Wii U Speculation Thread of Brains Beware: Wii U Re-Unveiling At E3 2012

On 3DS Nintendo said: "Pricing that fits with the DS line-up" and that ended up being $249 for the 3DS. Now if Nintendo talks about things being expensive... I imagine this is going to cost at least $399. Iwata said he also wasn't sure if Nintendo was going to take a hit on hardware with Wii U which kinda indicates that it won't be cheap. They'll probably pack-in enough stuff to justify the price like both a Wii U Tablet and a Wii Remote along with a sensor bar, some pre-installed software and perhaps a game like HD Wii Sports. Nintendo probably sees the Wii Remote as a $40 stand-alone product with the Wii U tablet being a $79 product. Add in a set of HDMI-cables for HDTV's, some kind of dock for the Wii U Pad and all the fancy streaming tech and I honestly can't see Nintendo selling it for $299 let alone $249 and the difference between $349 and $399 is probably easier to close with some pack-in game instead of cutting production costs.

This console looks fucking stupid and I WILL NOT PURCHASE IT

Surely some one helped you with this. Such a detailed, concise and well thought out argument. Which raises both the pros and cons, and eloquently details all one needs to know. Truly an amazing post. Please kind sir, give us MORE.

399.99 feels steep. I think 349.99 is the sweet spot, especially if they plan to take a loss.

It's been said already, but it comes down to the games. If they have a really killer, stand-out piece of software they could sell it for 399.99 easily and keep it there for the year.

Anyone remember when Nintendo said that Wii will cost less than $250 and then it ended up being $249.99? Good times...
It launched in Japan at the equivalent of $200 US. It just didn't have Wii Sports included.

Including it in the US/elsewhere was a genius move, though

Nintendo should just copy Sony's strategy when pricing things.

They should release comments that it's going to be expensive, some rumors saying $499 or something like that, and then announcing the price of $399 so everyone is happy.

Worked for Sony for the VITA and it's shitty memory cards, now everyone is really happy to spend $99 on 32 GB of flash...

Hopefully it means that Wii U will have a competent hardware, but I guessing that great part of the cost will be related to the controller and covering R&D.

Reggie continuing to make me believe they will sell at $349 for a loss.

I guess that's true, but I think it's best to temper expectations.

Has Nintendo ever used a cutting-edge GPU architecture? Serious question.

Couldn't it be argued that Flipper fits the bill since it supposedly had some level of influence on future ATI gpus?

R&D doesn't have any effect on the price, it's a sunk cost. The controller undoubtedly will, though, which is why I'd expect this to be more expensive than Nintendo's previous consoles, but not enormously (they'll be cautious after the 3DS).

I also doubt that there's going to be a Wiimote it the box. I'd love it if they did, as it would mean much more support for it in Wii U games, but they're going to try to keep the cost of the console down, and there are a lot of Wiimotes already out there.

A pack in game is a high possibility, both on the basis of it having worked so well last time around, and as a cheap way to add value to the console itself.

In fact, crazy pack-in game idea: New Super Mario Bros Wii U, where you have 4 players playing as normal with Wiimotes, and the fifth player with the Wii U pad controlling all the enemies. Would sell around a billion copies, by my estimate.

Both the N64 and Gamecube could be argued to have had "cutting edge" GPUs, although the term is vague. The Wii is Nintendo's only 3D console that can't be said to have "cutting edge" internal hardware in any respect.

Going by Reggie comments it seems like Wii U will not launch at mass market price right off at launch, they could eventually keep a high price is enthusiast gamers are interested, if not I see Nintendo lowering the price more quicky than expected (ala 3DS). Anyway Wii U could easily reach a mass market price within the second year or so.

Yeah the term is definitely pretty open to interpretation.

Also we haven't talked about Final Fantasy XV possibly coming to Wii U.

http://www.ubergizmo.com/2011/12/rumor-square-enix-to-announce-final-fantasy-xv-at-e3-2012/

This piece of rumor was discovered in the rumor section (rather appropriate we feel) of the latest issue of GamesMaster UK. The rumor stated that the game would be announced at a special Square Enix E3 2012 press conference and that the game would be seeing a launch across multiple platforms. This includes the PC, Nintendo’s Wii U, Sony’s PlayStation 3 and Microsoft’s Xbox 360.

Seeing Final Fantasy on the Wii U is not really a huge stretch as Square Enix’s producer, Yoshinori Kitase, did express interest in developing the game for Nintendo’s upcoming gaming platform.

Yeah, it doens't make sense to keep it Ps3 exclusive, specially if Wii U online is as open as they say it is... 360? Did MS opened up their online a bit or SE got humbled after the epic flop?

Edit: FFXV? I was thinking about FFXIV...

LOL. I was just about to say you must be thinking of XIV.

Fabula Nova Crystallis isn't even finished yet and XIV is being repaired.

I don't care for rumors on games that are 4 years away at LEAST. yawn

If it's not included, we can declare it dead. Chances are that only 4-5 games will support it in Wii U's lifetime.

