
Not just the instruction set. z196 and POWER7 share decimal floating point units, something Nintendo would have removed. On the other hand, z196 seems to lack SIMD units, a feature Nintendo would certainly want to keep. Nintendo also wouldn't need a RAID capable memory controller or L4 cache, which seem to be z196 specific features.

Cool. I did see this about the z196 and you can tell me if that means anything.
Analytics and high performance
– Compute or I/O intensive
– High memory bandwidth
– Floating point and vector processing (SIMD1)
– Scale out capable (horizontal scalability)

In the end this thing will more than likely be customized to the point where it wouldn't physically resemble what we know as a POWER7 and z196 since it seems to be about the process of implementing L3 eDRAM anyway. Though I still want to believe there is something to your find about the Z7, its mention on Syed Hyder's LinkedIn profile being one of his four products with the other three being the current consoles, and the overheating issues of the dev kits when looking at some of the available info of the Z7.

Kind of a side note, when they talked about the overheating I always wondered if it was something like this that was having trouble with the heat from the components.

Good! Hahah, it seems like the most logical process for Nintendo to take. I just can't see this being released pre E3 with pretty much no opportunity to showcase games otherwise. Imagine them releasing it without the hype build up that E3 creates. It just doesn't seem right.

Hm, honestly, don't think it's likely. I'd like it as soon as possible too, but I don't think it'll work like that. Anyway, early days...

*EDIT*

Thinking back to the Wii's games showcase - it was huge, with footage from various publishers, first and third party. I think this will happen again. Nintendo will show the final design, reveal the date and price, announce and show off their first party titles and talk about other important details.
People looking to see this console before June of next year are going to be disappointed, I think.
That said, if nintendo do go ahead and release this early next year (March/May) then it will be an underwhelming launch.

A couple month ago at E3 Nintendo probably had in mind to launch the Wii U before next E3, like they did with 3DS. The goal will be to launch the console off-season, build the userbase in order to have a very strong holiday season, without supply constrain like with the DS and Wii launch during the christmas period and with more games available.
Thta's what they did with the 3DS.

Now the problem is, we saw what it did with the 3DS. A slower launch, that cause doubt.
I think it's too late (alreayd with the E3 showing this year) for Nintendo to change their plan.
But sure they will bring a AAA Nintendo game this time instead of having SSIV.

I am in agreement as well about the e3 timing for info dump, although I believe it also has to do with not overshadowing the skyward sword and DQX releases.

Yeah, true, and I think it's just be wise for them to stick it out till early June, where they can have a proper go at it and showcase the past 2 years work from developers. Then it can be a good old fashioned launch, with a healthy line up of games. I'm not saying it'll be dead late (like Autumn), but late June/July would be more likely than the rumoured Spring launch. Releasing it any earlier would just be... odd.

Well if the reveal/s follow the Wii's, then there should be a major info drop at TGS this year. Which I'd be all for considering we have so few concrete details. But I agree that 90% of the "hype show" will start E3 2012.

And Devil's Third being a launch port would be completely awesome.

After everything we've been hearing lately, I'm expecting a late-August/early-September launch, at least in NA. It should be a great time to release the console for these reasons and more: It gives devs more than a year to work on games, plenty of time to optimize for the hardware, add Wii U control schemes, and upgrade assets when necessary. The Wii U hype will have had a shot in the arm during E3, with polished game demos showing people what makes it unique. It could make an appearance at post-E3 Summer music festivals and other events for lots of word-of-mouth exposure. Teens with summer jobs will have more cash on hand then at any other time. It would give parents plenty of time to get the console for the holidays. Launching while/before the NFL regular season begins is actually a big deal, even if gaffers may not necessarily care for sports titles.

People will buy Nintendo's new console if the right games are available.

The success of the Wii U will depend on its initial line-up and price, according to one of the leading technology experts at Square Enix.

After a confusing E3 reveal - and a problematic launch for the 3DS - you'd be forgiven for being a bit sceptical about Nintendo's Wii U. But Square Enix's worldwide technology director Julien Merceron believes that the machine will still find success if the launch line-up is strong enough.

Julien Merecon said:
"I'd say, don't write off the console," Merceron told VideoGamer.com. "For every console it's the same thing: one of the most important things is going to be the launch line-up. We see that every time there's a great title shipping on PSP, the PSP sales go up, and every time there's a great title shipping on 3DS, the 3DS sales go up.

Julien Merecon said:
"If the audience and players can see that there are products for them, there's definitely going to be wide adoption of Wii U. The things of utmost importance are going to be the pricing at launch, and the line-up."

Nintendo is no longer directly competing with Sony and Microsoft, says Merceron. But this doesn’t mean that the company or the Wii U should be written off.

"They're trying to do their own thing. Generally they don't seem to look for breadth, in terms of the things [features] they are supporting with their console. They seem to be focusing a lot, and trying to make sure the things they are focusing on are going to be at the top.

Julien Merecon said:
"I'd always be careful making judgements on their hardware. They have an approach to it that is very different from others, but they have a lot of inner control of what they are doing. And there's a lot of knowledge and skill behind it.

Not much of an update, just thought I'd post it. Oh yeah...no shit Square.

Yeah, I expect some more reveals and the like at Tokyo this year, and some at a few other gaming conferences and exhibits. As I said though, the big jackpot will be at E3 next year. Expect showreels galore, finalised designs and plenty of playable and finished games.

Oh, and just as a little side note, I wouldn't expect a new Zelda until about a year into the WiiU's life. Maybe there'll be a short demo at E3 again, like TP had, but nothing will be playable.

Agreed, but I don't expect them to even talk about a new Zelda next E3. My money would be on a full Pikmin booth, Mario demo, bunch of casual stuff, and maybe a new IP and lots of 3rd party demos.

I would kill for Zelda to look like Wind Waker again. Prettiest and most ageless title in that. And it looked far more like a Zelda game *should* look (all pre-OOT games and artwork) imo.
