There's very little chance that Nintendo will have software that captures the market like WiiSports did at the launch of the Wii U.

Conversely, there's a lot REAL competition in the console market, and with the PS3/360 being super cheap by the time the Wii U comes out, they'll have to make the system's value really high.PSFan said:The one thing that Wii U has the 3DS didn't is lack of competition from Apple since people tend to throw iOS devices in with other portable systems and not consoles and b/c of this I could see Nintendo pricing it a bit higher.

You're assuming that Nintendo knows this. Looking at 3DS, they have no clue.AceBandage said:Completely different scenario, though.

Also, with it looking more and more like Wii U will be a noticeable step-up from the current-gen, it seem highly unlikely that they'll price it the same as they priced the Wii, which wasn't a noticeable step and in fact lacked some of the shader capabilities of the XBox.

Judging from how much they believe Mario is all they need to save them, I disagree. They have zero new IPs on the way 3DS, and the one new IP they released was a $40 retail game that had about as much content as a $1 iOS game. I've seen nothing that indicates that they're even considering making any new IPs in the near future.AceBandage said:No, I'd say they know this VERY well, right now.

Yes, but that's beside the point. Gamers want new IPs, and they should know this. The fact that they haven't even teased any means that they probably don't have any planned. I'm really worried that E3 2012's Wii U line-up will be nothing but sequels.AceBandage said:Uh, considering how much Mario and Mario Kart sells... They are certainly right.

DefectiveReject said:What if every WiiU had everything on show at E3 from Nintendo built in and fleshed out some (aside Mario)?
Catch Mii as a multiple player demo.
The pirate game.
WiiSportsHD
That Zelda level fleshed out some as a dungeon, as a graphical showcase.
The browser.
Some media functions
Video calling
Social networking applications
Would that be aggressive??
Nintendo could use more new high quality new stuff yes but I do consider Kid Icarus a new IP, the game is nothing like the NES title.BurntPork said:They have zero new IPs on the way 3DS
Indeed but why give people something that will sell 1m copies at best when you can use the same effort and get 15m+ sales.[Nintex] said:Nintendo could use more new high quality new stuff yes but I do consider Kid Icarus a new IP, the game is nothing like the NES title.
Zoramon089 said:You say that and yet the top selling games are GTA, CoD, Mario, Pokemon, etc. The only new IP to sell super well this gen is Assassin's Creed and...*shudders* Just Dance...
Systems launches are a great way to introduce new IP's. Titles like Assassins Creed, Gears of War that were released within a year of the Xbox 360 launch and became quite popular on the Wii side the same could be said about for example No More Heroes and the Wii __ line of games. A rule of thumb for system launches really, release your new IP's early and expand them during the course of the generation.DefectiveReject said:Indeed but why give people something that will sell 1m copies at best when you can use the same effort and get 15m+ sales.
If people bought New IPs more would get created

That has more to do with the game than the fact that it is a new IP I think. I've played and it's quite cool I just don't get why didn't pick Star Fox instead of Fox instead. It would've been a perfect way to bring Star Fox back.Shiggy said:Few are interested in the new Kid Icarus game, even GAF doesn't show too much enthusiasm. NoE is also not very confident in that title.
and look at how many of those IPs started out in this generation. Almost every successful system has at least one new IP to help define it. What does 3DS have? An eShop game that won't be advertised much, even on the eShop itself, and a pseudo-new IP (Kid Icarus) that has been getting mixed impressions afaik. Both 3DS and Wii U need at least one IP to take full advantage of the system and offer an experience that you won't find on other systems. New IPs are what made the NES, Game Boy, PS1, PS2, DS, and Wii the huge successes they are. They're why the PS3 managed to come so close to the 360 in worldwide sales despite coming out a year late. (Okay, part of that is due to the 360 flopping in Japan.)AceBandage said:Gamers want new IPs...
And that's why pretty much every game coming out this year is a sequel...
BurntPork said:Nintendo has made no indication that they plan on creating a new IP for 3DS to be positioned as a system seller. Not one. I hope that they have something planned.

Shiggy said:They actually haven't released anything that was not a quick rehash (nintendogs, Pilotwings), a slightly enhanced tech demo that should've been released on eShop (Steel Diver), or a remake...it doesn't look like they'll be providing much original content in future either.
AceBandage said:Most of what they've released or shown so far has been handled by outside studios.
We have no idea what internal teams are currently working on.

Zoramon089 said:Yup, let's completely ignore over 20+ years of consoles and handhelds with original Nintendo titles just because 1 handheld is showered with tons of new titles a couple months after release...

I know, but you would think that they would at least hint at something by now. It's looking like nothing will show up until the second half of 2012 at the earliest, and even that's doubtful.DaSorcerer7 said:Every nintendo platform ever released has had new IPs, so your fear or frustration is pretty much unfounded.
Resistance was a PS3 launch title I think? Or are we only talking Wii?ShockingAlberto said:I am trying to think of launch IPs this generation that have lasted.
Wii line is all I can think of.
I can think of NSMB Wii and DKCR, unless they missed the holiday for Europe.Shiggy said:Yes? I don't remember any game over here in Europe which was announced after E3 and then saw a release before the next E3.
Nintendo rarely spends as much on new IP's as they do on Mario and Zelda. The last 2 new in-house IP's that got the premium AAA+ treatment were Star Fox on the SNES and Pikmin on the GameCube. Eternal Darkness, Wario Ware, Banjo Kazooie etc. all lower key titles. Some managed to sell on par with Nintendo's best but they never got the full marketing machine behind them.ShockingAlberto said:They'll likely publish a number of new IPs like they do every generation, but
A) That's not what people want when they mean "new IPs," they specifically want things made by Nintendo developers or Nintendo-owned developers
B) lol NOA
When was the last time Nintendo dropped a hint about stuff in development without a proper announcement?BurntPork said:I know, but you would think that they would at least hint at something by now. I just wanted to say that, also Advance Wars Days of Ruin was one of those Nintendo games announced like months before release.Sadist said:Punch-Out!!
Never released in europe and that announcement was just plain weird if I hadn't leaked those screenshots no one would've known what the game looked like before release.AceBandage said:Excitebots as well.
BurntPork said:Oh, by the way, is it really tru that Nintendo isn't allowing devs to put free demos on the eShop? Because if it is and they don't change that, they really are clueless and stuck in the past. I'm guessing it's because Nintendo has taken the horrible practice of expiring content and has no plans to enter the 21st century in that area.

For some reason I read "after" as "at".Shiggy said:Both were announced at E3, so no. But well, Punch-Out was announced after E3 and released shortly before the next one. But that's a rare exception. Excitebots does also count, but that was only because nobody wanted to spend too much money on it or give it too much attention.
I won't doubt that MK7 and Mario Land 3D will be good games, but they are nothing really new. And my point still stands, it doesn't look like new IPs are coming out until at least E3 2012.
Edit: Beaten with Punch-Out
I just hope that they let third-parties in that that you get to keep them when you download them. :/AceBandage said:Demos are coming sometime this year.
Reggie confirmed that at E3.
For some reason, they don't have it set up yet.
Someone around here said it in response to a $2 demo being put on the eShop.ShockingAlberto said:Who said this