Couldn't it be argued that Flipper fits the bill since it supposedly had some level of influence on future ATI gpus?

Sorta, but it was totally outclassed by the XBox's GPU.

Nintendo games will support it for multiplayer and some 3rd party games will support it as an optional control scheme (hopefully FPSs). But we wouldn't get any HD games designed for it, which would be a shame.

After what happened to Motion+, I refuse to believe that Nintendo will support a non-standard peripheral well.

I'd say it'll be more like the Classic Controller, where a reasonable number of games support it, but largely as an afterthought. Nintendo will have to support it for multiplayer, though, as the console will only support at best 2 (and quite possibly just one) Wii U pad.

Kind of already happened with those place-holders.

Well if Nintendo's GPU was such an ordinary chip, why did they get sued twice over it?

Lonestar Inventions vs Nintendo
Shared Memory Graphics vs Nintendo

I can almost guarantee the WiiU will include a WiiMote+. The demo showed a golf game that used the WiiMote and the WiiUpad together, so Nintendo is definitely considering keeping the WiiMote mandatory.

Nunchuck might be phazed out, though.

Sorta, but it was totally outclassed by the XBox's GPU.

Saying totally is subjective and had nothing to do with your original question.

Honestly a mainline FF hitting the WiiU always seemed like an obvious move to me. It's already multiplat now, and the 360 is useless in japan, so there's no reason not to get the next one on Nintendo hardware.

FF XVI Wii U exclusive confirmed. :P

Ordinary? We were talking about it being advanced for its time. And lawsuits have no bearing on that.

I like how you doubt that the console will include a Wii remote yet you imagine a pack in game that its multi player centric.

Nintendo is pushing the asymmetrical multiplayer as an important feature of the machine. Also multiplayer will depend more on extra wii remotes than extra tablets, due to costs and inconvenience for the user of moving then around or technical ones for the developer in supporting multiple tablets (im not talking in absolutes btw)

I could see the Nunchuck not included in the package (just to ensure that their consumers need to buy at least some extra periphal out of the box), but no way will they phase it out when it is required for certain kinds of multiplayer games when playing with more people than the number of Wiipads able to connect to the Wii U.
I don't see it, if Nintendo goes to the extent of including the Wiremote it would be a fully functional one, hence the Nunchuck is needed.

Nintendo is no stranger to such proceedings, they did that with the N64 release in America.
NewSuperMario Bros .Mii as the main launch title.
You know i see Pikmin as a launch title or launch window just because the concept fits really well the controller.

What type of functionality for the new controller would you like to see for New Mario Brothers WiiU Kyzer?

My prediction for launch.

Wii U with Wiimote + Nunchuk and some Wii Sports like game for 350.

NewSuperMario Bros .Mii as the main launch title.

I want to pay for a powerfull Nintendo console, not a bunch of controllers and peripherals, I have plenty of Wiimotes +, nunchuks, and CCs

Wii U high price should to be associated to the hardware itself not the Wiimote+, nunchuk package =/

I think it's pretty likely that a pack-in game will come with the console, but I don't think it will be anything like Wii Sports. That ship has sailed, and the market is flooded with games that showcase motion controls to casual audiences. Besides, a collection of sports minigames won't be nearly as effective on a tablet-style controller.

My prediction for launch:

--Wii U console

--Redesigned wiimote (same tech, motion+ integrated, slimmer build with cheaper, lighter plastic. Nintendo will try to make this thing as cheap to produce as possible).

--1 Wii Tablet

--A Nintendo Suite portal pre-installed onto the console. Comes with a web browser and basic apps (paint, email, Angry Birds, etc), handful of mini-games designed to show off the tablet and system (at least one will be primed for online play specifically), and a portal for playable demos coming soon from 3rd parties. Nintendo will push this as the "Wii Sports" for the console.

--$399

All of my hate if that happens.

The Wii had a pack in game that was multiplayer-centric, yet it only came with one controller.

Don't get me wrong, I'd really like to see them include one in the box, I even think they had planned to have one in the box, I just think that when they're sitting down and deciding how to keep the cost of the console down, the Wiimote's going to be the easiest thing to get rid of.

In fact even if they don't include a Wiimote in the box, I can see them packing in a game which uses them for multiplayer, to encourage as many people as possible to buy them/use the ones they have for the Wii.

I don't agree with the Wii sports example. Wii sports was more than anything else Motion centric, of the multi games some even were of the take turns nature. Wii sports was charged in the console price also, 250 vs 200 in Japan.

However, your argument in regards to cut costs is a reasonable one, i most admit I still think that to properly demonstrate the tablet functionality the Wii remote needs to be there day one, as well, as software packed with the console that shows the asymmetrical type of multiplayer. Like some Pacman Vs levels for example, software that is already made available and wouldn't cost Nintendo a single penny to include. The Wii remote is cheap to make these days in comparison to the Wii launch and has dropped in price even.

I predict Metroid Prime Hunters 2 as a launch title. That's plausible right? The 1st MPH wasn't made by Retro but NST. Their last game was in 2010 so 2 years to make something for Wii U sounds about right.
